Scuba Diving in Mauritius: where to dive, 2026 prices and reviews

12 bookable diving packages in Mauritius from €50 for exploration and €80 for a discovery dive, across 4 areas: Blue Bay in the south-east, Grand Baie in the north, Tamarin in the west and Belle Mare in the east. Manawa ratings and prices checked on the update date.

This site is first and foremost about Reunion Island, but when my readers compare Reunion Island and Mauritius before booking, diving almost always comes up. The Mauritian coral reef is larger and more accessible than Saint-Leu's, and discovery dives start €5-10 cheaper there. Here's what you can currently book in Mauritius, and a link back to the 5 discovery dives in Reunion Island for anyone who wants to compare package by package.

Mauritius is ringed by an almost continuous coral barrier that protects a turquoise lagoon 100km long and 1 to 4km wide. Diving is spread across 4 distinct areas: Blue Bay in the south-east (a marine park, the clearest water), Grand Baie / Trou aux Biches in the north (wrecks and drop-offs), Tamarin / Flic en Flac in the west (dense coral wildlife) and Belle Mare / Île aux Cerfs in the east (a sheltered lagoon, ideal for beginners).

My partner Manawa lists 12 bookable diving packages, from €50 for an exploration dive (certified divers) and €80 for a discovery dive. The most reviewed package so far is the Tamarin discovery dive with 5 out of 5 from 4 Manawa reviews, followed by the submarine excursion at Trou aux Biches (the same rating, a completely different experience). 2026 prices verified as of the update date below.

Discovery Dive, Tamarin Bay, MauritiusMost reviewed★ 5(4 reviews)

Discovery Dive, Tamarin Bay

The top-rated package with the most reviews (5/5 from 4 Manawa reviews). Tamarin has a high concentration of dive clubs and is exposed to plankton-rich currents, which explains the abundant marine life.

This is the Mauritius discovery-dive package that comes out on top on Manawa, with 5 out of 5 from 4 verified reviews. Tamarin Bay sits on Mauritius's west coast, in an area both protected by a coral barrier and fed by plankton-rich currents rounding the island's south-west tip. The result: dense wildlife (clownfish, parrotfish, occasionally green turtles) and good visibility from October to April.

Allow around 4 hours on site (including the boat trip), of which 20 to 30 minutes are spent underwater at a maximum depth of about 6 metres. The technical briefing happens on the boat or directly on the surface, and the instructor stays with the diver the whole time. No experience is required; being able to swim helps, but some clubs don't insist on it.

Who it's for: travellers who want to try diving at a well-known west-coast spot, more scenic than the south-east, from age 10 with adult supervision. Who it's not for: travellers prone to seasickness (water entry happens after a boat transfer), or those staying in the north (Grand Baie is more convenient for transfers).

Manawa price: €93 per person. Flexible weather cancellation. Included: full gear, supervision, boat transfer. To bring: swimsuit, towel, reef-safe sunscreen (oxybenzone and octinoxate filters are banned in several Mauritian marine reserves), a snack for after the session.

Blue Bay is one of Mauritius's 2 most strictly protected areas, a marine park since 1997. Visibility regularly exceeds 20 metres and the wildlife is noticeably denser than in the unprotected lagoons of the north. It's also the cheapest listing in my selection at €80 per person for a discovery dive, with a Manawa rating of 4 out of 5 from 3 verified reviews.

It lasts around 3 hours, of which 20 to 30 minutes are underwater, at a limited depth for beginners. Departure is from Blue Bay village, a 5-minute drive from SSR Airport (handy for fitting the dive in on your arrival or departure day). The briefing stresses the marine park rules: no touching, no gloves, reef-safe sunscreen compulsory.

Who it's for: travellers staying in the south-east (Mahébourg, Pointe d'Esny, Blue Bay), children from age 8 with a guardian, travellers who care about marine conservation. Who it's not for: underwater photographers who want to light up the wildlife (powerful lamps may be restricted in the marine park), travellers staying in the north (a 1.5-hour drive from Grand Baie).

Manawa price: €80 per person, the cheapest discovery dive in Mauritius in my selection. Flexible weather cancellation. For certified divers, the same team offers an exploration dive at €50 on this spot (see package 4).

Discovery Dive + 12m Exploration Dive at Grand Baie, Mauritius6m + 12m combo★ 5(3 reviews)

Discovery Dive + 12m Exploration Dive at Grand Baie

This is the only package in my selection that combines a discovery dive (a maximum of 6m, constant supervision) with a short exploration dive at 12 metres straight after. The instructor assesses the diver's comfort on the first descent and decides whether the second, deeper one, is possible. Manawa rating 5 out of 5 from 3 verified reviews.

It costs more than a classic discovery dive (€123 per person versus €80-93 for the others), but you dive for roughly twice as long and reach a Level 1 diver's depth without holding the certification. Departure is from Trou aux Biches, in the north-west, a 30-minute drive from Grand Baie or Port Louis.

Who it's for: travellers who've already done a discovery dive elsewhere and want to step up without enrolling in a full PADI course, teens aged 12 and up comfortable in the water, anyone who found a classic discovery dive too short. Who it's not for: younger children (the instructor may refuse the second descent), travellers who just want to try it out (book Blue Bay at €80 instead).

Manawa price: €123 per person. Flexible cancellation. The same team offers a standalone exploration dive at €96 for certified divers (package 6).

This is the cheapest option in my whole Mauritius diving selection on Manawa: €50 per person for a 1h30 to 2h exploration dive in the Blue Bay marine park. No reviews published yet (a recent listing), but the same club also runs the discovery dive rated 4 out of 5 on the same spot.

Access requires a recognised Level 1 diving certification: PADI Open Water Diver, French FFESSM Level 1, CMAS *, SSI Open Water, or equivalent. The club will ask for your logbook and certification card at the briefing. Depth is usually 12 to 18 metres depending on the site, with the group supervised by a certified instructor or guide.

Who it's for: certified divers travelling in Mauritius, travellers based in the south-east or in transit through the airport (Mahébourg is 10 minutes away), divers who want to maximise their number of dives during their stay without blowing the budget. Who it's not for: beginners with no certification (book the Blue Bay discovery dive at €80 or the Tamarin discovery dive at €93 instead), divers who haven't dived outside a pool in over a year (the €60 refresher dive on the same spot is more suitable).

Manawa price: €50 per person. Flexible weather cancellation. Same reef-safe sunscreen recommendations as the discovery dive on this marine park.

Submarine Excursion at Trou aux Biches

This isn't scuba diving, but it deserves its place in my selection: a genuine tourist submarine from Blue Safari Submarine descends to 30 or 35 metres with around ten passengers in a pressurised cabin. Manawa rating 5 out of 5 from 4 verified reviews, one of the best ratings in my Mauritius diving selection.

It lasts around 2 hours, of which 40 to 50 minutes are an actual descent over wrecks and drop-offs off Trou aux Biches. Each passenger has their own panoramic porthole, and an audio commentary plays in French during the descent. Departure is from Pointe aux Piments (north-west), a 20-minute drive from Grand Baie.

Who it's for: families with children too young for scuba diving (from age 6 on the submarine), travellers with a medical contraindication to diving (ENT issues, high blood pressure, asthma), travellers who are curious but claustrophobic (the cabin is bigger than a car, with natural light through the portholes). Who it's not for: travellers who genuinely want to dive (book the Tamarin discovery dive at €93 instead), travellers very prone to seasickness in an enclosed space.

Manawa price: €126 per person, pricier than most discovery dives but a completely different experience. Flexible weather cancellation. There's a compulsory safety briefing on the surface, and the whole outing takes 2h.

Exploration Dive at Grand Baie, Mauritius★ 5(1 reviews)

This package targets certified divers who want to see the drop-offs and wrecks of northern Mauritius, an area known for more technical dives than the Blue Bay lagoon. Manawa rating 5 out of 5 from 1 verified review (only one review so far, so more feedback is needed).

Allow around 4 hours: the boat leaves from Trou aux Biches for 2 exploration dives, with a surface interval between them. Depth is usually 18 to 25 metres depending on the site. The best-known sites in the north are La Cathédrale (an underwater arch), Holt's Rocks and the Stella Maru wreck (a former Japanese trawler deliberately sunk in 1987).

Who it's for: Level 1 and above divers travelling in Mauritius, travellers based in the north (Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, Mont Choisy), divers who want to see the historic wrecks. Who it's not for: uncertified beginners (book the €123 discovery + exploration combo on the same spot instead), divers who prefer dense coral sites (Blue Bay at €50 is a better fit).

Manawa price: €96 per person for 2 exploration dives (€48 a dive, in line with the Mauritian average). Flexible weather cancellation. A certification card and logbook must be shown at the briefing.

Choosing your spot

The 4 diving areas in Mauritius

Blue Bay (South-East)

A marine park since 1997, visibility regularly above 20m. The cheapest spot in my selection (exploration from €50, a discovery dive at €80) and the most tightly protected. Access from Mahébourg, 5 minutes from SSR Airport.

Ideal for
Staying in the south-east or in transit through the airport, children from age 8, conservation-minded travellers.

Grand Baie / Trou aux Biches (North)

The area with the highest density of dive clubs, drop-offs and wrecks including the Stella Maru (a Japanese trawler sunk in 1987). Certified exploration at €96, a discovery + 12m exploration combo at €123. A one-of-a-kind Blue Safari submarine excursion.

Ideal for
Staying in the north, Level 1 divers and above, wreck enthusiasts.

Tamarin / Flic en Flac (West)

A west coast exposed to plankton-rich currents, hence the wildlife. The Tamarin discovery dive comes out on top on Manawa with 5 out of 5 from 4 reviews. PADI Open Water and Advanced courses on the same spot.

Ideal for
Staying on the west coast, a first discovery dive, a full PADI course.

Belle Mare / Île aux Cerfs (East)

A sheltered east-coast lagoon, gradual depths. A discovery dive at €133, certified exploration at €65, a PADI Open Water course at €630. Few Manawa reviews so far.

Ideal for
Staying on the east coast, certified divers wanting plenty of dives, full PADI courses.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about diving in Mauritius

What does a dive cost in Mauritius in 2026?
A Mauritius discovery dive starts at €80 at Blue Bay (the south-east marine park, 4/5 from 3 Manawa reviews), €93 at Tamarin (west coast, 5/5 from 4 reviews) and €123 for the discovery + 12m exploration combo at Grand Baie. An exploration dive for certified divers starts at €50 at Blue Bay. Full PADI Open Water courses range from €530 (AOW Tamarin) to €630 (OW Belle Mare).
Where should you dive in Mauritius: Blue Bay, Grand Baie, Tamarin or Belle Mare?
Blue Bay: the south-east marine park, with the best visibility and lowest prices, ideal for beginners and children. Grand Baie / Trou aux Biches: wrecks and drop-offs in the north for certified divers. Tamarin / Flic en Flac: the west coast, with dense coral life and the best-rated discovery dive on Manawa (5/5 from 4 reviews). Belle Mare / Île aux Cerfs: the sheltered east-coast lagoon, with full PADI courses. Choose based on where you're staying to keep transfers short.
Do you need a certification to dive in Mauritius?
Not for discovery dives (€80 to €93 depending on the spot, with constant supervision down to 6m). You do for exploration dives (Level 1 PADI Open Water, FFESSM N1, CMAS *, SSI or equivalent to show at the briefing along with your logbook). The Blue Safari submarine excursion requires no certification (you stay in a pressurised cabin).
From what age can you do a discovery dive in Mauritius?
8 at Blue Bay, 10 for the Tamarin and Grand Baie discovery dives. For the Blue Safari Submarine, the minimum age drops to 6 (no scuba diving, so no pressure-related contraindications). Over 50, a medical certificate confirming no contraindication is recommended before booking, and some clubs ask for it at the briefing.
What's the best time of year to dive in Mauritius?
October to May for the best visibility (regularly 20 to 30m at Blue Bay) and a water temperature around 26-28°C. Avoid January-February (cyclone season, cancellations possible due to swell). June to September is workable but colder (water at 22-24°C, a thicker wetsuit recommended) and windier on the east and south coasts.
Do you need to know how to swim for a discovery dive in Mauritius?
Not on most listings (the instructor holds the diver's hand throughout the session), but being comfortable in the water greatly improves the experience. Tell the instructor at the briefing if you're not very confident, and they'll adjust the duration and depth. To move on to exploration diving or the PADI Open Water course, being able to swim 200m non-stop is compulsory.
What happens in bad weather?
Manawa's flexible cancellation policy gives you a free reschedule or refund in bad weather. Cancellations are decided the evening before or that morning depending on the weather window. Since the Mauritian lagoon is protected by the coral barrier, most days are fine for diving, but in heavy rain or swell (especially January-March) the crew cancels.
What sunscreen should you use?
Reef-safe sunscreen (mineral filters: zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) is strongly recommended, and compulsory in the Blue Bay marine park and the protected area of Trou aux Biches. The chemical filters oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene and homosalate are banned in several of Mauritius's marine zones. Your sunscreen may be checked before you set off, so pack the right one.
How far ahead should you book?
Outside season (May-June, September-November outside school holidays), 3 to 5 days is enough. In high season (December-January, July-August), plan for 1 to 2 weeks. The most reviewed packages, like the Tamarin discovery dive (4 reviews) or the Blue Safari submarine (4 reviews), fill up faster than others; if they're full, switch to Blue Bay (exploration at €50 or a discovery dive at €80, near-daily slots).
Diving in Mauritius or Reunion Island: what's the difference?
Mauritius has an almost continuous coral barrier over 100km, a calm lagoon, discovery dives from €80 that are easy for children, the Blue Bay marine park for visibility and slightly lower prices than Reunion Island. Reunion Island has a smaller coral barrier (mainly Saint-Leu), more varied underwater scenery (volcanic rock, wrecks, open-ocean species) and supervision always by French-qualified instructors (BEES1/BPJEPS). For a first family discovery dive, Mauritius is more convenient. For seabed diversity and French-standard supervision, Reunion Island (see my Reunion Island discovery-dive guide) is excellent.
