This site is first and foremost about Reunion Island, where the signature boat trip is humpback whale watching off Saint-Gilles from July to October (see my Reunion Island boat rental guide). Mauritius is a different experience: a flat lagoon sheltered by the coral reef, comfortable sailing even in a moderate wind, and affordable private charters with a skipper. Here are the 3 bookable options side by side.

Mauritius is ringed by a near-continuous coral reef that creates a flat, protected lagoon across most of the coastline. It's one of the most accessible destinations in the Indian Ocean for private boat rental with a skipper, with no licence requirement and no swell risk. The 3 bookable packages split across 2 areas: Black River (west coast, sunset at Le Morne) and Trou d'Eau Douce (east coast, Île aux Cerfs).

All 3 private packages can be booked through my partner Manawa, from €282.33 as a flat rate for the whole group (not per person). A skipper is always included, you can ask to stop and anchor wherever you like, and the route is adjusted to the weather. 2026 prices checked as of the update date below.

This is the classic private way to enjoy a sunset on the Mauritian west coast. The catamaran is chartered for your group alone (no other guests) and leaves from Black River in the south-west. The usual route heads up towards Tamarin Bay and passes off Le Morne Brabant as the sun sets behind the UNESCO-listed mountain.

The skipper takes care of all the sailing and anchoring, so you can simply sit back and enjoy the sunset. Capacity depends on the catamaran (generally 6 to 12 people at this price), so check when booking. It's rated 5 out of 5 on Manawa, but from just 1 verified review so far.

Who it's for: couples after a private romantic evening, marriage proposals, birthdays, small groups of friends or family of up to 8-10 people, and travellers staying on the west coast (Tamarin, Flic en Flac, Le Morne) who'd rather not cross to the east coast. Who it's not for: large groups (the speedboat or pontoon boat packages hold more people) and travellers staying in the east or north (it's a long drive to Black River).

Manawa price €282.33 for the private charter, roughly €30-50 per passenger for a group of 6 to 8. Flexible cancellation for bad weather. Check drinks and aperitifs with the operator, as most offer them as an extra. This package also appears on my catamaran cruise page.

Private Speedboat Excursion to Île aux Cerfs, MauritiusFast and private

Private Speedboat Excursion to Île aux Cerfs

A private speedboat for a half-day at Île aux Cerfs from Trou d'Eau Douce. A fast way to take in several spots (Île aux Cerfs, the Mahébourg lagoon) in a short time.

A private east-coast speedboat · Île aux Cerfs in a half-day

From
€412.74/person
Book via Manawa
See the full description

This package gives you a speedboat to yourselves from Trou d'Eau Douce, on the east coast. Its edge over the catamaran is speed: in a single half-day you can combine Île aux Cerfs, a stop at the GRSE waterfall and, if you wish, a run down to the Mahébourg lagoon in the south-east. No reviews have been published on Manawa for this package yet.

The flat rate of €412.74 generally covers 6 to 8 passengers depending on the boat, so €50-70 per person for a full group. The skipper does the driving and will stop several times for swimming or snorkelling if you ask.

Who it's for: groups of 4 to 8 who want to see as many spots as possible in a half-day, travellers staying on the east coast (Belle Mare, Trou d'Eau Douce, Palmar), and groups short on time. Who it's not for: couples who prefer a slower pace (the €282 sunset catamaran cruise suits them better) and anyone prone to seasickness (a speedboat is less stable than a catamaran or pontoon boat).

Manawa price €412.74 for the private charter. Flexible cancellation for bad weather. The route is agreed with the skipper on the morning, depending on your wishes and the weather.

Private Pontoon Boat Excursion to Île aux Cerfs, MauritiusGroup format

Private Pontoon Boat Excursion to Île aux Cerfs

A private pontoon boat (a catamaran with a fixed roof) on the eastern lagoon. Roomier and more comfortable than the speedboat, it's ideal for groups and families with children.

Duration
Half-day to full day depending on package
Level
Suitable for everyone, a relaxed format

A comfortable pontoon boat · Bench seating sheltered from the sun

From
€480.24/person
Book via Manawa
See the full description

A pontoon boat is quite different from a speedboat or sailing catamaran: it's a wide, flat-bottomed motor catamaran with a fixed roof that keeps passengers completely out of the sun. The deck has deep bench seating and plenty of open space in the middle. It suits families with children or groups who want a relaxed trip with nothing to handle. No reviews have been published on Manawa yet.

The flat rate of €480.24 covers 12-15 passengers depending on the boat, so €35-50 per person for a full group. It leaves from Trou d'Eau Douce, and the usual route takes in Île aux Cerfs, the GRSE waterfall and a loop of the eastern lagoon. The skipper will stop whenever you like for a swim, some snorkelling or a picnic lunch on one of the island's beaches.

Who it's for: families with children (plenty of space and a roof against the fierce tropical sun), large groups of 10-15 people, anyone after a long, lazy outing with stops on request, and people who burn easily (most of the deck is shaded). Who it's not for: couples looking for romance (the €282 sunset catamaran cruise suits them better) and groups in a hurry who want to see as many spots as possible (the €412 speedboat is the better pick).

Manawa price €480.24 for the private half-day charter. Flexible cancellation for bad weather. Meals and drinks are generally not included (check with the operator), but most listings allow you to bring a picnic on board.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about boat rental in Mauritius

How much does a private boat rental cost in Mauritius in 2026?
Private packages start at €282 for a sunset catamaran cruise in Black River, €412 for a speedboat to Île aux Cerfs from Trou d'Eau Douce, and €480 for a more spacious, comfortable pontoon boat. These are flat fees (not per person) for the whole group, so €35 to €70 per passenger depending on the package and group size. Every boat comes with a skipper: Manawa doesn't offer bareboat (skipper-free) rental in Mauritius.
Can you rent a boat without a skipper in Mauritius?
Not through Manawa at the moment: all 3 packages come with a professional skipper, which keeps things simple and means you don't need a boating licence. For bareboat rental (without a skipper), you'd generally need to go to a specialist local rental company and show a valid licence, which is outside the scope of my catalogue.
Which boat trip is best for a romantic sunset?
The private sunset catamaran cruise from Black River (€282, 5/5 from 1 review). It's the only one of the 3 packages designed for sunset, with a route that passes off Le Morne Brabant as the sun drops behind the mountain. Ideal for couples, marriage proposals and birthdays. Check drinks and aperitifs as an extra with the operator.
Which boat trip is best for a family with children?
The pontoon boat (€480) is a much better fit than the speedboat: a fixed roof against the tropical sun, deep bench seating, a flatter, more stable hull and room for 12-15 people. The speedboat (€412) is fast but has little shade and a bumpier ride. The sunset cruise (€282) usually runs too late for very young children.
Where can you go on a private boat trip in Mauritius?
From Trou d'Eau Douce (east coast): Île aux Cerfs, the GRSE waterfall, the eastern lagoon, and the Mahébourg lagoon as an extension on the speedboat. From Black River (west coast): Tamarin Bay, Le Morne at sunset and the western lagoon. To combine several spots in a day, the €412 speedboat is the most efficient option; to relax at 1 or 2 spots, the €480 pontoon boat is more comfortable.
What happens in bad weather?
Manawa offers flexible cancellation, with a free rebooking or refund if the weather turns. The most settled season for sailing runs from August to November (the dry southern winter, with moderate wind). Avoid January and February (cyclone season, frequent cancellations) and keep your dates flexible if you book between December and March. As the Mauritian lagoon is sheltered by the coral reef, trips often go ahead even on windier days, but the operator has the final say.
Boat rental in Mauritius or Reunion Island: what's the difference?
Mauritius offers a wide, flat lagoon sheltered by the coral reef, comfortable sailing even in a moderate wind, and private charters with a skipper from €282. Reunion Island has no continuous lagoon, so boats mostly head out to open sea off Saint-Gilles, where the water is often choppier. For a relaxed family cruise, Mauritius is the better choice; for whale and dolphin watching out at sea, Reunion Island is the place (see my Saint-Gilles boat guide).
