4.94★average rating16combined reviews3packages€35from

You can see the whole west coast from the Maïdo viewpoint, but out on a catamaran it looks completely different. The Saint-Gilles lagoon seen from the sea, the coral reef you skim just metres away, the light shifting at 6pm over Cap La Houssaye: three things you never see from the coastal road.

Three trips bookable through Manawa, aboard the Maloya departing from Le Port: a sunset sail, whale and dolphin watching, and a night cruise with an astronomy guide. 2026 prices checked on the update date, genuine traveller reviews, and tips for choosing the right trip for your budget.

The best-rated sunset cruise on the west coast, with 5 out of 5 from 13 Manawa reviews, and at €35 the cheapest. It leaves from Le Port (Titan marina), a 15-minute drive from Saint-Gilles on the Route des Tamarins, so allow for that if you're staying by the beaches. The operator is FestiYacht de Bourbon, which runs the Maloya, a spacious catamaran designed to carry a large number of passengers while keeping room on the front deck.

The trip lasts 2.5 hours, 2 of them at sea. Check-in is 30 minutes before boarding, with free parking on site. After the safety briefing, the boat leaves an hour before sunset and heads towards Cap La Houssaye or La Grande Chaloupe, depending on conditions. You sail back after dark as the harbour lights come on, one of the best moments of the trip.

On board, the crew serves a welcome drink (a home-made local cocktail, alcohol-free on request) and 2 canapés such as savoury pastries or samoussas. It's lighter than on the longer cruises, but this trip isn't about the food: it's the light of the sunset over the west coast, the shift from deep blue to orange, and being out at sea rather than at a land-based viewpoint like Cap La Houssaye.

Who it's for: couples wanting a relaxed end to the day, families with children (no minimum age, free for babies under 1, under-18s must be with an adult), and groups of friends taking sundowners out to sea. Flexible cancellation policy with a free reschedule or refund for bad weather. Bring a windbreaker: the temperature drops fast once the sun is down, even in the warm season.

Same boat (the Maloya, run by FestiYacht de Bourbon from Le Port) as the sunset trip, but this time the focus is on learning about whales and dolphins. The boat carries a hydrophone that picks up humpback whale song and dolphin whistles, played through the onboard sound system. The marine guide explains what you're hearing and seeing in French and English, with printed information sheets on board.

On the west coast of Reunion Island, you'll find 4 dolphin species year-round: the spinner dolphin (the most common, in large pods), the bottlenose dolphin, the Indo-Pacific dolphin and, more rarely, the pantropical spotted dolphin. From July to October, humpback whales come up from the south to calve and nurse in the warm waters; the hydrophone picks them up before you even see them at the surface, which makes the encounter all the more special.

A catamaran is a different experience from the faster RIBs used elsewhere on the island: you cover less ground in 2.5 hours, but once you're there you're more stable, you can watch from inside the cabin or on the front deck just above the waterline, and the gentler engine is easier on the animals. The Reuni'Mer whale-watching code is respected (slow approach, minimum distance of 100 m, backing off if an animal shows signs of stress).

Manawa price €37, among the cheapest whale-watching trips on the west coast. Included: educational commentary, printed materials, and depending on the slot, either pastries and fruit juice in the morning or a welcome drink and canapés in the afternoon. Flexible cancellation with a full refund for bad weather. Worth booking if you want a proper whale and dolphin trip without the bumpier ride of a RIB; otherwise, see the dedicated whale-watching page for Saint-Gilles.

Astronomy guide · Southern hemisphere sky

From
€45/pers.

The most unusual of the three: 2.5 hours at sea after dark, with an astronomy guide on board who points out the constellations and tells the myths behind them. Departure is from Le Port (Titan marina, FestiYacht de Bourbon), boarding 30 minutes before the slot. The trip is scheduled in the late evening depending on the season, generally between 7pm and 9pm, to get proper darkness offshore.

The beauty of going to sea at night is that a kilometre offshore, the light pollution from Saint-Denis and Le Port almost disappears. Reunion Island has a southern hemisphere sky, with constellations you can't see from Europe or North America: the Southern Cross, Sagittarius at its highest, the southern Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds on some moonless nights. The guide picks them out with a laser pointer and teaches you the basics so you can carry on stargazing with the naked eye afterwards.

The boat is the Maloya, the same catamaran as for the sunset and whale-watching trips, so the comfort is the same: a front deck to lie on, a cabin to warm up in, and a sound system for the commentary. A welcome drink (local cocktail, alcohol-free on request) is served at the start. There's no meal, so eat beforehand or bring a light snack.

Who it's for: couples, astronomy lovers, and children from age 7-8 with an adult (the trip is calm, but they need to stay quiet at sea for long stretches). Who it's not for: anyone prone to seasickness (the swell feels stronger at night) or looking for a party. Manawa price €45, flexible cancellation. No reviews yet, as it's a new trip from FestiYacht de Bourbon.

Sunset

Sunset by catamaran in Reunion Island

On the west coast, sunset falls between 5:30pm (southern winter) and 7pm (southern summer), and the 30 minutes before it are worth a boat trip on their own. The sky shifts from deep blue to orange within minutes, clouds pile up above Maïdo in the background, and the sailboat's silhouette makes the perfect foreground for photos.

There's one sunset cruise you can book by the seat at a reasonable price: the Maloya trip at €35 via Manawa, from Le Port. It lasts 2.5 hours (30 min check-in plus 2 hours at sea), with a welcome cocktail and canapés on board. Other sunset options on the west coast are private charters (Lady la Fée, Grand Bleu: ask for a quote), run by independent operators in Saint-Gilles-les-Bains.

For the Maloya slot, allow 15 minutes' drive from Saint-Gilles via the Route des Tamarins, free parking at Titan marina, and a windbreaker in your bag: the temperature drops fast after dark, even in the height of the southern summer.

Good to know

What to know before booking

Where do the cruises depart from?

All 3 packages on this page depart from Le Port (Titan marina), 15 minutes by car from Saint-Gilles-les-Bainsvia the Route des Tamarins. If you're staying in Saint-Gilles, factor that drive into your plans (and add 30 minutes to be safe before check-in). Independent catamaran operators (Cat'Ananas, Cat'Alizé, Lady la Fée, Grand Bleu) also sail from Saint-Gilles itself; book directly with them.

The season and the sea

Dry season (May to November): calmer seas, steady breezes, ideal sailing conditions. Whale season runs from July to October, when catamaran whale-watching really comes into its own. Rainy season (December to April): trips are sometimes postponed because of strong wind or swell, the sea is warmer for swimming, and the dolphins are there all year anyway.

Seasickness

  • A catamaran is the most stable boat, and the swell on the west coast is usually moderate.
  • Put on a seasickness patch 12 hours before boarding if you're very prone to it.
  • Eat light beforehand. Stay out on deck in the open air, keep your eyes on the horizon rather than your feet.
  • The night trip is harder for those prone to seasickness (the swell feels stronger).

Cancellation and weather

Manawa (Maloya): flexible cancellation, free reschedule or refund for bad weather. The crew decides the evening before or the morning of, depending on the weather window, and favours rescheduling to another slot over a refund when the calendar allows.

What to bring

100% mineral sunscreen (chemical filters are banned in the marine reserve), a hat, polarised sunglasses, a windbreaker (essential on the sunset and night trips), swimwear and a towel if there's a swim stop, and your own water. Flat shoes with grippy soles rather than flip-flops on deck.

Frequently asked questions

Catamaran cruises in Reunion Island: your questions answered

How much is a catamaran cruise in Reunion Island in 2026?
Expect €35 for the 2.5-hour sunset trip on the Maloya from Le Port (5/5 from 13 Manawa reviews), €37 for the catamaran whale and dolphin watching trip with a hydrophone, and €45 for the stargazing night cruise with an astronomy guide.
Where do catamarans depart from in Reunion Island?
Le Port (Titan marina) is the departure point for the 3 packages on the Maloya (sunset, whale watching, night cruise) operated by FestiYacht de Bourbon via Manawa, a 15-minute drive from Saint-Gilles-les-Bains via the Route des Tamarins. Several independent operators (Cat'Ananas, Cat'Alizé, Lady la Fée, Grand Bleu) also sail from Saint-Gilles harbour; book directly with them.
Which trip is best for seeing dolphins?
For wildlife, go for the €37 whale and dolphin trip (hydrophone on board, commentary from a marine guide). The €35 sunset trip also often meets spinner and bottlenose dolphins along the way, even though that's not its focus.
When can I see humpback whales from a catamaran?
From July to October, the migration period when humpback whales come up from Antarctica to calve and nurse their young in Reunion Island's warm waters. The €37 whale-watching trip is designed for this period; outside it, you'll mostly see dolphins.
Is a catamaran OK if I get seasick?
Yes, more so than a RIB or a monohull. With two hulls, a catamaran is far more stable in the same swell, and the coral reef keeps the west coast swell down up to about 1 km from shore. If you're very prone to it, take aspirin or a seasickness patch the evening before, eat light before boarding, and stay out on deck in the open air rather than in the cabin.
Is there a minimum age for catamaran cruises?
There is no minimum age on the 3 trips listed. Babies under 1 go free, and under-18s must be with an adult. For the stargazing cruise, age 7-8 and up is more realistic, since children need to stay calm at sea for 2 hours.
What happens in bad weather?
Manawa offers a free reschedule or refund if the crew cancels for weather conditions. Cancellations are decided the evening before or the morning of, depending on the weather window, and the crew favours rescheduling to another slot over a refund when the calendar allows.
What should I bring?
100% mineral sunscreen (chemical filters are banned in Reunion Island's marine reserve), a hat or cap, polarised sunglasses, a windbreaker for the return trip or the sunset/night trips (the temperature drops fast after sunset), swimwear and a towel for a swim stop at sea, your own water. Closed shoes rather than flip-flops on deck when the sea is choppy.
How far ahead should I book?
Outside peak season (May-June, September-November outside school holidays), 3 to 5 days is enough. In high season (July-August, the French school holidays, Christmas and New Year), allow 1 to 3 weeks, especially for the sunset slot, which fills up fastest. The morning slot tends to stay more available, and the sea is generally calmer then.
Can I charter a private catamaran in Reunion Island?
Yes, several local companies offer private charters for groups, birthdays, hen/stag dos or corporate events. This page lists trips sold by the seat; for a private charter, contact Cat'Ananas, Cat'Alizé, Lady la Fée, Grand Bleu or FestiYacht de Bourbon through their own websites. Whole-boat rates generally start at around €800-1,500 for a half-day, depending on the boat and season.
