In the Saint-Paul highlands, halfway between the west coast and the Maïdo cliffs, the forest trails and cane-field tracks offer some of the most accessible quad-biking terrain on the island. No riding experience needed: the instructor supervises, the quad handles any terrain, and an hour is enough to see the landscape the way the local kids do, from 600m up.

4 bookable packages through affiliate partners Manawa and Funbooker, across the 2 go-to companies at Maïdo: Les Quads de la Plaine St Paul (guide Thierry, 5/5 from 120 reviews) and Adventure Quad Réunion(departing Villèle, 2-seat buggy option). Below you'll find 2026 prices checked on the update date, genuine Manawa reviews, and tips for choosing between a 1-hour taster and the full day with a farm lunch at 1,400m.

This is the most reviewed quad ride on the whole island, with a 5 out of 5 rating from 120 verified Manawa reviews and a guide (Thierry, the most mentioned name in the feedback) who comes up regularly in positive comments. The meeting point is La Plaine, Saint-Paul, in the west coast highlands, with the exact location given after booking. Allow 2 hours on site for 1 hour of actual riding: briefing, getting to grips with the quad, the ride, and the return to base.

The quad used is a CF-MOTO OVERLAND 4x4 625cc, a comfortable machine that handles the Hauts trails with ease. The ride sets off from La Plaine, Saint-Paul, and climbs the forest trails halfway up the Maïdo cliffs, with panoramic stops over the Saint-Gilles lagoon, the coral reef and, on clear days, the horizon towards Madagascar. The guide supervises throughout, slows down for technical sections, and supports beginners.

Who it's for: travellers who want the quad experience in the west coast highlands without a long commitment (2 hours in total, compatible with a half-day spent elsewhere), families with kids from age 6 as a passenger (18 minimum to drive, with a valid licence), and couples sharing a quad (1 driver + 1 passenger, priced per vehicle).

Manawa price: €110 per quad for the 1-hour package. If you want to go further, the same listing offers 2 hours at €165, 3 hours at €220, and the 4-hour half-day with restaurant lunch at €400. Flexible cancellation with rescheduling or a free refund in case of bad weather. Bring 100% mineral sunscreen, a cap, sunglasses and closed shoes; long sleeves and trousers are best (the track is dusty).

This is the longest package from Les Quads de la Plaine's listing, designed for those who really want to make the most of the west Hauts trails rather than heading back mid-morning. 4 hours of actual riding, 7 hours on site in total with the briefing, the restaurant lunch break and the return. Lunch is included in the price (usually a buffet or à la carte depending on the day's partner restaurant, drinks included).

The route climbs higher up the cliffs, reaching viewpoints you can't get to in 1 or 2 hours, and links together several forest trails. The guide adapts the pace to the group, alternating between technical sections that require careful riding and smoother stretches where you can take in the scenery. The lunch break happens midway through, breaking up the physical fatigue and letting you set off again with fresh energy.

Who it's for: travellers who want a genuine half-day of quad biking (not just an introduction), groups of friends looking for more of an event than an activity, and couples extending the experience to make the most of it. Who it's not for: very young kids (8 minimum as a passenger for this package, 4 hours is a long time), and travellers with a tight schedule wanting to fit in other activities in the afternoon.

Manawa price: €400 per quad for the 4-hour package. Same price for 1 or 2 people per quad (1 driver + 1 passenger from age 8). A valid car licence is mandatory for the driver. Flexible cancellation with rescheduling or a free refund. Bring long clothing (4 hours of riding on a dusty track will leave bare arms marked), an extra water bottle, and sunscreen to reapply.

This package is run by Adventure Quad Réunion, a company independent from Les Quads de la Plaine, based in Villèle (500m from the museum of the same name) in the Saint-Paul highlands. The meeting point is more convenient if you're staying in Saint-Gilles or La Saline-les-Bains: allow 10 minutes' drive from the seafront, versus 25-30 minutes to reach La Plaine, Saint-Paul.

The quad used is a Polaris Sportsman 570cc, a lighter machine than Les Quads de la Plaine's CF-MOTO 625cc, but just as capable on the Hauts trails. The 1-hour route crosses sugar cane fields and orchards at mid-altitude, with a few sections of forest track and viewpoints over the west coast and the lagoon. The briefing lasts 15 to 20 minutes, and the instructor runs each driver through a handling course before setting off as a group.

At 4.9 out of 5 from 18 Manawa reviews, it's less reviewed in volume than the La Plaine listing (120 reviews), but the feedback is solid and the entry price drops to €100 per vehicle. Suitable for a group of friends (8 vehicles max per departure) and kids from age 8 as a passenger. Driver must be 18 with a valid car licence. A €1,500 deposit is taken per quad (cheque or card pre-authorisation).

Manawa price: €100 per quad for 1 hour. The same listing offers 2 hours at €180, 3 hours at €280, and a 6h30 full day at €510. Flexible cancellation with rescheduling or a weather refund. Closed shoes are mandatory; long trousers and sleeves, sunscreen and sunglasses are recommended. A reasonable level of fitness is expected: quad riding requires some arm strength beyond 2 hours.

This is Adventure Quad Réunion's full-day package, the most complete version of the Villèle offer. 7 hours on site including 5 hours of actual riding, with lunch at a farm at 1,400m altitude above Saint-Paul, wood-fired cooking amid high-altitude pastures that feel a world away from Saint-Gilles's seaside atmosphere.

The advantage of this package over the 4-hour Manawa La Plaine half-day is the 2-seat buggy option (+€40/vehicle, so €550 in total). The buggy is driven with a steering wheel and pedals like a car, which makes it more accessible than a quad for those who've never ridden one. It's also more stable uphill and more practical for carrying gear and a windbreaker at 1,400m altitude, where the temperature drops 8 to 10°C compared with the coast.

The route climbs the Maïdo forest trails, crosses cane fields and orchards, and reaches the high-altitude pastures where the partner farm is located. Lunch (wood-fired cooking, local produce) takes around 1h30, breaking up the physical fatigue of riding and letting you head back down fresh in the afternoon. Instructor Gilles supervises the group (16 people max), with two instructors if numbers require it.

Funbooker price: €510 for 1 quad (1-2 people), €550 for 1 buggy. Free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure. Driver must be 18 with a mandatory car licence, passenger from age 8. Long clothing is strongly recommended (dust plus altitude temperatures), closed shoes are mandatory, pack a windbreaker. Adventure Quad Réunion's standard deposit applies at departure.

What to know before booking

Licence and per-vehicle pricing

A car licence is mandatory to drive a quad or buggy in Reunion Island. The price is per vehicle, not per person: 1 driver + 1 passenger pay the same as a driver alone. A quad carries 1 or 2 people (driver + passenger from age 6-8 depending on the package), a buggy carries 2 people side by side.

Why Maïdo and not the volcano?

Maïdo (the Saint-Paul highlands) offers forest trails and cane-field tracks at mid-altitude (600 to 1,400m), with viewpoints over the west coast and the lagoon. Piton de la Fournaise (the Bourg-Murat, Plaine des Cafres area) offers more lunar terrain at 2,200m, with different companies (see the dedicated activity page). This page covers Maïdo and Saint-Paul only.

Getting to the meeting point

Both companies start in the Saint-Paul highlands. Villèle is about ten minutes' drive from the Saint-Gilles seafront, and La Plaine, Saint-Paul, 25 to 30 minutes; Les Quads de la Plaine shares the exact meeting spot after booking. With both starts up in the highlands, find a hire car to get there from your base on the west coast.

Deposit and insurance

  • Adventure Quad Réunion: a €1,500 deposit per quad (cheque or card imprint), released on return.
  • Les Quads de la Plaine: the deposit isn't explicitly stated on the Manawa listing, confirm at the time of booking.
  • Public liability insurance is included in the price at both companies.
  • In the event of a fall or vehicle damage, the excess is usually deducted from the deposit.

Clothing and preparation

Closed shoes are mandatory(no flip-flops or sandals). Long trousers and sleeves are strongly recommended (dust on the track, abrasion risk in a fall, sun protection over 2 to 4 hours of exposure). 100% mineral sunscreen, a cap, sunglasses. Pack a windbreaker for Adventure Quad's full-day package, which climbs to 1,400m altitude where it's 8 to 10°C cooler than seaside Saint-Paul.

Season and weather

In the dry season (May to November) the trails are in good shape and conditions are ideal. In the rainy season (December to April) the trails sometimes turn to mud and rides are rescheduled more often, but the vegetation is greener and photos have more contrast. Go for the morning slot year-round: more bearable temperatures, better light, and clearer visibility over the panoramas.

“A wonderful discovery of Reunion Island's wild highlands on near-untouched trails, aboard superb machines that handle any terrain.”

“A wonderful new way to see the island from a different angle. We did a 2-hour ride as complete beginners. A 1-hour ride really would have been too short. Everything is provided (helmet, gloves, rain jacket, water bottle). Thierry was fantastic: enthusiastic and a great teacher.”

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about quad biking at Maïdo

What's the price of a quad at Maïdo in 2026?
Expect €100 per quad for the 1-hour package at Adventure Quad Réunion (Villèle, 4.9/5 from 18 reviews) and €110 at Les Quads de la Plaine (La Plaine, Saint-Paul, 5/5 from 120 reviews). Beyond that: €165 for 2 hours, €220 for 3 hours, €400 for the 4-hour half-day with restaurant lunch at Les Quads de la Plaine, €510 for the 7-hour full day with farm lunch at 1,400m at Adventure Quad Réunion.
From what age can you ride a quad at Maïdo?
Driver: 18 with a valid car licence at both companies. Passenger: 6 minimum at Les Quads de la Plaine (La Plaine, Saint-Paul), 8 at Adventure Quad Réunion (Villèle) and on the longer packages. The price is per vehicle, not per person, so 1 driver + 1 passenger pay the same as a driver alone.
Do you need a licence to drive a quad?
Yes, a car licence is mandatory to drive a quad or buggy on commercial trips in Reunion Island. No specific quad licence is required. Passengers don't need a licence. Bring your original licence on the day of the ride (not a photocopy).
What's the difference between a quad and a buggy?
A quad is ridden like a motorbike, astride, with handlebars and a throttle grip. A buggy is driven like a car, seated with a steering wheel and pedals, with 2 seats side by side. The buggy is more accessible if you've never ridden a quad, more stable uphill, and more practical for carrying gear. In Reunion Island, only Adventure Quad Réunion via Funbooker offers the buggy by individual seat (€140 for 1 hour, €550 for the full day).
What's the best quad operator at Maïdo?
Both companies featured on this page (Les Quads de la Plaine and Adventure Quad Réunion) have excellent ratings (5/5 and 4.9/5). The difference is mostly geographic: Les Quads de la Plaine departs from La Plaine, Saint-Paul (higher up, wider panorama towards the cliffs), while Adventure Quad Réunion departs from Villèle (closer to Saint-Gilles, 10 minutes by car). Les Quads de la Plaine has more reviews in volume (120 vs 18).
How far in advance should you book?
Outside peak season (May-June, September-November excluding holidays), 3 to 5 days is enough. In high season (July-August, school holidays), plan 1 to 2 weeks ahead, especially for morning slots when conditions are most stable and the heat more bearable.
What happens in bad weather?
All the Manawa and Funbooker trips on this page have a flexible cancellation policy: rescheduling to another slot or a full refund if the team cancels for dangerous weather conditions (heavy rain, fog in the Hauts). Trips are rarely cancelled since the west Hauts trails are drivable even in overcast weather; the main issue is rain turning the track to mud.
What should you bring on a quad ride?
Closed shoes (mandatory, no flip-flops or sandals), long trousers and sleeves recommended (dust on the track, abrasion risk in a fall), 100% mineral sunscreen, a cap or hat, sunglasses. Pack a windbreaker if you're heading up to 1,400m on Adventure Quad's full-day package. Bring your own water in addition to the bottle provided on 2h+ packages.
Quad, microlight or helicopter: which is best for exploring Maïdo?
A quad keeps you on the ground, close to the vegetation and the trails of the Hauts (the island's highlands), for €100 to €510 depending on duration. A microlight is a powered flight over Maïdo and the cirques for €75 to €195: the aerial view without the riding. A helicopter is a panoramic flight in an enclosed cabin for €190 to €345: the widest coverage, but none of the ground-level feel. The three complement each other rather than replace one another.
Do you need to leave a deposit?
Yes, Adventure Quad Réunion asks for a €1,500 deposit per quad (cheque or card pre-authorisation) before departure, released on return if the vehicle comes back undamaged. Les Quads de la Plaine doesn't explicitly state a deposit on its Manawa listing, so check when you book. Either way, bring a bank card that works internationally.
