Best hotels in Trou aux Biches and Mont Choisy: 7 options between lagoon and casuarinas

Trou aux Biches or Mont Choisy? One has a lagoon known for snorkelling, the other three kilometres of sand shaded by casuarina trees. Between the two, and a little further south at Pointe aux Biches, the places to stay are mostly small: boutique hotels, aparthotels and residences, all rated at least 8/10 by Agoda guests, and a world away from the big Balaclava resorts next door.

The independent guide to planning your trip to Reunion Island

We bring together more than 470 partner activities (helicopter, paragliding, hiking, diving, whale-watching cruises, airport transfers...), a wide catalogue of hotels and gîtes, and dozens of practical guides. An independent site run by someone passionate about Reunion Island.

Trou aux Biches is a fishing village strung out along its beach, quieter than Grand Baie. The reef-sheltered lagoon is great for snorkelling straight off the sand, and glass-bottom boats take people out for a look. To the north-east, Mont Choisy has three kilometres of sand under century-old casuarinas, almost empty on weekdays and busy with Mauritian families at weekends.

Trou aux Biches beach was scheduled for a top-up: from mid-May to September 2026, 13,500 m³ of sand were due to be brought in to fight erosion, which had pushed the shoreline back by about forty metres between 1967 and 2012. The big Trou aux Biches Beachcomber, closed for renovation from 15 May to 15 October 2026, isn't ranked here. Coral Azur and Le Grand Bleu score under 8/10 with guests, and Le Cardinal isn't sold by our partner.

Our seven picks are a varied bunch: a Constance boutique hotel on the lagoon, an all-inclusive 4-star, a lifestyle hotel on Mont Choisy beach, plus aparthotels and residences with kitchens. It's an area for people who'd rather do their own thing than stay in a big resort.

FAQ

Staying in Trou aux Biches and Mont Choisy: your questions

Trou aux Biches or Mont Choisy: where should I stay?
Trou aux Biches for the village, restaurants on foot and snorkelling off the beach. Mont Choisy for a long, shady beach that's quiet on weekdays and shelves gently for kids. They're a few minutes apart by car.
What is the best hotel in Trou aux Biches?
To be right on the lagoon, Sakoa Boutik, rated 8.8/10 on Agoda. Voile Bleue ( 8.7/10 ), with its sea-view rooms, is a quieter alternative, and Veranda Pointe aux Biches is the better fit for families.
How much does it cost to stay in Trou aux Biches?
Watch out for breakfast: three of our picks either don't serve it or charge extra ( Mon Choisy Beach R, Be Cosy, Le Palmier ). The Agoda rates we logged, €67 to €591 for two on a weeknight, are often room-only, and the €3 per person per night tourist tax ( ages 12+ ) may come on top.
Is the Trou aux Biches Beachcomber open?
It's closed for renovation from 15 May to 15 October 2026, with reopening announced for 15 October. Our partner doesn't sell it, which is why it's not on this list. The public beach stayed open while the sand was being topped up.
Can you swim at Trou aux Biches?
Yes, the lagoon is calm and protected by the reef. Mont Choisy shelves very gently, which is perfect with children. At Pointe aux Biches the shore is rocky, so head to one of the two beaches.
Which places have a kitchen?
Sakoa Boutik and Voile Bleue ( kitchenettes ), Mon Choisy Beach R ( studios with full kitchens ), Le Palmier ( apartments ) and Be Cosy ( studios and apartments ).
Where should families stay?
Veranda Pointe aux Biches has a free club for 3 to 11-year-olds. Be Cosy and Le Palmier offer space and a kitchen. Mystik doesn't take under-12s.
How far is it from the airport?
Between 1 h 15 and 1 h 30 for 64-70 km, depending on traffic around Port-Louis.
Trou aux Biches, Balaclava or Grand Baie?
It depends on your evenings and your budget. Balaclava, just to the south, is lined with big 5-star resorts by the marine park. Grand Baie, 7 km away, has the nightlife and boat trips. Trou aux Biches sits in between: a quiet village with small-scale places to stay.
