Rodrigues: guesthouses and home cooking on Mauritius's sister island

An hour and a half's flight from Mauritius, Rodrigues has no rated hotels and no luxury resorts. You stay with local families in small guesthouses where dinner is shared with your hosts, around a lagoon roughly twice the size of the island.

Apart from Air Austral's flight from Reunion Island, you get there via Mauritius, on a domestic flight of about an hour and a half, with several a day. On the island, buses stop around 6.30pm and run less on Sundays, so a car (driving on the left) or a scooter makes a big difference. Allow at least a week to do it justice.

The independent guide to planning your trip to Reunion Island

We bring together more than 470 partner activities (helicopter, paragliding, hiking, diving, whale-watching cruises, airport transfers...), a wide catalogue of hotels and gîtes, and dozens of practical guides. An independent site run by someone passionate about Reunion Island.

Rodrigues covers just 108 km², about 600 km east of Mauritius. Port Mathurin, the tiny capital, faces north; Saint François and its beaches take up the eastern tip; Graviers closes off the south-east at the end of the coastal path, and the highlands in the middle, around Montagne Bois Noir, keep their villages and rural way of life.

No establishment on the island appears on the official hotel rating list, so you won't see any stars on this page. The island's two big hotels, C Rodrigues Mourouk and Cotton Bay, fall short of our 8/10 threshold with our partner; instead we've picked established guesthouses, beach villas and Tekoma.

Or Saison

Guesthouse, three rooms
Mont Cabris, in the hills above Saint François, about 3 km from Anse Philibert
9.5Exceptional158 reviews
Best for : a couple who want a warm welcome and the quiet of the hills

On the Mont Cabris plateau above Saint François, Jessika and Lino welcome guests in a house with just three rooms, each with a private bathroom and a view of the sea or the garden. There's a shared, equipped kitchen, and a small beauty salon tucked into one corner of the house.

Breakfast with fresh fruit and the dinners, vegetarian on request, come up again and again in reviews, along with the feeling of staying with friends. The hosts also organise snorkelling trips. It has 158 reviews with our partner.

What stands out
  • Much-loved hosts
  • Home-cooked dinners, vegetarian on request
  • Quiet hillside setting
  • Snorkelling trips arranged

Worth knowing : No beach within walking distance: Anse Philibert is about three kilometres away, so you'll need a car or scooter. With three rooms, it books up fast.

Tekoma's grey-roofed Creole villas by the lagoon, a green hill behind
#2
Breakfast included

Tekoma Boutik Hotel

32-room boutique hotel with sea views
Anse Ally, on Anse Ally beach, near Saint François
8.7Superb23 reviews
Best for : a stay right on the water, with a pool and hotel service

Taken over by Constance in 2023, Tekoma is the only hotel on our list, and it's right on the water. Its 32 standalone rooms, built like small Creole villas, all have a terrace facing the sea, on Anse Ally beach between Fumier and Saint François. There's a pool, a beach bar and a dive centre.

The restaurant is named 1528, the year the island was discovered, and two bars, Kreek by the pool and the Gin Bar, round things off. The hotel desalinates its own water and has an endemic tree planted at the François Leguat reserve for every booking. On another platform, hundreds of reviews praise the staff, the beach and the roomy bedrooms.

What stands out
  • On the beach, every room faces the sea
  • Pool and beach bar
  • Dive centre
  • Breakfast included at our last check

Worth knowing : Price first: €413 a night at our last check. Reviews find the food doesn't live up to its presentation and restaurant service slow, and the very windy east coast can spoil the beach. Our partner sells it under its old name.

Chez Ronald Guest House

Family-run guesthouse, eight or nine rooms
Saint François, 5 minutes' walk from Saint François beach
9.0Exceptional42 reviews
Best for : tasting Rodriguan home cooking on half board, with the beach on foot

Opened in 2011 in Saint François, this family guesthouse is run by Arlette, her son Bruno and Ronald. There are eight or nine air-conditioned rooms, including family rooms for two adults and two children, plus a garden, a terrace and a shared kitchen, and Saint François beach is five minutes' walk away.

Breakfast is included, and half board is well worth it: the family cooks Rodriguan food, with a ti-punch shared at sunset. One guest says they never ate the same thing twice in seven days. Reviews also mention clean rooms and how close the beaches of Anse Philibert and Trou d'Argent are.

What stands out
  • Rodriguan home cooking
  • Saint François beach on foot
  • Family rooms
  • Breakfast included at our last check

Worth knowing : No pool and simple facilities: you come for the welcome and the food, not hotel comforts. Pets aren't allowed.

Bigarade sur Mer's white villas among the palms, facing the sea
#4
Breakfast included

Bigarade sur Mer

Beach villas with kitchens
Baladirou, Anse Bigarade, north coast, about 5 km from Port Mathurin
9.5Exceptional27 reviews
Best for : a self-sufficient family or couple who want the beach on the doorstep

At Anse Bigarade on the north coast, these villas open straight onto the beach, about five kilometres from Port Mathurin and its market. There are three layouts, Couple for two, Family for four and Duplex for six, each with a fully equipped kitchen.

Breakfast is served facing the sea, and a local chef can come and cook on request. The place runs on solar power and sorts its waste. Reviews, still few, praise the cleanliness, the location and the service. Note that the 'Grand Baie' in the address is Rodrigues's own, not the Mauritian resort.

What stands out
  • Direct beach access
  • Villas for up to six
  • Equipped kitchen
  • Breakfast included at our last check

Worth knowing : No restaurant or pool on site, and a car helps for getting around. It's new to the booking platforms, so reviews are still few ( 27 with our partner ).

View from a wooden balcony at La Plage Residence over the street and parking, the lagoon beyond
#5
Breakfast included

La Plage Residence

Five-room residence above a restaurant
Anse aux Anglais, opposite Anse aux Anglais beach, 10 minutes' walk from Port Mathurin
8.7Superb23 reviews
Best for : staying near Port Mathurin, with the beach across the road and dinner downstairs

Opened in October 2024 opposite Anse aux Anglais beach, this residence has five air-conditioned rooms above La Plage Resto Bar, a restaurant open since 2020 and listed by the tourist office. Each room has a fridge, minibar and safe, and some have a sea-view balcony.

Downstairs, the menu mixes Rodriguan dishes, seafood and Chinese food, with live music on Saturday nights. Port Mathurin, its Saturday market and its shops are about ten minutes away on foot, so this is the place to go car-free for your first few days.

What stands out
  • Anse aux Anglais beach opposite
  • Port Mathurin on foot
  • Restaurant downstairs
  • Breakfast included at our last check

Worth knowing : It's very new, so there's little track record. Several comments mention road noise.

The tiled veranda at Gîte Le Tropical with a table and chairs, greenery below
#6
Breakfast included

Gîte Le Tropical, chez Jeannette

Table d'hôtes guesthouse, eight rooms
Montagne Bois Noir, in the hills, in the middle of the island
9.4Exceptional48 reviews
Best for : living at highland pace and exploring the whole island

In the middle of the island at Montagne Bois Noir, Jeannette runs this table d'hôtes guesthouse, listed by the Rodrigues tourist office and the Petit Futé guide. Eight double rooms with bathrooms, spread across a villa, an apartment and separate rooms, look out to the lagoon or the hills.

Half board means generous local cooking, and the house offers massages, entertainment, trips around the island and out to the islets, and even vehicle hire. Reviews rate it good value next to the island's other tables d'hôtes, with a very friendly atmosphere.

What stands out
  • Generous home cooking
  • Listed by the tourist office
  • Lagoon or mountain views
  • Trips and vehicle hire

Worth knowing : Up in the hills, far from the beaches: without a car you depend on organised trips. Our partner only sells it on some dates.

White towels on a leaf-print bed runner at Villa Océan Gravier
#7
Breakfast included

Villa Océan Gravier

Beachside B&B
Graviers, Graviers coast road, direct beach access
9.5Exceptional26 reviews
Best for : a couple who want Graviers, the coastal path and a scooter on hand

On the Graviers coast road in the south-east, this recently renovated house has King rooms with sea or garden views, a shared lounge and a garden, with direct access to the beach. The same owners rent out scooters, handy on an island where the buses stop early.

Graviers is the start, or end, of the island's best-known coastal path, which runs via Trou d'Argent to Saint François. You can set off on foot in the morning and come back by taxi.

What stands out
  • Direct beach access
  • Start of the coastal path
  • Scooters for hire
  • Breakfast included at our last check

Worth knowing : There's not much written about it yet: reviews are recent and few ( 26 with our partner ). Port Mathurin is at least twenty minutes away.

Pick your coast, or the highlands

A giant tortoise on the grass at the François Leguat reserve, Rodrigues
François Leguat reserve
Giant tortoises roaming free
Practical tips

Tortoises, seabirds and the Saturday market

François Leguat reserve

At Anse Quitor, giant tortoises roam freely across this 20-hectare reserve, and the guided tour heads down into the Grande Caverne, fitted with walkways. Allow an hour and a half to two hours.

The Saint François to Graviers path

It's the island's best-known walk, and an easy one. Trou d'Argent, a beach you can only reach on foot, is about three quarters of an hour from Saint François; Graviers is two and a half hours or more, depending on how often you stop to swim.

Île aux Cocos

Four kilometres west of Rodrigues, this uninhabited islet is a nature reserve where noddies, sooty terns and white terns nest. You can only visit on a guided trip, and part of the island stays off-limits.

Port Mathurin market

On Saturday mornings the market sets up at the edge of town, near the bus station. It gets going at dawn and the best stalls sell out fast, so go early. The market hall is also open on other days, except Sunday.

FAQ

Staying in Rodrigues: your questions

How do I get to Rodrigues?
By plane from Mauritius, on a domestic flight of about an hour and a half, with several a day into Plaine Corail airport. Air Austral also flies from Reunion Island; check the airline's site for how often. There's a ferry too, but the crossing takes 36 to 48 hours depending on the weather.
Why don't any of these places have stars?
Because no establishment on Rodrigues is on the Tourism Authority's official rating list, and we never show the stars booking platforms claim. No stars says nothing about quality.
Do I need to hire a car?
It's a good idea: buses stop around 6.30pm and run less on Sundays, and most guesthouses are out of the way. A scooter is a good alternative, and Villa Océan Gravier rents them. You drive on the left, as in Mauritius.
How many nights should I plan?
At least a week, say the island's guides: between the flight, the coastal path, the François Leguat reserve, Île aux Cocos and the lagoon, three or four days fly by. Many travellers combine Rodrigues with a stay in Mauritius.
How does table d'hôtes work?
At guesthouses, half board is often the best choice: you eat home-cooked Rodriguan food with the family or at a shared table. That's the case at Chez Ronald and Le Tropical, and you can order dinners at Or Saison too.
Where can I swim without a car?
At Chez Ronald, Saint François beach is five minutes' walk away; at Tekoma, Bigarade sur Mer and Villa Océan Gravier, the beach is on your doorstep. From La Plage Residence, you just cross the road.
What about C Rodrigues Mourouk or Cotton Bay?
They're the island's two big hotels, but their scores with our partner are below our 8/10 threshold. Mourouk, formerly Mourouk Ebony, is at Anse Mourouk, where people go kitesurfing.
Can I go kitesurfing on Rodrigues?
Yes, at Anse Mourouk in the south-east: a big, shallow lagoon sheltered by the reef, with steady trade winds. Several schools are based there. For the spots on Mauritius, see our kitesurfing lessons.
Where should I stay in Mauritius before the Rodrigues flight?
Near the airport, in the south-east: our Blue Bay and Mahébourg picks are fifteen minutes from the terminal, including a transit hotel with a free shuttle.
When is the best time to go?
Rodrigues is warmer and drier than Mauritius, with steady south-easterly winds. The sea ranges from 22 to 24°C in the southern winter to 25 to 28°C in summer. For more on the island, see our Rodrigues guide.
