This site is first and foremost about Reunion Island, which has nothing quite like this. Reunion's big aerial sight is the Dolomieu crater by helicopter (see my Reunion Island helicopter guide); Mauritius has its underwater waterfall optical illusion. Here are the 2 bookable flights to see it. The same 2 packages also appear in my Mauritius helicopter guide, presented there as panoramic flights.

The underwater waterfall in Mauritius is one of the most photographed natural phenomena in the Indian Ocean. It's an optical illusion visible only from the sky, formed by ocean currents that constantly shift sandbanks around the Le Morne peninsula. Seen from 800m up, the moving sediment creates the impression of a waterfall plunging beneath the surface, when in reality the seabed is flat at this spot.

Two packages bookable on GetYourGuide include a dedicated pass over the phenomenon: a focused shared helicopter flight from Plaine Magnien at €1350 for the package (5/5 from 5 GYG reviews, the most accessible) or a private helicopter charter from Flic en Flac at €3,550 for the whole group. On a tighter budget, the standard panoramic flight from Port Louis (€729, see my Mauritius helicopter guide) also flies over the area. 2026 prices verified as of the update date below.

This is the most focused option in my selection for seeing the underwater waterfall optical illusion. A short flight of about 15 minutes over the Le Morne peninsula, with 2 to 3 passes over the phenomenon so passengers on both sides of the aircraft can get their photo. Rated 5 out of 5 on GetYourGuide from 5 verified reviews: not many yet, but consistently positive.

Taking off from Plaine Magnien (a helipad close to SSR Airport) suits travellers staying in the south-east or passing through the airport. You share the flight with other customers, up to 4-5 passengers depending on the helicopter model (AS350 Squirrel or Robinson R44).

Who it's for: travellers who just want the underwater waterfall shot without paying for a long panoramic flight (€729 on the standard package), travellers in transit through the airport (SSR is 5 minutes from Plaine Magnien), photographers on a tighter budget than the €3,550 private flight. Who it's not for: travellers who also want to see Chamarel and the west coast (book the €729 panoramic flight from Port Louis instead), groups who refuse to share with other passengers (book the €3,550 private waterfall flight instead).

GetYourGuide rate from €1,350 for the package. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Full details are also on my Mauritius helicopter guide (where this package is also listed, since it's technically a helicopter flight).

This package charters the aircraft exclusively for your group, departing from Flic en Flac on the west coast. The advantage over the €1,350 shared package from Plaine Magnien: take-off close to the west coast (no need to cross the island to reach the south-east helipad), a route entirely dedicated to the underwater waterfall and Le Morne, and duration and number of passes negotiable with the pilot. No reviews published to date on GetYourGuide for this listing.

The flat rate of €3,550 covers up to 4-5 passengers depending on the aircraft model, which works out to €710-890 per person for a full group. That's almost 3 times cheaper per head than a general private flight with no specific focus (€5,516 on listing 1284634), because the route is shorter and more targeted.

Who it's for: groups of 4 to 5 people who want to charter privately to spread the cost, travellers based on the west coast (Flic en Flac, Tamarin, Le Morne) who avoid the drive to Port Louis or Plaine Magnien, professional photographers who want to control the route and the timing of the passes. Who it's not for: solo travellers or couples (book the €1,350 shared package instead), travellers based in the north or east (a long trip to Flic en Flac).

GetYourGuide rate from €3,550 for the charter. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Booking ahead is recommended (helipad slots are limited on the west coast). The route is to be confirmed with the operator after booking. Full details are also on my Mauritius helicopter guide.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about the underwater waterfall in Mauritius

What is the underwater waterfall in Mauritius?
It's an optical illusion visible only from the sky, formed by ocean currents that constantly shift sandbanks around the Le Morne peninsula in the south-west of the island. Seen from the sea or the coast, nothing sets this area apart from the rest of the lagoon. Seen from about 800 metres up, the moving sandbanks create the illusion of a waterfall plunging beneath the ocean's surface. It's one of the most photographed natural phenomena in Mauritius.
Is there really a waterfall under the water in Mauritius?
No, the phenomenon is a pure optical illusion with no real waterfall. Ocean currents constantly carry sand and sediment that build up in 'rivers' above the continental shelf. Seen from above, these dynamic sand accumulations create the impression of an underwater waterfall. The seabed itself is flat at this spot. It's purely the aerial viewing angle that creates the waterfall effect.
How can you see the underwater waterfall in 2026?
Only from the air: there's no way to see it from a boat, from the beach or while diving. 2 options are currently bookable: the focused helicopter flight from Plaine Magnien at €1,350 for the package (5/5 from 5 GYG reviews, the most accessible) and the private helicopter charter from Flic en Flac at €3,550 for the full group (up to 4-5 passengers). The standard panoramic helicopter flights from Port Louis (€729) also fly over the area but without a dedicated pass over the phenomenon.
Can you see the underwater waterfall by seaplane?
The seaplane flies noticeably lower than the helicopter, which spoils the viewing angle (the illusion shows up far better from 800m than from 100-300m). On some 30-minute seaplane packages from Roches Noires, the pilot can make a pass over the waterfall depending on the weather, but the result is less iconic. For the magazine-cover shot, the helicopter is still the way to go.
Where can you see the underwater waterfall from the ground?
The nearest land-based viewpoint is the summit of Le Morne Brabant (555m), reached on a guided hike (see my Mauritius hiking guide, €44 for the climb). But the angle from the summit doesn't show the optical illusion as clearly as from the helicopter, because the perspective is sideways rather than looking straight down. To see the phenomenon, you need to be above Le Morne, not standing on it.
At what altitude do you see the underwater waterfall best?
The sweet spot is between 600 and 1,000 metres up, directly overhead or at an angle above the Le Morne peninsula. Too low (under 300m, as with a seaplane) and the illusion doesn't form, because the sandbanks just look like faint colour variations. Too high (over 1,500m, as on a commercial flight) and the detail is lost. Tourist helicopters generally operate within this 600-1,000m window.
What's the best time of year to see the underwater waterfall?
April to November (the dry austral winter) for the clearest skies and best visibility. Avoid January-February (cyclone season, flights are often cancelled). Morning (9-11am) generally gives the best light for photos: the sandbanks contrast better with the lagoon water in low-angle light. Afternoons can produce glare on the helicopter's windows.
What budget should you plan for seeing the underwater waterfall?
At minimum €1,350 for the package on the focused shared helicopter flight (5/5 from 5 GYG reviews, one price per aircraft with 4-5 seats). As a guide, a couple covering the full package on their own pays €675 each; a full group of 4 brings it down to €340 a head. The €3,550 charter split between 4-5 people works out to €700-900 a head. On a tighter budget, the most sensible option is the standard panoramic flight from Port Louis (€729 per person), which flies over the area without stopping specifically over it.
