Le Morne and Bel Ombre: the south-west's big resorts, from lagoon to Chamarel hills

Le Morne Brabant, a 556-metre UNESCO-listed monolith, closes off the west coast of Mauritius above a turquoise lagoon. Further east, the Bel Ombre estate stretches its beaches between golf courses and a nature reserve, while Chamarel and its coloured earths look down on the sea from the hills.

The independent guide to planning your trip to Reunion Island

We bring together more than 470 partner activities (helicopter, paragliding, hiking, diving, whale-watching cruises, airport transfers...), a wide catalogue of hotels and gîtes, and dozens of practical guides. An independent site run by someone passionate about Reunion Island.

The Le Morne peninsula gathers its resorts at the foot of the mountain, around Le Morne public beach, the safest place to swim in the area. Further east, Bel Ombre revolves around a former 2,500-hectare sugar estate with golf courses and a reserve, and Saint-Félix continues along the south coast. Above the fishing village of La Gaulette, the road climbs to Chamarel and its hills.

This coast is mostly big resorts, and several well-known names, such as the St. Regis, Paradis, Dinarobin and the two Riu hotels, aren't sold by our partner. We've picked seven of them, from the pool villas of Saint-Félix to the Chamarel chalets.

Tamassa is all-inclusive by design: 214 rooms, all facing the sea, set in three crescents around four pools. The Show buffet, Playa à la carte on the beach, a burger truck and several bars set the pace, and a nightclub-karaoke livens up some evenings.

Kids have the TamTam Club from 3 to 11 and teens the Studio 17 up to 17. Windsurfing, kayaking, sailing and the glass-bottom boat are included. Guests like the staff, the free activities and the buffet, and a night started at €167 at our last check.

What stands out
  • All-inclusive as standard
  • Kids' and teens' clubs
  • Every room faces the sea
  • Water sports included

Worth knowing : Currents near the reef sometimes rule out swimming and snorkelling, and some rooms are dated. It's a lively place, with no restaurants or shops within walking distance.

SO Sofitel Mauritius

5-star resort, 92 suites and villas
Bel Ombre, Beau Champ, Bel Ombre, on a private beach
8.2Very good68 reviews
Best for : a design-loving couple looking for peace and quiet

Architecture by Lek Bunnag and interiors by Kenzo Takada: SO Sofitel stands out for its style first. Its 92 suites and villas, including beach villas with private pools, line a white-sand beach facing the lagoon at Beau Champ.

The blade-shaped pool, heated in winter, and the SO SPA with hammams and hot and cold pools do the rest. Le Flamboyant serves French food by the pool, and Le Takamaka bar takes over in the evening. Reviews like the calm beach, the gardens and the sea-view rooms.

What stands out
  • Kenzo Takada design
  • Beach villas with pools
  • Spa with hammams
  • Calm beach

Worth knowing : Reviews are mixed: another platform rates it noticeably lower than Agoda, with complaints about service coordination, upkeep and meal prices. Nothing within walking distance.

Chalets Chamarel

Chalet hotel, around ten units
Chamarel, up in the hills above La Gaulette, 10 minutes from Le Morne
8.4Very good73 reviews
Best for : a couple who'd rather have the view and nature than a beach

Perched on the Chamarel ridge above La Gaulette, about ten chalets look over the west coast on one side and the forests on the other. The SeaForest restaurant faces the infinity pool, with themed evenings, and there's an outdoor fireplace to gather round.

Reviews mostly talk about the panoramic views, the nature and roomy chalets. It's the only hotel on our list without a beach, but also the closest to the Seven Coloured Earths and the Chamarel waterfall. At our last check, a night started at €283.

What stands out
  • Views over the west coast and forest
  • Infinity pool
  • Close to Chamarel
  • Total peace

Worth knowing : The access track is steep, so a high vehicle helps. No beach, meals that reviews call pricey, and a minimum age that varies between sources, so check before bringing teenagers.

Outrigger Mauritius Beach Resort

The Coral Kids Club takes 3 to 12-year-olds, and the snorkelling is good off the beach. The Plantation Club, in the old plantation house, serves Mauritian fine dining. Guests appreciate the staff, the setting and the free activities at the boathouse.

What stands out
  • Every room faces the sea
  • Kids' pool with slides
  • Snorkelling off the beach
  • All-inclusive option

Worth knowing : Its score sits right at our cut-off, and other platforms place it lower: buildings due a refresh, pricey meals and uneven room upkeep.

Practical tips

Lagoon, mountain and forests of the south-west

Swim at Le Morne rather than Bel Ombre

Le Morne public beach has a sheltered, gently shelving lagoon. At Bel Ombre and Saint-Félix, currents near the reef and the southern swell make swimming less predictable from June to September, with no lifeguards on the public beaches.

Climbing Le Morne Brabant

The trail is open from 7 am to 4 pm, with the last start at 2:30 pm. The first, easy section climbs to the plateau at 260 m; the second, with some scrambling, reaches the cross at 492 m, isn't advised for under-13s, and a guide is recommended. It closes in heavy rain, so check the day before.

Chamarel in half a day

The Seven Coloured Earths open from 8:30 am, with the nearly 100-metre Chamarel waterfall in the same park. The Chamarel rum distillery, which makes agricultural rum, is open to visitors too.

The Bel Ombre estate

Heritage Golf Club has 45 holes across Le Château and La Réserve Golf Links, and the 1,300-hectare Bel Ombre nature reserve is always visited with a guide, on foot, by 4x4, quad or buggy. Black River Gorges is 25 minutes away via Pétrin.

How this shortlist was put together
  • An Agoda guest score of at least 8 out of 10, based on real stays.
  • Enough reviews for the score to mean something ( usually 30 or more ).
  • Proper places to stay ( hotels, guesthouses, lodges ): private holiday-flat listings are left out.
  • Location checked on the map, in town or just outside it.
  • Scores and prices pulled automatically from Agoda's partner API and refreshed regularly.

FAQ

Staying in Le Morne and Bel Ombre: your questions

Should I stay at Le Morne or Bel Ombre?
Le Morne for the safest swimming beach in the area and for kitesurfing; Bel Ombre for golf, the reserve and family all-inclusives, accepting rougher seas in winter. They're about twenty minutes apart.
Why aren't the St. Regis, Paradis or Riu hotels listed?
Because our partner doesn't sell them, and we only rank hotels you can book through our links. The St. Regis Le Morne, Paradis and Dinarobin, the Riu Palace and Turquoise, and Heritage Le Telfair are still good options in the area, booked elsewhere.
Is LUX* Le Morne open all year?
No: it closes for renovation from 1 May to 31 October 2027 and reopens on 1 November 2027. When we checked, our partner only sold it from January 2027.
All-inclusive: what are the options in the south-west?
Tamassa includes it as standard, and Heritage Awali makes it its Premium plan, with golf depending on the season. **LUX* Le Morne and Outrigger** offer it as an option.
Where can I learn to kitesurf?
On Le Morne's flat, shallow lagoon, which has several schools, mainly from June to October when the trade winds blow. The One Eye wave, outside the lagoon, is strictly for very experienced kiters.
Is the airport transfer long?
Allow about 40 minutes to Shanti Maurice, 45 to 50 minutes to Bel Ombre and an hour to Le Morne, without traffic. Port-Louis is close to an hour's drive.
Can I bring children?
Yes, almost everywhere: kids' clubs start at four months at Shanti, from birth at Awali, and at three at LUX*, Tamassa and Outrigger. Only Chalets Chamarel is aimed more at adults.
What is there to do from La Gaulette?
Take a boat to Île aux Bénitiers, a flat islet a few hundred metres offshore, for a day of snorkelling and a picnic. La Gaulette is also where the kitesurfing schools are based, at the foot of Le Morne.
Can I swim with dolphins around here?
Trips mostly leave from the west coast, and the rules are strict: swimming with dolphins only from 6 to 9 am, no more than three people in the water, with a licensed operator, and never with whales. Details on our page about swimming with dolphins in Mauritius.
When is the best time to visit the south-west?
Winter, June to September, is cool and dry, with the best wind for kitesurfing but a southern swell at Bel Ombre. Summer, November to April, is hot and humid, with a cyclone risk mainly from January to March.
