A quadbike is an electric-assist quadricycle, halfway between an electric mountain bike and a petrol quad: 4 wheels, fat tyres, and a silent electric motor that helps you pedal. Compared with a classic quad: no licence required, open to riders from age 9 (Étang-Salé forest), cheaper (€70-100 versus €100-220 for a petrol quad) and no engine noise. Ideal for families and travellers without a driving licence.

There are 2 tours in Reunion Island, run by the island's only operator, Quadbike Runners (a pioneer of off-road electric quadricycles on the island): the Plaine des Sables at Piton de la Fournaise for the lunar scenery at 2,200m, and the Étang-Salé forest for families. For classic petrol machines, see the Quad Biking at Maïdo page and the Buggy page.

This is Quadbike Runners' signature excursion (€100 per person): half a day aboard a Quadbike Hybrid electric-assist quadricycle (with fat tyres) on the Plaine des Sables, one of the island's most otherworldly landscapes, at 2,200m at the foot of Piton de la Fournaise. The reddish ground and volcanic sand look like the surface of Mars; NASA has even tested lunar rovers here.

The route leads to Piton de Bert, passing through the volcano's forest and the Plaine des Sables itself, with a clear view over the crater of Piton de la Fournaise (an active volcano, with an eruption roughly every 9 months on average). With a bit of luck, you might even see an eruption during the tour. The electric-assist quadbike lets you enjoy the landscape without the effort of a regular mountain bike: the motor helps on the climbs and the fat tyres soak up the rough sections.

Who it suits: travellers who want to experience Piton de la Fournaise without the hike (5-7 hours) or the €220 price tag of a petrol quad (see the Quad Biking at Maïdo page for comparison), families with children above the operator's minimum age (check the Manawa listing), and couples and groups of 2-6 people who like close supervision. Who it doesn't suit: anyone after a loud, petrol-engined machine (book the classic quad at €220 on the same Plaine des Sables instead), children under 9, and very tight budgets (the €70 Étang-Salé tour is cheaper).

€100 per person on Manawa. The 5/5 rating from 7 Manawa reviews comes with repeated praise for the scenery and how easy the riding is. Coffee and croissants are included halfway through. A fleece and a rain jacket are strongly recommended (it's 10-15°C colder at 2,200m than on the coast, and fog or rain can roll in quickly). Flexible Manawa cancellation.

This is Quadbike Runners' family excursion (€70 per person, from age 9): half a day in the Étang-Salé forest, the island's last dry forest, on the west coast between Saint-Leu and Saint-Pierre. The setting is very different from the Plaine des Sables: shady woodland tracks with a few moderate climbs, descents and technical sections, perfect for getting started on a quadbike without the harsher conditions at altitude.

The big plus of the Étang-Salé tour: children from age 9 can ride their own quadbike (rare for this kind of activity, since a petrol quad requires a driving licence, so 18+). It's a safe way to introduce the whole family to off-road riding, with an experienced guide leading the way and giving tips.

Who it suits: families with children aged 9-15 looking for a safe off-road activity, travellers staying on the west coast (Saint-Leu, Saint-Gilles, Saint-Pierre) who want a half-day out without a 2-hour drive up to the volcano, and beginners who want easier terrain before tackling the Plaine des Sables. Who it doesn't suit: anyone after the lunar scenery of the Plaine des Sables (book the €100 volcano tour instead), anyone after a loud, petrol-engined machine (the quadbike is silent and electric).

€70 per person on Manawa, rated 5/5 from 5 reviews, with praise for the guide's teaching and how well the tour suits children. Sports clothing and closed shoes are compulsory. If you book the morning slot, you'll have time the same day for Étang-Salé beach (the island's only black sand beach) or Croc Parc (the crocodile farm next door).

Operators

Electric quadbike or petrol quad?

Quadbike Runners

The only operator
Plaine des Sables (Piton de la Fournaise) + Étang-Salé forest

The only electric-assist quadbike operator in Reunion Island and a pioneer of off-road electric quadricycles on the island. 12 reviews in total, all 5/5, across its 2 Manawa listings (7 on the Plaine des Sables, 5 at Étang-Salé). The machine is different from a petrol quad: silent, eco-friendly and easier to ride. About 6-8 quadbikes per session.

Bourbon Excursions

Plaine des Sables (petrol quad)

A petrol alternative in the same Piton de la Fournaise / Plaine des Sables area: a classic petrol quad at €220 per person (Manawa listing 13244, 5/5 from 16 reviews). More powerful and faster than an electric-assist quadbike, but pricier and noisier. Worth considering if you want a classic quad ride at the volcano.

Adventure Quad Réunion

Villèle (Saint-Paul, above Saint-Gilles)

A petrol quad and buggy operator in the west of the island (€100 per person for a quad, €140 for a buggy). See the Quad Biking at Maïdo and Buggy in Reunion Island pages. No electric quadbikes; for those, book Quadbike Runners.

Good to know

Getting ready for a quadbike outing

  • No licence required: unlike a petrol quad, you can ride an electric quadbike without a driving licence.
  • A fleece and rain jacket are compulsory on the Plaine des Sables tour (2,200m, 10-15°C colder than the coast, fog and rain possible).
  • Sports clothing and closed shoes are compulsory on both tours.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential (UV is stronger at altitude, and on the Plaine des Sables sunglasses also protect you from abrasive dust).
  • A water bottle for both tours (drinks aren't always provided, apart from the coffee and croissants halfway through).
  • You need a hire car to reach the meeting point (Pas des Sables or the Croc Parc car park): the operator doesn't offer transfers.
  • Weather: the tour may be postponed in heavy rain, thick fog or strong winds at altitude. Manawa's cancellation policy is flexible, with a full refund if you cancel in time.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about electric quad biking

What is a quadbike, and how is it different from a quad?
A quadbike is an electric-assist quadricycle, halfway between an electric mountain bike and a petrol quad. It has 4 wheels like a quad, but the motor is electric and assists you as you pedal. Compared with a petrol quad, it is silent (no noise in the countryside), eco-friendly (zero emissions), easier to ride (no driving licence needed, from age 9 at Étang-Salé) and cheaper (€70-100 versus €100-220 for a petrol quad). Drawbacks: it is less powerful (not suited to very technical trails) and needs a little physical effort (pedalling with assistance).
What does a quadbike excursion cost in Reunion Island in 2026?
Expect €70 per person for the family tour in the Étang-Salé forest (age 9+) and €100 for the flagship tour on the Plaine des Sables at Piton de la Fournaise. Both are run by Quadbike Runners (the island's only electric-assist quadricycle operator), sold through Manawa with flexible cancellation. For comparison, a classic petrol quad costs €100 with Adventure Quad Réunion (Maïdo) or €220 with Bourbon Excursions (Plaine des Sables).
Do you need a driving licence to ride a quadbike?
No, an electric-assist quadbike doesn't require a driving licence (unlike a petrol quad). That's the main advantage if you don't have one or are travelling with teenagers. On the Étang-Salé tour, riders can be as young as 9 (check the Manawa listing when booking), which makes it a family activity. On the Plaine des Sables tour, the minimum age is higher (check when booking, generally 12+).
Quadbiking at the volcano: what precautions should you take?
At 2,200m on the Plaine des Sables, it is 10-15°C colder than on the coast and the weather can change quickly (fog, rain). A fleece and a rain jacket are compulsory even in good weather lower down. The volcanic dust is abrasive, so bring sunglasses to protect your eyes. During an eruption, the authorities may restrict access to the site; the operator then postpones the tour (refund or credit).
Étang-Salé forest or Plaine des Sables: which should you choose?
Plaine des Sables (€100): a lunar landscape at 2,200m at the foot of Piton de la Fournaise, the most striking scenery of the two, with a view of the active crater. Étang-Salé forest (€70): shady woodland near the coast, from age 9, with a gentler feel. For a first quadbike ride, Étang-Salé is easier (moderately technical terrain). If you have more time and experience, the Plaine des Sables is unmissable for the scenery.
Where is Quadbike Runners based?
Quadbike Runners has no central base: you meet at the car park for each tour. For the Plaine des Sables, meet at Pas des Sables (Forest Road 5 to the volcano), reached from Bourg-Murat and the Plaine des Cafres. For Étang-Salé, meet near Croc Parc in the forest. The upside: you arrive straight at the activity site. The downside: you need your own vehicle (a hire car).
How long does an excursion last?
Both tours last half a day (~3-3.5 hours), including the briefing, gearing up, the ride and a break (coffee and croissants on the volcano tour). It's the ideal length: enough to enjoy the scenery without wearing yourself out. You can add other visits the same day: Pas de Bellecombe (a crater viewpoint) after the volcano tour, or the black sand beach or Croc Parc after Étang-Salé.
Do you need to book in advance?
Yes, strongly recommended. Each session is limited to 6-8 quadbikes (one per rider). In high season (July-August, French school holidays, Christmas and New Year), book 7 to 14 days ahead; in low season, 2-3 days is enough. 2026 prices checked when this page was last updated. Manawa's cancellation policy is flexible: cancel in time (see the listing for deadlines) for a full refund.
