Best hotels in Balaclava and Turtle Bay: 8 resorts between reef and ruins

Turtle Bay has been a 485-hectare marine park since 2000. Along its shores, Balaclava is where the north-west coast's big resorts cluster: six graded 5-star, with the Oberoi at 5-star Luxury, plus two more family-oriented 4-stars. Every one is rated 8/10 or higher by Agoda guests.

The marine park's shoreline is often rocky or coral: pack water shoes and expect to use the pool as much as the beach. The airport is about an hour away ( 60 km ).

The independent guide to planning your trip to Reunion Island

We bring together more than 470 partner activities (helicopter, paragliding, hiking, diving, whale-watching cruises, airport transfers...), a wide catalogue of hotels and gîtes, and dozens of practical guides. An independent site run by someone passionate about Reunion Island.

Balaclava lines Turtle Bay on the north-west coast, between Pointe aux Piments to the north and Baie du Tombeau to the south. The marine park protects the reef, lagoon and beaches across 485 hectares, home to around 300 species of fish and about a hundred corals, with the best underwater visibility from September to November.

There's history here too. The Balaclava ruins, an 18th-century national monument, recall the foundry and arsenal built under Mahé de La Bourdonnais, wrecked by an explosion in 1774. They lie within the Maritim's grounds and can be visited for a fee.

Don't expect a lively village: people come for the resorts, their spas and their clubs. Port-Louis and Grand Baie are each about twenty minutes away, and the Pamplemousses botanical garden is close by.

The Oberoi from above: a jetty over the lagoon, pavilions among the trees and parasols along the shore
#1
Breakfast included

The Oberoi

5-star Luxury resort, 71 pavilions and villas
Turtle Bay, on Turtle Bay
9.1Exceptional51 reviews
Best for : a quiet, high-end stay in a pavilion or villa

Opened in 2001, the Oberoi sits in eight hectares of gardens on Turtle Bay. Its 71 units, 48 pavilions and 23 villas under thatched roofs, are scattered through the greenery, and some villas have their own pool. The Tourism Authority grades it 5-star Luxury, and it holds five stars from Forbes Travel Guide.

There are two sea-facing pools ( 25 m and 20 m ), a spa with open-air treatment rooms and five places to eat and drink, including The Gunpowder Room and On the Rocks. Kids have The Hub, with a heated pool and a treehouse. Guests rave about the villas, the spa, the beautifully kept gardens and the free water sports.

What stands out
  • Thatched pavilions and villas
  • Villas with private pools
  • Spa with open-air treatment rooms
  • The Hub kids' club

Worth knowing : The largely landscaped beach is rockier than in the south of the island: coarse sand and a very shallow lagoon, so bring water shoes.

The Westin Turtle Bay from above: a winding pool, a tree-lined beach, a jetty and the bay
#2
Breakfast included

The Westin Turtle Bay

5-star resort, 190 rooms and suites
Turtle Bay, on the reef
8.5Very good132 reviews
Best for : a wellness break, as a couple or a family

Opened in December 2014 on ten hectares of Turtle Bay, the Westin has 190 rooms and suites and is part of Marriott Bonvoy. Its highlight is the Heavenly Spa: 1,500 m², ten treatment rooms, a sauna and a hammam.

One of the two pools, the Whisper Zone, is adults-only. Five restaurants cover mealtimes, from the Seasonal Tastes buffet to Fusion's Japanese and Kangan's Indian cooking, and the Retreat Bar has a big rum list. The kids' club takes 4 to 12-year-olds, and the staff get plenty of praise in reviews.

What stands out
  • 1,500 m² Heavenly Spa
  • Adults-only pool
  • Five restaurants and a rum bar
  • Kids' club for ages 4-12

Worth knowing : Coral rather than sand in front of the hotel ( reef shoes help ), disappointing snorkelling from the beach, and nothing to walk to nearby.

InterContinental Balaclava from above: a white-sand beach, coconut palms, a pool and the resort buildings
#3
Breakfast included

InterContinental Balaclava Fort

5-star resort, 210 rooms and suites
Balaclava, on the seafront
8.4Very good117 reviews
Best for : families who care as much about the pool as the beach

On the Balaclava coast road, the InterContinental has 210 rooms including 30 suites, every one with a sea-view terrace. Port-Louis and Grand Baie are both about twenty minutes away, which makes it a handy base for exploring.

Four restaurants each do something different: Senso the buffet, Segala Mediterranean, Veda Indian and Noble House Thai and Vietnamese. There are two heated infinity pools, a spa and the Planet Trekkers club for 4 to 12-year-olds, with a shallow area for little ones. All-inclusive is available. Reviews praise the spacious rooms and the restaurants.

What stands out
  • Sea-view terrace in every room
  • Two heated infinity pools
  • Four restaurants
  • Kids' club for ages 4-12

Worth knowing : Several reviews say the shore has become more rock than sand, so swimming happens mostly in the pool and snorkelling means a boat trip. A few comments on upkeep in some rooms and a repetitive buffet.

The Maritim from above: a tree-lined shore, a jetty on the bay and mountains in the distance
#4
Breakfast included

Maritim Resort & Spa

5-star resort on a 25-hectare estate
Balaclava, on an 800 m beach
8.3Very good125 reviews
Best for : active families and history buffs

A 25-hectare private estate crossed by the Citrons river and its waterfalls, with an 800-metre beach on Turtle Bay. The Balaclava ruins, an 18th-century national monument, are inside the grounds.

There's a 9-hole golf course ( free green fees ), a 3,500 m² spa, the Turtle Kids Club, a farm with giant tortoises, stables and a dive centre, so the days fill up without leaving. Seven restaurants, including fine dining at Château Mon Désir and Lakaz Kreol, and five bars, among them The Nest on the roof. The upscale all-inclusive covers dinners across several restaurants.

What stands out
  • Balaclava ruins on the estate
  • 9-hole golf with free green fees
  • 3,500 m² spa
  • Kids' club and giant tortoise farm

Worth knowing : The best stretch of beach is reserved for suite guests, the seabed is pebbly and snorkelling disappoints. Some restaurants charge extra and the all-inclusive rules are seen as confusing.

Le Jadis: a tiered pool and thatched shelters in front of the resort buildings, with the sea beyond
#5
Breakfast included

Le Jadis Beach Resort & Wellness

5-star resort, 54 suites and a villa
Balaclava, on a sheltered cove
8.0Very good73 reviews
Best for : a honeymoon in a suite with its own pool

The former Angsana Balaclava, managed by Banyan Tree, is all about privacy: 54 suites and a villa on a sheltered cove next to the marine park. Thirty-four suites have their own infinity pool.

French cooking at Sylea, Creole at Passion Creole, Asian at Oryza and Cruso on the beach, plus dinners on the sand or aboard a catamaran. There's a sand-bottomed pool with a bar, a heated lap pool, a hydrotherapy pool and a spa whose therapists trained at the Banyan Tree academy. Guests remember the privacy, the private pools and the staff.

What stands out
  • 34 suites with private pools
  • Only 55 units
  • Banyan Tree-trained spa
  • Dinners on the beach or on a catamaran

Worth knowing : The beach is small and rocky ( water shoes help ), dinner choice feels limited on a long stay, and no all-inclusive plan is advertised.

A suite living room at Le Méridien Ile Maurice with a huge picture window open to the sea
#6
Breakfast included

Le Méridien Ile Maurice

5-star resort, 261 rooms and suites
Pointe aux Piments, on 1 km of beach
8.2Very good226 reviews
Best for : a big resort that keeps families and couples apart

North of Turtle Bay at Pointe aux Piments, Le Méridien went through a $60 million renovation announced in 2022. All 261 rooms and suites face the ocean, along a kilometre of beach.

At the northern end, the Nirvana wing is adults-only: 51 rooms with their own reception, beach and infinity pool. The rest of the resort welcomes families, with a club for 4 to 12-year-olds. There are four restaurants, including Nomad ( buffet ), Kumin ( Indian ) and Paparazzi ( Italian, on the beach ), three bars, three pools and the Explore Spa. Reviews like the sandy beach close to the rooms and the snorkelling from the shore.

What stands out
  • Adults-only Nirvana wing
  • Every room faces the ocean
  • Snorkelling from the beach
  • All-inclusive available

Worth knowing : Service is seen as not very proactive, the pool isn't heated, the way into the sea is rocky in places and evenings are quiet.

The Ravenala Attitude from above: coconut palms, pools, thatched roofs and the beach
#7
Breakfast included

The Ravenala Attitude

4-star all-suite hotel, 272 suites
Balaclava, between the sea and the Citrons river
8.0Very good75 reviews
Best for : families with kids and teens, all-inclusive

A 272-suite 4-star between Turtle Bay and the mouth of the Citrons river, built around all-inclusive: Attitude's All-In All-Out plan also lets you eat at other places.

The hotel lists nine restaurants and six bars, including the Japanese Lime, a POZ spa and two free clubs: Ayo Le Dodo for ages 3-12 and Teens Republic for 12-18s. Couples get Executive Seafront Adult suites and a beach of their own. Guests praise the value, the staff and the sheer number of activities.

What stands out
  • Free clubs for kids and teens
  • Nine restaurants
  • All-inclusive with dine-out option
  • Adults-only beach

Worth knowing : The river mouth clouds the water after rain, the seabed is rocky and the narrow beach fills up in the afternoon. It's a big hotel and can feel impersonal.

Ocean's Creek from above: a rectangular pool, a yellow and blue waterslide and white loungers
#8
Breakfast included

Ocean's Creek Beach Hotel

4-star hotel, 136 rooms and studios
Le Goulet, 200 m from Le Goulet beach
8.6Superb43 reviews
Best for : families after a lively stay at a gentler price

South of Balaclava at Le Goulet, on the banks of the Tombeau river, this hotel opened in 2023 and doesn't pretend to be a luxury resort: it's the lively family option on our list. Le Goulet beach is about 200 metres away.

Its 136 rooms, from family rooms and suites to 34-67 m² studios, share a pool with waterslides and a swim-up bar. There's also a hot tub, a spa with a hammam, a kids' club and a climbing wall, Le Jardin and The Rum Shed restaurants, and boat trips on the river. Guests like the welcome, the entertainment and the value for money.

What stands out
  • Pool with waterslides
  • Kids' club and climbing wall
  • Family rooms and studios
  • Boat trips on the river

Worth knowing : It isn't on the beach. Day-pass visitors add crowds and noise, and the food is seen as average.

Where to stay

From Pointe aux Piments to Le Goulet

North to south, along four or five kilometres of shoreline.

Pointe aux Piments

Further south towards Baie du Tombeau, a more residential stretch on the Tombeau river, home to Ocean's Creek.

By type of trip

Which hotel suits you in Balaclava and Turtle Bay?

Couples

The Oberoi and its villas, Le Jadis and its private-pool suites, or the adults-only Nirvana wing at Le Méridien.

Families

The Ravenala with two free clubs, the Maritim and its giant tortoise farm, the InterContinental and its Planet Trekkers club, or Ocean's Creek and its waterslides.

Luxury

The Oberoi, the only one on the bay in our list graded 5-star Luxury, then the Westin for its spa and Le Jadis for privacy. Compare with our pick of 5-star hotels in Mauritius.

Tighter budget

The two 4-stars: The Ravenala ( all-inclusive, €192 at our last check ) and the newer, more family-focused Ocean's Creek ( €143 ).

Practical tips

What the marine park means for your stay

When to go

The north-west coast is sheltered from the trade winds in the southern winter, May to October, which is also the driest season. The sea ranges from 23.7 to 28.5 °C through the year, and the official cyclone season runs from 1 November to 15 May.

Snorkelling and diving

Snorkelling from the beach in front of the hotels is often disappointing. For the best reefs, take a boat trip or go with a dive centre, ideally between September and November for visibility.

The public beach

A small public beach of about 150 m near the Oberoi has free parking under the casuarinas, but no loungers or toilets. It gets busy at weekends.

Visiting the ruins

The Balaclava ruins are in the Maritim's grounds along the Citrons river. Non-guests pay to get in ( Rs 1,000 per non-Mauritian adult, according to the hotel's published rate ).

How this shortlist was put together

FAQ

Staying in Balaclava and Turtle Bay: your questions

What is the best hotel in Balaclava?
The Oberoi, rated 9.1/10 on Agoda, is our top pick for its garden pavilions and spa. It isn't right for everyone, though: with kids, The Ravenala or the Maritim have more going on, and Le Jadis suits a honeymoon in a private-pool suite better.
Can you swim at Balaclava?
Yes, but the marine park lagoon is very shallow and the shore often rocky, so water shoes are a good idea. At Pointe aux Piments, Le Méridien gets good reviews for its sandy beach close to the rooms and snorkelling from the shore.
Can you use the beach without staying at a hotel?
Under Mauritian law beaches are public, but fences and reserved areas often limit access in practice. At Balaclava, a small public beach of about 150 m near the Oberoi is open to everyone, with free parking.
How should I read the prices shown?
For each hotel, our check keeps the lowest rate found across three weekday dates a few weeks apart, for two adults. Last time round that came to €143 to €626 a night. Expect more in high season or at weekends, plus the €3 per person per night tourist tax ( ages 12+ ).
Which hotels are all-inclusive?
The Ravenala ( All-In All-Out ) and the Maritim ( upscale all-inclusive ) lead with it. The InterContinental and Le Méridien offer it too. Le Jadis doesn't advertise an all-inclusive plan.
Which Balaclava resort is best for a family holiday?
The Ravenala ( free clubs for 3-12s and 12-18s ), the Maritim ( Turtle Kids Club, giant tortoise farm ), the InterContinental and the Westin ( clubs for 4-12s ), and Ocean's Creek for its waterslides. The Oberoi has a club too, The Hub.
Are there adults-only areas?
Yes: the Nirvana wing at Le Méridien ( 51 rooms with their own beach and pool ), the Westin's Whisper Zone pool, the Ravenala's adults-only suites and beach.
How far is the airport transfer?
About an hour for 60 km. Le Jadis quotes 45 minutes, which assumes traffic is flowing around Port-Louis.
What is there to do around Balaclava?
For a sandy beach and a village, Trou aux Biches is just to the north; for nights out, Grand Baie.
