Best hotels in Belle Mare and Palmar: 9 places on the east-coast lagoon

Almost ten kilometres of white sand and a shallow lagoon: Belle Mare beach draws the east coast's big hotels, from family resorts to adults-only boutique places. You won't leave your hotel much once you're here, so it pays to choose the right one. Our nine picks, all rated 8/10 or higher by Agoda guests, run from a 3-star all-inclusive to 5-star Luxury.

Allow about an hour from the airport ( 50-55 km ). The east is the windiest coast on the island: the trade winds blow hard from June to August, while October to May is calmer.

The independent guide to planning your trip to Reunion Island

We bring together more than 470 partner activities (helicopter, paragliding, hiking, diving, whale-watching cruises, airport transfers...), a wide catalogue of hotels and gîtes, and dozens of practical guides. An independent site run by someone passionate about Reunion Island.

Belle Mare runs along the east coast, from Poste de Flacq in the north to Palmar in the south. Its public beach, almost ten kilometres long, has showers, toilets and parking, and the shallow lagoon is sheltered by the reef a few hundred metres offshore.

The hotels line up along the same coast road over about five kilometres. In the evening, most of the action is inside the resorts: there are a few restaurants in the village and at Quatre Cocos, but you'll usually take a taxi, and Grand Baie is at least 45 minutes away.

Plenty of hotels here are aimed at adults: four of our nine don't take young children. Two big names aren't ranked: Constance Belle Mare Plage, which has too few Agoda reviews ( it's in our pick of 5-star hotels in Mauritius ), and Shangri-La Le Touessrok, which our partner doesn't sell.

Veranda Belle Mare

3-star all-inclusive hotel, 77 rooms
Belle Mare, on the seafront
8.8Superb50 reviews
Best for : a small all-inclusive with a budget you can fix in advance

Now called Veranda Belle Mare, the former Veranda Palmar Beach is a 77-room 3-star on the seafront, just south of LUX*. It's built around all-inclusive stays, so you know what you're spending before you fly.

What stands out
  • All-inclusive
  • 77 rooms, friendly feel
  • On Belle Mare beach
  • Spa

Worth knowing : Some wear and damp in places, seafood and some drinks are outside the package, and evenings are quiet. Check that the rate you book includes the all-inclusive package.

#6
Breakfast included

Ambre

Adults-only all-inclusive resort, 297 rooms
Belle Mare, on the beach
8.6Superb156 reviews
Best for : couples who want all-inclusive without children

A big 297-room Sunlife resort on the beach between Belle Mare and Palmar, with two simple rules: no kids ( 16 is the minimum age ) and no conferences. Everything revolves around the all-inclusive package.

There's an infinity pool, a Glow Spa ( extra charge ), a beach bar and three restaurants. Guests enjoy the beach and lagoon, the warm staff and what they see as a fair price for an adults-only all-inclusive. A good base if you mostly want sun, the lagoon and no bills to worry about.

What stands out
  • Adults only ( 16+ )
  • All-inclusive
  • On the beach
  • Infinity pool

Worth knowing : Rooms and bathrooms are dated, the buffets get repetitive on a long stay, birds visit the buffet and evenings are quiet.

There are three restaurants, two bars, a lounge, a spa and a heated infinity pool. Reviewers mention very attentive staff, the peace and quiet and good dinners. The hotel clears seaweed from the beach every day.

What stands out
  • Ages 12 and up
  • Heated infinity pool
  • Three restaurants and two bars
  • Peaceful

Worth knowing : Breakfast is seen as basic, green seaweed comes and goes, and there's nothing within walking distance, so budget for taxis.

What stands out
  • Free kids' club ( 2-11 ) and a teens' club

Practical tips

Before you book on the east coast

Don't forget the wind

The east coast takes the south-east trade winds head-on. From June to August they often blow at 20-40 km/h: cooler on the beach, choppier in the water, and great news for kitesurfing. October to May is calmer.

Seaweed

Depending on the wind, seaweed washes up on some beaches; reviews mention it at SALT, C Mauritius and Seasense. The hotels clean up every day, but it's worth knowing before you pay for a beachfront room.

Île aux Cerfs

It's a 15 to 20-minute boat ride from Trou d'Eau Douce, with shuttles roughly every half hour. Speedboat trips often combine the island with the GRSE waterfall, taking about six hours. See also our guides to catamaran cruises and day trips.

A trip to the market

For a break from the buffets, Flacq market, one of the biggest on the island, is close by: a good way to spend a morning away from the hotel.

How this shortlist was put together
  • An Agoda guest score of at least 8 out of 10, based on real stays.
  • Enough reviews for the score to mean something ( usually 30 or more ).
  • Proper places to stay ( hotels, guesthouses, lodges ): private holiday-flat listings are left out.
  • Location checked on the map, in town or just outside it.
  • Scores and prices pulled automatically from Agoda's partner API and refreshed regularly.

FAQ

Staying in Belle Mare and Palmar: your questions

What is the best hotel in Belle Mare?
It depends who's travelling. For top-end luxury, **LUX* Belle Mare, 5-star Luxury, renovated in 2023 and rated 9.2/10 on Agoda. For an adults-only design hotel, SALT of Palmar. With children, Long Beach or The Residence**.
Which Belle Mare hotels are adults-only?
Sunrise Attitude ( 18+ ), SALT of Palmar and Ambre ( 16+ ) and Seasense ( 12+ ). At LUX* and The Residence, some pools have adults-only areas.
How much does a hotel in Belle Mare cost?
There's a wide gap between the 3-star all-inclusive and the 5-star Luxury end: at our last check, Veranda Belle Mare showed €233 and The Residence €466 for two on a weeknight. Add the tourist tax of €3 per night for each guest aged 12 or over if it isn't included.
Can you swim at Belle Mare?
Yes: the lagoon is shallow and protected by the reef, and the public beach has showers and toilets. Seaweed turns up in places depending on the wind direction.
When is the best time to go to Belle Mare?
October and November have a reputation as the best months. If you can, avoid January to March, which is cyclone season. More in our guide on when to visit Mauritius.
Which Belle Mare hotels are all-inclusive?
C Mauritius, Ambre ( adults only ) and Veranda Belle Mare are all-inclusive hotels. LUX* and Sunrise Attitude offer it too.
Where should families stay in Belle Mare?
Long Beach ( free club for 2-11s, plus a teens' club ) and The Residence ( free club for 3-12s, open until 10 pm ) are the most family-focused. LUX* has a club too, and Veranda Belle Mare welcomes families on an all-inclusive basis.
How far is Belle Mare from the airport?
About an hour, 50-55 km. Booking a transfer or picking up a hire car at the airport saves hunting for a taxi when you land.
Is there golf near Belle Mare?
Yes: the Legend and the Links at Constance Belle Mare Plage ( free green fees for C Mauritius guests ), plus the Île aux Cerfs course ( Bernhard Langer, opened in 2003 ) and Anahita ( Ernie Els ) further south.
Is Belle Mare too windy?
From June to August the trade winds often blow at 20-40 km/h on the east coast: pleasant in the sun, less so for lazing on the sand. If wind worries you, aim for October to May, or look at the west ( Flic-en-Flac ) or the north ( Grand Baie ).
