Blue Bay and Mahébourg: a protected lagoon on the airport's doorstep

Fifteen minutes after touchdown, you could already have a snorkel on: that's the south-east's great advantage. Blue Bay marine park protects 353 hectares of lagoon and coral, Pointe d'Esny's beach looks across to Île aux Aigrettes, and Mahébourg, founded in the early 19th century under Governor Decaen, faces Lion Mountain from its waterfront.

The marine park is divided by buoys into swimming, conservation and channel zones, and fishing or collecting shells is banned. Stay in the swimming zone, and use a mask or a glass-bottom boat to see the coral.

The independent guide to planning your trip to Reunion Island

We bring together more than 470 partner activities (helicopter, paragliding, hiking, diving, whale-watching cruises, airport transfers...), a wide catalogue of hotels and gîtes, and dozens of practical guides. An independent site run by someone passionate about Reunion Island.

Within a few kilometres, the south-east changes character several times. Blue Bay, popular with Mauritians, is the closest resort area to the airport; Pointe d'Esny carries its lagoon northwards, facing Île aux Aigrettes, and Mahébourg keeps its market, waterfront and old houses. To the south-west, Le Chaland still fronts the marine park, while inland Plaine Magnien practically borders the airport.

The choice ranges from an official 5-star and a family resort to a transit hotel and guesthouses by the water or in town. The Shandrani, Blue Bay's other big resort, wasn't available on any date with our partner when we checked.

5-star resort, 164 rooms and 8 villas
Le Chaland, by the marine park, 5 km from the airport
9.2Exceptional16 reviews
Best for : an upmarket stay by the marine park, without a long transfer

Opened in 2019 under the Anantara name, IKO has been run by Constance since February 2026. At Le Chaland, on the edge of Blue Bay marine park, it has 164 rooms and 8 two- to four-bedroom villas with private pools, an infinity pool, a 25-metre lap pool and a spa.

The white-sand beach keeps a local feel, and the kids' club is free. Recent reviews praise high-quality renovated rooms, the service, breakfast and dinner. The airport is only five kilometres away, handy after a long flight.

What stands out
  • The area's only official 5-star sold by our partner
  • Villas with private pools
  • Free kids' club
  • Breakfast included at our last check

Worth knowing : The change of management is recent, so reviews still mix the Anantara and Constance eras, with slow service at times. It only has 16 reviews with our partner so far.

Preskil sits on a private peninsula at Pointe Jérôme, facing Île aux Aigrettes and Lion Mountain, on one of the island's biggest lagoons. Its 214 rooms look onto a beach that's longer and wider than most, with slightly coarse sand and few passers-by.

Sailing, water-skiing, paddleboarding, windsurfing and snorkelling are included, and there's an on-site dive centre. The Tikoulou clubs take children from three months. Four restaurants, including Konviv for Creole food, and the Banyan Spa round it off. Reviews praise the beach, the lagoon and the roomy bedrooms.

What stands out
  • Private peninsula and a big beach
  • Water sports included
  • Kids' clubs from three months
  • Breakfast included at our last check

What stands out
  • Central Mahébourg on foot
  • Helpful owner
  • Breakfast included at our last check
  • Airport shuttle available

Worth knowing : A simple inn with no pool or beach: Blue Bay is just under 6 km by road. Choose it for the price and location, not the comfort.

What stands out

It isn't on the water, but a free shuttle takes guests to a lagoon beach during the day, and another runs to the nearby shopping centre. Reviews like the airport access, the staff, the cleanliness and the pool. A night was €119 at our last check.

What stands out
  • Free airport shuttle
  • Beach shuttle
  • Pool and gym
  • Ideal for a transit night

Chantauvent

Family-run guesthouse, 18 rooms
Blue Bay, coast road, on the lagoon, 3 minutes' walk from Blue Bay
8.0Very good295 reviews

Between Pointe d'Esny and Blue Bay, this family-run 18-room guesthouse sits on the lagoon, with a waterside restaurant, a bar, a pool and massages. Rooms range from Cocoon to sea-view Premium, plus a villa.

What stands out
  • Right on the lagoon
  • Waterside restaurant
  • Pool

Practical tips

Four outings close to base

Blue Bay marine park

A national park since 1997 and a Ramsar site since 2008, it's home to more than 50 coral species and over 70 kinds of fish, including a giant brain coral. Glass-bottom boats leave from the beach, but a mask is often enough. More on our Blue Bay page.

Île aux Aigrettes

Less than a kilometre offshore, this 26-hectare nature reserve, run by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, protects a patch of dry coastal forest, pink pigeons and Aldabra tortoises. Visits are guided, take an hour and a half to two hours, and are booked online.

Mahébourg on foot

On Mondays, the market by the waterfront is at its busiest. Walk along the Waterfront facing Lion Mountain, then over the Cavendish bridge to Ville Noire. The national history museum has been closed for renovation since December 2025.

Vieux Grand Port and Lion Mountain

The Dutch landed at Vieux Grand Port in 1598, where the ruins of Fort Frederik Hendrik remain. The Lion Mountain climb starts at the police station: 5.3 km and 600 metres of ascent, with exposed sections, not advised for children.
