Saint-Gilles-les-Bains is Reunion Island's number-one beach resort, and it has all the superlatives: the island's largest protected lagoon (8km from Pointe des Aigrettes to La Saline), the busiest marina (350 berths, departure point for every whale-watching outing), the densest concentration of 4-5 star hotels (Lux*, Akoya, Le Saint Alexis).

In a single day you can dive in the morning, have lunch with your feet in the sand, drive up to the Maïdo in the afternoon and end at sunset on the lagoon's edge. Saint-Gilles is also the handiest base for day trips to Cilaos (1h15), Mafate (a 1h 4x4 taxi ride), the volcano (2h) and the wild south.

Here's the complete guide, in the order you'd plan a stay: beaches, the harbour and water activities, the lagoon, family activities, the Maïdo Hauts, restaurants, hotels, excursions.

3 beaches

The Saint-Gilles lagoon, beach by beach

L'Hermitage, Roches Noires and La Saline: 3 beaches with 3 different vibes along 8km of sheltered lagoon. Boucan-Canot, 4km north and outside the lagoon, has its own guide.

L'Hermitage Beach

The must-see
4km south of the centre, access via Rue Charles Gounod and Bd Leconte de Lisle

The jewel of Reunion Island's lagoon: 1.5km of golden sand protected by the coral reef, with calm turquoise water at 25-27°C, 1-3m deep. Ideal for family swimming and for snorkelling in the shade of century-old filao (casuarina) trees (butterflyfish, sea urchins, sometimes young turtles). A coastal footpath leads to La Saline.

Roches Noires Beach

Town centre, opposite Boulevard Roland Garros

The town beach, with golden sand and direct access from the seafront hotels. The waves are bigger than at L'Hermitage (there's no reef offshore), and it's Saint-Gilles's original surf spot, with a surf school on the beach. Busier and livelier than L'Hermitage, with bars and restaurants along the sand.

La Saline-les-Bains and Trou d'Eau Beach

Calm
7-8km south, past L'Hermitage

The widest, calmest beach on the lagoon. Trou d'Eau, its northern end, is the best camping spot in the west (filao trees, a deeper lagoon, fine sand). The wilder western part of La Saline is also good for snorkelling. 5-star hotels (Lux*, Akoya) line the area.

Parking

Free parking at Trou d'Eau (arrive early on weekends)

4km to the north:Boucan-Canot, golden sand, choppier waves and a natural tidal pool. It's outside the lagoon, so swimming is protected by shark nets.

Frequently asked questions

Saint-Gilles-les-Bains: your questions answered

What is there to do in Saint-Gilles-les-Bains?
Saint-Gilles is where most of Reunion Island's water activities happen: whale watching (whales from June to October, dolphins year-round), scuba diving, catamaran cruises, Hawaiian outrigger canoeing, windsurfing and wingfoil, big-game fishing. On the lagoon: swimming at L'Hermitage, snorkelling under the filao trees and paddleboarding at La Saline. On land: the Aquarium, Jardin d'Eden, Oasis Lagoon for families and the Wednesday street market. It's also the perfect base for trips to the Maïdo, Mafate and Cilaos.
What are the best beaches in Saint-Gilles?
L'Hermitage beach for family swimming and snorkelling (a protected lagoon, 25-27°C, golden sand). Roches Noires beach in the town centre, livelier and good for surfing. Trou d'Eau and La Saline for peace and a wider lagoon. Boucan-Canot (4km north) for golden sand and waves outside the lagoon, with shark nets.
Is there an aquarium in Saint-Gilles?
Yes, the Reunion Island Aquarium is right in the marina, with 500+ reef fish in around twenty themed tanks and an interactive trail on the Marine Reserve (allow about 1.5h). Prices are about €12 for adults and €7-9 for children. Open 7 days a week, apart from maintenance closures. Ideal on a rainy day or a cool morning.
What is there to do in Saint-Gilles with children?
Saint-Gilles Aquarium (age 4+), Oasis Lagoon (a floating water park, age 6+), Jardin d'Eden (a botanical treasure hunt), swimming and snorkelling at L'Hermitage, Hawaiian outrigger canoeing (age 8+), towed inflatable rides (age 12+), horse riding at the Maïdo and the Wednesday morning street market. If it rains, try the Aquarium or the Stella Matutina museum (15 min south).
When is the Saint-Gilles street market held?
Every Wednesday morning, from about 6am to 1pm, in the town centre, with local produce (Victoria pineapples, Cilaos lentils, fruit, vegetables, spices, Bourbon vanilla), Creole crafts, bouchons (Chinese-style dumplings) and snacks. It's smaller than the Saint-Paul market (Friday-Saturday) but authentic and easy to get to.
Where can you dive in Saint-Gilles?
The main sites reachable from the harbour: Passe de l'Ermitage (25m max, all levels), Passe des Trois Bassins (22m, beginners), Cap La Houssaye (a 17m shore dive, all levels), Tour de Boucan (22m, Level 1/Open Water and above), and the Haï Siang wreck (54m, experienced Level 3 divers). The Marine Reserve is home to 1,200+ fish species. See my complete guide to diving in Reunion Island.
What animals can you see in Saint-Gilles?
In the lagoon: butterflyfish, damselfish, triggerfish, parrotfish and sometimes young green turtles. How do you get up to the Maïdo from Saint-Gilles?

Where can you stay in Saint-Gilles-les-Bains?
There's everything: 5-star (Lux* Saint-Gilles right on L'Hermitage lagoon, Akoya in La Saline), 4-star (Le Saint Alexis in Boucan, Iloha in Saint-Leu, Boucan Canot Hôtel), aparthotels, guesthouses and Airbnb rentals. Expect about €80 for a simple room, €150-280 for a boutique hotel and €280-550 for a luxury resort. See my guide to upmarket hotels.
Saint-Gilles or Saint-Pierre: where should you stay?
Choose Saint-Gilles (west) for the long lagoon (L'Hermitage, La Saline), a lively beach-resort feel, upmarket hotels and easy access to the Maïdo. Choose Saint-Pierre (south) for a more authentic Creole feel, a student vibe, easy access to the volcano and the wild south, and often lower prices. Many itineraries combine both (they're an hour's drive apart).
How do you get to Saint-Gilles from the airport?
Roland Garros airport (Saint-Denis) is 40km away, 50 min via the N1 and Route des Tamarins. Pierrefonds airport (Saint-Pierre) is 60km away, 1h. Take an airport shuttle (about €25-35 depending on group size), a taxi (about €80-100), a hire car, or the Car Jaune bus line 81 (airport to Saint-Gilles).
How do you get around Saint-Gilles without a car?
The town centre and the harbour are walkable. Between L'Hermitage and La Saline there's a 3km coastal footpath, bike share, local shuttles in season and taxi apps. To go further afield (the Maïdo, Cilaos, the volcano), you'll need a hire car. The Car Jaune bus serves the west, but not very often.
