Trou d'Eau Douce and Île aux Cerfs: from the fishing village to the Anahita villas

Every morning, boats leave the village jetty one after another, heading for Île aux Cerfs. Trou d'Eau Douce, a fishing village on the east coast, runs to the rhythm of these crossings; five kilometres south, the Anahita estate at Beau Champ has the Four Seasons and an Ernie Els golf course.

Boats to Île aux Cerfs leave from the village's public jetty: the crossing takes about fifteen minutes, shuttles run regularly through the day and the last boat back is late afternoon. In high season the jetty is packed from 9am to 11am. Allow about an hour from the airport.

The independent guide to planning your trip to Reunion Island

We bring together more than 470 partner activities (helicopter, paragliding, hiking, diving, whale-watching cruises, airport transfers...), a wide catalogue of hotels and gîtes, and dozens of practical guides. An independent site run by someone passionate about Reunion Island.

Sooner or later, almost everyone here gets on a boat. Trou d'Eau Douce village keeps its jetty and its grey-sand beach; offshore, Île aux Cerfs draws visitors to its lagoon and golf course. To the south, Beau Champ already belongs to Grande Rivière Sud-Est, and that's where the Anahita estate lies.

Several hotels here run their own boats to the island, which makes a real difference to your day. The Shangri-La Le Touessrok, overlooking the bay with Îlot Mangénie kept for its guests, isn't on our list: we couldn't book it through our links on any date we tried. For the Palmar hotels further north, see our Belle Mare page.

Adults-only 3-star Superior hotel
Trou d'Eau Douce, 2 km from the village, facing Île aux Cerfs
8.5Very good79 reviews
Best for : a couple after peace and quiet, with Île aux Cerfs every morning

Two kilometres from the village, this Attitude boutique hotel, for over-18s only, looks across the lagoon to Île aux Cerfs. Around sixty sea-facing rooms and 11 villas surround a pool with a bar and the POZ spa. It's a certified B Corp and has done away with single-use plastic.

The draw is the free boat to Île aux Cerfs, leaving at 9am and 10am and coming back mid-afternoon. The hotel itself says you're better off crossing over for a swim. There are four restaurants, including Kot Nou for Mauritian food and Moonrise for lobster, and the group's All-in All-out deal lets you eat at eight Attitude hotels, transfers extra. Reviews single out the staff, the food and the quiet.

What stands out
  • Free boat to Île aux Cerfs
  • Adults only
  • Four restaurants, one Mauritian
  • Breakfast included at our last check

Worth knowing : There's no proper swimming beach in front: rocks, the reef and a strip of sand that vanishes at high tide, according to some reviews. Nothing within walking distance, and a few guests mention damp and tired plumbing.

Bubble Lodge Île aux Cerfs

Transparent bubbles on Île aux Cerfs
Île aux Cerfs, on the island, about ten minutes by boat from Pointe Maurice
9.0Exceptional109 reviews
Best for : one or two nights under the stars for a couple

It's the only place to stay on Île aux Cerfs itself, and there are just three bubbles, run by Sunlife. You're met at the private jetty at Pointe Maurice, then it's about ten minutes by boat to your bubble: a queen bed, air conditioning, a coffee machine, a private bathroom, an outdoor shower and a butler.

Dinner and breakfast are included, along with a welcome drink, a golf lesson or one green fee per person per night, and access to the golf course's private beach. The real treat starts after 5pm, once the day-trippers have gone: the island empties and you watch the stars from bed. Children are welcome, with a sofa bed for under-12s.

What stands out
  • The only stay on Île aux Cerfs
  • Dinner and breakfast included
  • Stargazing from your bed
  • Golf lesson or green fee included

Worth knowing : The bubble heats up in the afternoon, there are sea urchins in the water, and one or two nights is plenty. With only three bubbles, free dates are hard to find.

Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita

5-star Luxury resort, all villas
Beau Champ, Anahita estate, about 5 km south of the village
9.0Exceptional58 reviews
Best for : a big trip, a honeymoon or a family who want everything on site

Opened in 2008 on the Anahita estate at Beau Champ, the Four Seasons has 90 villas, a Royal Island Sanctuary and 45 rental villas and residences, all on a lagoon. Renovated in 2025, it has its own beach on Île aux Cerfs, with La Plaz Beach Grill, reached by free speedboats roughly every hour.

There are half a dozen restaurants, from Radici's Italian cooking to Awase's Japanese and Angara's Indian, plus a Rum Library, a twelve-room spa and two 18-hole courses a boat or buggy ride away. Children have the Hobbit Village, teenagers a club from age ten. Reviews praise the service, the island beach and the shallow lagoon.

What stands out
  • Private beach on Île aux Cerfs
  • Lagoon-side villas
  • Kids' and teens' clubs
  • Breakfast included at our last check

Worth knowing : Price comes first: €1304 a night at our last check, and meals on site are expensive. Snorkelling off the beach is poor, and the west coast is a long way off.

The Bay Club at Anahita

Suites and villas on the Anahita estate
Beau Champ, Anahita estate, about 5 km south of the village
8.7Superb120 reviews
Best for : golfers or a family who want space and a kitchen

Until December 2025 this was the Anahita Golf & Spa Resort. When it joined Sunlife, the group behind Sugar Beach and Long Beach, it became The Bay Club at Anahita. It shares the Beau Champ estate with the Four Seasons but is a separate hotel, with junior suites, Prestige suites and villas, one of them a Prestige villa with a butler.

There are four restaurants ( Origine, Signature, Il Forno and Bliss ), the GLOW spa and two golf courses: Anahita's, designed by Ernie Els, and the Bernhard Langer course on Île aux Cerfs, reached by boat. The resort promises two private beaches, including reserved access on Île aux Cerfs. It's a way to enjoy the estate in suites where you can cook.

What stands out
  • Roomy suites and villas
  • Ernie Els and Bernhard Langer courses
  • Private access to Île aux Cerfs
  • GLOW spa

Worth knowing : Our partner still sells it under its old name, Anahita Golf & Spa Resort, and only on some dates. Most of its reviews predate the name change. It calls itself a 5-star, but it isn't on the official rating list, so we show no stars.

A beach bar under a wooden pergola, with loungers and beanbags on the sand at Friday Attitude

Breakfast included

Friday Attitude

Family-friendly 3-star Superior hotel
Trou d'Eau Douce, 2 km from the village, next to Tropical Attitude
8.3Very good26 reviews
Best for : a family wanting a kids' club and a beach without breaking the bank

Next door to Tropical Attitude, two kilometres from the village, Friday Attitude is the group's family hotel: family rooms with a separate bedroom for the children, a free club for ages 3 to 12, beach volleyball and yoga. The sandy beach is close by, just across the road according to the hotel.

Two restaurants, a food truck, a tea bar, two bars, a pool and the POZ spa mean you needn't go far. For Île aux Cerfs, Tropical Attitude's boat runs twice a day, if you sign up. On other platforms, several hundred reviews mention the staff, the beach and how clean it is. Its postal address says Belle Mare, but the hotel is in Trou d'Eau Douce.

What stands out
  • Free kids' club, ages 3 to 12
  • Family rooms with a separate bedroom
  • Sandy beach close by
  • Boat to Île aux Cerfs

Worth knowing : Several reviews mention dated family rooms and temperamental plumbing. It only has 26 reviews with our partner so far, so its score still needs to settle.

Trou d'Eau Douce, coast road, in the heart of the village, by the sea
8.2Very good25 reviews
Best for : independent travellers who want to live at village pace

On the coast road in the heart of the village, this residence opened in 2012 and has thirteen units by the sea, with a private stretch of beach. Each has its own kitchen with a fridge and microwave, and a continental or English breakfast is on offer.

On two other platforms, more than 400 reviews averaging over 9 talk about the sea views, the location, daily housekeeping and a manager guests often mention by name. It's the place to shop in the village and catch the public boats to Île aux Cerfs, without being tied to a hotel.

What stands out
  • In the village, right by the sea
  • Equipped kitchen
  • Daily housekeeping
  • Private beach area

Worth knowing : Breakfast is basic, there's no pool that we could find and no hotel services. Few reviews with our partner ( 25 ), but a long track record elsewhere.

Practical tips

Making the most of Île aux Cerfs and around

Crossing to the island

From the public jetty, shuttles run back and forth all day and the crossing takes about fifteen minutes. Go early or late morning to dodge the 9am to 11am crush, and expect weekends to be busy. Water sports on the island cost extra. For a full day out, see our catamaran cruises.

The Île aux Cerfs lagoon, not the village one

The village beach is grey sand, sometimes with seaweed, and Tropical Attitude has no swimming beach. Île aux Cerfs, on the other hand, has a shallow lagoon, and that's where most people spend their time in the water.

Grande Rivière Sud-Est waterfall

Often described as Mauritius's longest river, the Grande Rivière Sud-Est has a waterfall you can get close to by boat from Trou d'Eau Douce. Trips often pair it with Île aux Cerfs on a day out of around six hours.

Two golf courses

The Anahita estate has its 18-hole course designed by Ernie Els; the Île aux Cerfs course, by Bernhard Langer, is a short boat ride away. Both are par 72, and several hotels on this list include a green fee or a lesson.

How this shortlist was put together
  • An Agoda guest score of at least 8 out of 10, based on real stays.
  • Enough reviews for the score to mean something ( usually 30 or more ).
  • Proper places to stay ( hotels, guesthouses, lodges ): private holiday-flat listings are left out.
  • Location checked on the map, in town or just outside it.
  • Scores and prices pulled automatically from Agoda's partner API and refreshed regularly.

The "Check prices" buttons lead to Agoda, a partner of this site: a booking may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. Hotels don't pay to be ranked.

FAQ

Staying in Trou d'Eau Douce and Île aux Cerfs: your questions

How do I get to Île aux Cerfs from my hotel?
Tropical Attitude has a free boat, leaving at 9am and 10am, and Friday Attitude guests can use it twice a day if they sign up. The Four Seasons runs a speedboat to its private island beach roughly every hour. Otherwise, shuttles leave from the village's public jetty.
Can you stay overnight on Île aux Cerfs?
Yes, in one of the three transparent bubbles at Bubble Lodge, the only place to stay on the island. Dinner and breakfast are included, and you're met at the Pointe Maurice jetty.
Why does The Bay Club show up under another name?
Because it was called Anahita Golf & Spa Resort until December 2025, when it joined the Sunlife group. Our partner still sells it under that name, and most of its reviews date from before the change.
Tropical Attitude or Friday Attitude?
They're next door to each other and belong to the same group. Tropical is adults-only and has no swimming beach; Friday is aimed at families, with a free kids' club and a sandy beach across the road.
Has the Four Seasons reopened after its works?
Yes: the resort was renovated in 2025, and the group announced the work was finished in December 2025.
How do I fit a night at Bubble Lodge into my trip?
The easiest way is to slot it in between two east-coast hotels: you're met at the Pointe Maurice jetty, it's about ten minutes by boat to your bubble, and dinner and breakfast are included. One or two nights is plenty, and with only three bubbles, book early.
Which hotels come with golf?
The Four Seasons and The Bay Club sit on the Anahita estate, with its Ernie Els course, and give access to the Île aux Cerfs course too. At Bubble Lodge, a lesson or one green fee per person per night is included.
Trou d'Eau Douce or Belle Mare?
Trou d'Eau Douce for Île aux Cerfs a boat ride away and a village feel. Belle Mare, ten to fifteen minutes north, for its long public beach and a wider choice of resorts. From Trou d'Eau Douce, allow about an hour to the airport or Port-Louis, and at least three quarters of an hour to Grand Baie or Mahébourg.
