This is the only big game fishing trip from Saint-Gilles where you can book a single seat online, with 60 verified reviews and a 4.7 out of 5 rating that has held steady for several seasons. The boat is a 32-foot LEGEND operated by skippers Joël and Bertrand, two professional fishermen who know the fishing grounds several miles off the west coast. The meeting point is the harbour area of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, 10 minutes from Saint-Paul on the N1A.
The trip lasts 5 to 6 hours, usually from 6am to midday, to make the most of the morning when the sea is flat and the game fish are most active near the surface. The boat takes up to 10 people; with 5-6 actual anglers, everyone gets a turn on the rod when a big fish strikes. The crew sets the lines (trolling with lures, live bait when the opportunity arises, jigging more rarely), teaches the techniques as you go, and helps with the fight once a fish is hooked.
Target species off Reunion Island's west coast: yellowfin tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi, barracuda, bonito, sailfish; and from January to March, blue and black marlin season (no guarantee, but that's when the odds are best). One important rule to know in advance: on shared trips the catch belongs to the crew, as is the local custom. If you want to keep your catch, you need to charter privately (see private charter prices below).
Funbooker price: €130 per person for an angler's seat on the shared half-day. Free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure. Bring 100% mineral sunscreen (chemical filters are banned in the marine reserve), a cap or hat, polarised sunglasses, closed shoes with grippy soles rather than flip-flops, and a windbreaker for the fast ride back. Use a seasickness patch the night before if you're prone to it: 5-6 hours in the west coast swell can take its toll, even on a well-equipped boat.
