In Reunion Island, you can do it in 3 historic places: the Étang-Salé dry forest(the island's only preserved dry forest, the most complete tour), Saint-Pierre harbour (the capital of the south, colonial history) and Cilaos village(the island's only mountain Segway tour, at 1,200m altitude).

3 listings compared from my partners Viator (Étang-Salé €119 + Saint-Pierre €79, operator Mobilboard) and Funbooker (Cilaos €69, operator Monira Segway Tour). Average rating 4.85/5 from 102 Viator reviews in total (the 2 Mobilboard listings). For other motorised activities, see my Quad Biking page and Buggy page.

This is the signature Segway experience in Reunion Island: €119 per person for 3 hours of all-terrain Segway riding (a Mobilboard model with big cleated tyres) through the Étang-Salé dry forest, the island's only preserved dry forest. The outing is rated 4.9/5 from 73 verified Viator reviews, making it the most reviewed and best-rated package in my selection.

The programme: getting to grips with the Segway on flat ground (a 15-20 minute technical briefing), then crossing black sand dunes, dry savanna, wild beaches, a pond and ocean viewpoints, weaving between screw pines, chocas, tamarind trees and eucalyptus. The outing ends with a sunset cocktail on the shore, a chance to unwind after the ride. It's the only listing in my selection to include the cocktail.

Who it's for: travellers looking for an original, complete sunset activity (guaranteed Instagram material), couples and groups of friends aged 14+ who want to try Segway riding out in nature rather than in town, travellers based on the west or south-west coast (Étang-Salé is 30 minutes from Saint-Pierre, 45 minutes from Saint-Gilles). Who it's not for: under 14s, people with balance issues or neurological conditions, and anyone with dust or pollen allergies (the dry forest can be dusty).

Viator price: €119 per person. Rated 4.9/5 from 73 reviews (individual feedback is accessible directly on the Viator listing, with free cancellation up to 24h before). Included: local guide, all-terrain Mobilboard Segway, helmet, briefing, final cocktail. Not included: transport to the meeting point (you'll need a hire car). Several departures a day depending on bookings.

This is the Saint-Pierre city tour package: €79 per person for 2-3 hours of Segway riding in the capital of the south, discovering its colonial charm and seafront. You ride through the historic districts linked to the British East India Company (19th-century coffee-trade warehouses), the marina, the grand neoclassical villas of the town centre and the seafront.

The beauty of a Segway in town: you cover 5-7km in 2-3 hours without tiring, with narrated stops at the main points of interest (the cathedral, the town hall, the seafront garden, the open-air market). Ideal for travellers who want a complete cultural introduction to Saint-Pierre without walking for 4-5 hours in the tropical heat.

Who it's for: travellers based in or passing through Saint-Pierre who want to discover the island's colonial history, couples and friends aged 14+ looking for an original cultural activity, travellers who find long walks difficult (the Segway is less tiring). Who it's not for: under 14s, those looking for a nature experience (book the Étang-Salé package at €119 or Cilaos at €69 instead).

Viator price: €79 per person. Rated 4.8/5 from 29 Viator reviews (accessible directly on the partner listing). Free cancellation up to 24h before. Included: local guide, Segway, helmet. Not included: transport, meals. Available several days a week depending on Mobilboard's schedule. A good option to combine with a tasting at the Saint-Pierre market (Saturday morning) or an evening on the seafront.

This is the only mountain Segway listing in my selection: €69 per person for a guided Segway tour of Cilaos village, run by Monira Segway Tour. The tour lasts 1-2 hours and covers the village centre (Creole architecture, Notre-Dame-des-Neiges church, thermal baths, market) and the outskirts through a cryptomeria forest with views over the cirque's ramparts.

The setting is completely different from the other two packages: Cilaos is a high-altitude village (1,200m) tucked inside a volcanic cirque listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, with a cool, wooded mood rather than a tropical one. The Segway makes the village's gentle slopes effortless, and the operator provides a raincoat if needed (afternoon clouds can roll in fast at this altitude).

Who it's for: travellers staying in Cilaos for 2-3 days who want a gentle activity to complement Fleur Jaune canyoning or the La Chapelle hike, couples and friends aged 14+ looking for a different way to explore the cirque (most visits are on foot or by car), active travellers who want to alternate physical activities with cultural discovery. Who it's not for: travellers just passing through Cilaos for a few hours (Cilaos deserves more time), those looking for a more complete package like Étang-Salé.

Funbooker price: €69 per person. The listing has no published reviews yet (the operator joined Funbooker recently). Included: guide, Segway rental, compulsory helmet, raincoat if needed. Free Funbooker cancellation. Easy to combine with my other Cilaos activities (see the Fleur Jaune Canyoning, La Chapelle Hike and Cilaos Quad Biking pages).

A local Cilaos operator listed on Funbooker for the guided Segway tour of the village (€69, a recent listing). A cirque specialist, offering routes suited to the high-altitude village's terrain. A raincoat is provided in case of rain (common in the afternoon at 1,200m).

Express Segway Saint-Pierre (Funbooker)

Saint-Pierre

A 1-hour express Segway tour in Saint-Pierre listed on Funbooker at €39/person (a complementary listing to the €79/2-3h Viator package). To be transparent: it isn't one of my 3 main listings, which focus on the most complete tours, but you can still book it directly.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about Segway riding in Reunion Island

What is a Segway and how does it work?
A Segway (or self-balancing scooter) is a 2-wheeled electric vehicle with a handlebar, designed to carry one standing person. It works via a gyroscope system that detects the body's lean: leaning forward accelerates, leaning back brakes or reverses, turning the handlebar steers. Getting the hang of it takes a 15-20 minute briefing before the tour. Top speed is about 20km/h in normal mode, with a range of 25-40km depending on the model.
What does a Segway tour cost in Reunion Island in 2026?
Expect €69 to €119 per person depending on the package: €119 for the 3h Étang-Salé Green Tour (forest + beach + cocktail), €79 for the 2-3h Saint-Pierre City Tour (harbour + town), €69 for the 1-2h Cilaos village tour. The Étang-Salé tour is the most complete and best rated; Saint-Pierre is the urban option; Cilaos is one of a kind (mountain Segway riding). A €39/1h express Saint-Pierre package also exists on Funbooker for very tight budgets.
What's the minimum age for Segway riding?
The minimum age is 14 on all 3 listings in my selection. Younger children aren't allowed (insurance constraints and the ability to balance). For teens aged 14-17, a parent must sign the liability waiver when booking or on site. No maximum age, but Segway riding requires a sense of balance and no neurological issues (vertigo, balance disorders). If in doubt, mention any medical constraints when booking.
Do you need experience to ride a Segway?
No, every tour starts with a 15-20 minute technical briefing on flat ground before setting off (getting familiar with the vehicle, braking exercises, turns, going up/downhill). 95% of participants master the vehicle after the briefing and can join the group without difficulty. If you're nervous or don't manage the briefing, the operator can adapt the outing or offer a refund (Viator and Funbooker both have flexible policies).
What gear should you bring?
Comfortable clothing (shorts or trousers depending on the weather, closed shoes like trainers; no flip-flops or chunky-soled hiking boots). SPF 50 sunscreen, sunglasses, a cap or hat (intense UV even under the canopy). A water bottle for the 3h Étang-Salé package. The compulsory helmet is provided by the operator on all 3 listings. For Cilaos at altitude, bring a jumper or rain jacket (it's cool up there). For Étang-Salé, something to keep the dust out is useful (a bandana, wraparound sunglasses).
Étang-Salé, Saint-Pierre or Cilaos: which should you pick?
Étang-Salé (€119, 3h): the most complete and best rated (dry forest + savanna + beach + sunset cocktail), ideal for a genuine nature experience with a relaxed mood. Saint-Pierre (€79, 2-3h): the most cultural (colonial history, marina, bourgeois villas), perfect for a half-day discovering the capital of the south. Cilaos (€69, 1-2h): the most original (the island's only mountain Segway tour), to combine with a 2-3 day stay in the cirque.
Should you book ahead?
Yes, it's strongly recommended. Segways are limited in number (6-8 per session depending on the operator), and listings fill up in high season (July-August, French school holidays, long weekends). Book 7-14 days ahead in high season, 2-3 days in low season. 2026 prices verified as of the update date. Free cancellation with Viator (up to 24h before) and Funbooker (a flexible policy). If the weather turns bad (storms, heavy rain), the operator reschedules the outing with a full refund if needed.
Is Segway riding dangerous?
No, Segway riding is generally safe under professional supervision: a full briefing, moderate speed, a compulsory helmet, a route suited to the group's level. The main risk is falling if you lose your balance, but the gyroscope system reacts fast and the helmet protects your head. Across my selection (102 Viator reviews in total), no feedback mentions a serious incident. Segway injuries reported in France mainly involve unsupervised riding.
