Best hotels in Flic-en-Flac and Tamarin: 7 places facing the sunset

On the west coast, the sunset matters as much as the lagoon when you pick a hotel. Our cut-off ( 8/10 or more from Agoda guests, and bookable through our partner ) leaves seven places: five resorts lined up along Wolmar, a golf hotel and a more laid-back surf spot in Tamarin. Rates started at €127 a night when we checked.

Allow about an hour from the airport ( around 50 km ), longer when traffic backs up around Phoenix and Ébène. For swimming, Flic-en-Flac and Wolmar are sheltered by the reef; in Tamarin, with no reef, it's not really recommended.

The independent guide to planning your trip to Reunion Island

We bring together more than 470 partner activities (helicopter, paragliding, hiking, diving, whale-watching cruises, airport transfers...), a wide catalogue of hotels and gîtes, and dozens of practical guides. An independent site run by someone passionate about Reunion Island.

Flic-en-Flac runs along one of the longest beaches on the island, lined with casuarina trees and protected by the reef. The village and its restaurants are at the northern end; to the south, Wolmar is a string of beachfront resorts that ends at the point facing Tamarin Bay.

From Friday evening to Sunday, the public beach fills up with Mauritian families having picnics. It's a big part of the west coast's charm, and a good reason to stay in Wolmar if you're after quiet.

Hotels here are mostly upmarket: five resorts in Wolmar, four of them graded 5-star by the Tourism Authority. To widen the choice, we've included Tamarin, just to the south, with a golf hotel and a more affordable 3-star. Several well-known Flic-en-Flac hotels score below 8/10 with guests, so they're not on this list.

Right at the tip of Wolmar, where the coast bends round into Tamarin Bay, the Sands has 91 suites on about two and a half hectares, along a 240-metre crescent of beach. Children are only accepted from age 12, which tells you what the place is about: it's built for unwinding.

There are three restaurants: Tamarind Terrace, the Pink Peppercorn beach grill and Spices for Indian food, and the Dine Around deal lets you eat at the Maradiva next door too. A spa, kayaks and boat trips out to see the bay's dolphins fill the days, and the resort holds Green Globe certification.

What stands out

La Pirogue

4-star Superior resort, 248 bungalows
Wolmar, beachfront, over 1 km of sand
8.7Superb248 reviews
Best for : families, with free kids' clubs and water sports

La Pirogue opened in 1976 and turns 50 in 2026 without changing its formula: 248 rooms in palm-thatched bungalows laid out like a fishing village, in a coconut grove that runs along more than a kilometre of Wolmar beach. Sugar Beach, run by the same Sunlife group, is next door.

There's a free club for 2 to 11-year-olds and another for 12 to 17s. Windsurfing, paddleboarding, kayaks, Hobie Cats and a glass-bottom boat are all included. For food, there's a buffet at Wolmar, seafood at Magenta, Mauritian street food at the Coconut Café and around sixty wines by the glass at the Van Der Stel bar. Choose half board, full board or all-inclusive.

What stands out
  • Free kids' and teens' clubs
  • Non-motorised water sports included

  • Heated private pool in every villa
  • 750 m of beach facing Tamarin Bay

Practical tips

Dolphins, swimming and day trips

Dolphins, done responsibly

Tamarin Bay is home to a few hundred dolphins. Trips leave early in the morning with licensed operators, who have to keep a set distance. Swimming with whales has been banned since 2020. Our guide to dolphins and whales in Mauritius has the details.

Where to swim

In Flic-en-Flac and Wolmar, the reef-sheltered lagoon is good for snorkelling; in front of some hotels at the point, coral sits close to the surface, so wear reef shoes. Tamarin has no reef and no lifeguards: people surf there more than they swim.

Day trips

Casela nature park is about 5 km from Flic-en-Flac, and horse rides start from nearby Cascavelle. Further south, Chamarel and its Seven Coloured Earths and Le Morne are around twenty minutes from Tamarin. The underwater waterfall is best seen from above, by helicopter or seaplane.

Tourist tax and extras

A tourist tax of €3 per night for every guest aged 12 or over, in force since October 2025, is added if it's not already in your rate. At the resorts, drinks and snacks are often charged separately, which is where all-inclusive deals earn their keep.

How this shortlist was put together
  • An Agoda guest score of at least 8 out of 10, based on real stays.
  • Enough reviews for the score to mean something ( usually 30 or more ).
  • Proper places to stay ( hotels, guesthouses, lodges ): private holiday-flat listings are left out.
  • Location checked on the map, in town or just outside it.
  • Scores and prices pulled automatically from Agoda's partner API and refreshed regularly.

The "Check prices" buttons lead to Agoda, a partner of this site: a booking may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. Hotels don't pay to be ranked.

Which Flic-en-Flac hotels are on the beach?
All five Wolmar resorts: La Pirogue, Sugar Beach, the Hilton, Sands Suites and the Maradiva. In Tamarin, Tamarina has eight beachfront rooms, and the Veranda Tamarin faces the public beach across the road.
How much is a hotel in Flic-en-Flac?

Can you swim in Flic-en-Flac?
Yes, the reef shelters the lagoon and it's good for snorkelling. In front of some hotels at the southern point ( the Sands in particular ), coral comes close to the surface, so wear reef shoes. In Tamarin, further south, there's no reef and swimming isn't really recommended.
Flic-en-Flac or Tamarin?
Flic-en-Flac and Wolmar for the beach, the lagoon and the big resorts. Tamarin for surf culture, golf and lower prices, as long as you don't mind a beach that's not ideal for swimming. They're about ten minutes apart by car.
Are there all-inclusive hotels in Flic-en-Flac?
Yes: La Pirogue and Sugar Beach offer all-inclusive, as do Tamarina and the Veranda Tamarin ( its All Add In deal ). The Sands is mainly half board.
Where should families stay on the west coast?

About an hour for roughly 50 km, longer at rush hour around Phoenix and Ébène. Tamarin takes a little longer.
Flic-en-Flac, Grand Baie or Belle Mare?
Flic-en-Flac for sunsets, dolphins and quick trips to Chamarel and Le Morne. Grand Baie for the lively north and boat trips to the islets. Belle Mare for a beach almost ten kilometres long, more exposed to the trade winds.
