Grand Gaube and Cap Malheureux: the northern tip, facing the islets

At the island's northern tip, the shore breaks into coves and small bays facing the islets: Coin de Mire, Île Plate, Îlot Gabriel. Less than ten kilometres separate Cap Malheureux's red-roofed church from the fishing village of Grand Gaube, with Anse La Raie and Calodyne in between.

The shore changes from one bay to the next: at Bain Boeuf you cross the coast road to reach the beach; at Calodyne, seagrass and seasonal seaweed can get in the way of a swim; at Anse La Raie, the trade winds blow hard. At Grand Gaube, the lagoon is calm and very shallow.

The independent guide to planning your trip to Reunion Island

We bring together more than 470 partner activities (helicopter, paragliding, hiking, diving, whale-watching cruises, airport transfers...), a wide catalogue of hotels and gîtes, and dozens of practical guides. An independent site run by someone passionate about Reunion Island.

This corner of the island feels far from the bustle of Grand Baie, though it's only fifteen minutes away. Cap Malheureux is said to take its name from the British landing of 1810 that led to the capture of the island; Anse La Raie is a kitesurfing spot; Calodyne has a handful of hotels facing the north-east islets, and Grand Gaube is still a fishing village known for its wooden pirogues.

There's a lot of choice for such a small stretch: three adults-only hotels, two official 5-stars, family hotels with free kids' clubs and a simpler option at Bain Boeuf. For Pereybère and Grand Baie, a few minutes away, see our Grand Baie page.

Four restaurants share the evenings: contemporary Mauritian food at The Dining Room, sushi at XO, tapas at Peninsula and seafood at The Cove, with its huts for dinner for two. There's a Cinq Mondes spa on site. Reviews praise the welcome, the calm and the romantic setting.

What stands out
  • Adults only

#6

Lagoon Attitude

Adults-only 4-star hotel, 182 rooms
Anse La Raie, facing the Anse La Raie lagoon, 900 m from Paradise Cove
8.4Very good29 reviews
Best for : couples or friends after a lively all-inclusive and water sports

Facing one of the island's largest lagoons and the northern islets, Lagoon Attitude only takes over-18s. Its 182 rooms run from Couple rooms to suites with a hot tub, and the lagoon is the hotel's big theme: a Marine Discovery Centre, the floating Ekol'O centre and an underwater snorkelling trail.

Five restaurants, including Le Bénitier for the buffet, Lemongrass for Asian food and Coral for seafood, four bars and a Dine Around option from half board. Kayaks, paddleboards, windsurfers and the glass-bottom boat are free, and for kitesurfing, the Anse La Raie spots are next door. Reviews mention very attentive staff, often by name.

What stands out
  • Adults only
  • Snorkelling trail and marine centre
  • Five restaurants
  • Free water sports

Worth knowing : The northern tip catches the trade winds, which can spoil a beach day, and part of the shore is walled rather than sandy. Some bathrooms are worn, and it only has 29 reviews with our partner.

Practical tips

Islets, kites and old northern villages

The islets, from the jetty

Several hotels run their own trips: a catamaran from Zilwa's jetty, or a swim stop below Coin de Mire with Coin de Mire Attitude. You can't land on Coin de Mire, only sail past it; Île Plate can be visited by speedboat or catamaran, and Îlot Gabriel, a nature reserve, is good for snorkelling. See also our catamaran cruises.

The red-roofed church

Consecrated in 1938, Notre-Dame-Auxiliatrice in Cap Malheureux, white walls and a red roof by the lagoon, is the cape's emblem. Next to it are a small public beach and fishermen at work; for a proper beach day, Bain Boeuf and Pereybère are better bets.

Kitesurfing at Anse La Raie

The wind that sometimes spoils the beach is great news for kitesurfers: Anse La Raie is one of the north's kite spots, home to the Ion Club. Coin de Mire Attitude sends guests there, and Lagoon Attitude is in Anse La Raie too.

Grand Gaube, a village of pirogues

The village has two fishermen's landings and a public beach looking out to Coin de Mire. Grand Gaube is known for its wooden pirogues and regattas with colourful sails; check the date locally.

FAQ

Staying in Grand Gaube and Cap Malheureux: your questions

A trip without children: which hotels?
Three hotels take adults only: Paradise Cove, a 5-star, the livelier Lagoon Attitude, and Veranda Paul et Virginie, tucked away in Grand Gaube village. At LUX*, an adults-only area, The Banyan, takes up the tip of the peninsula.
Do I have to cross a road to reach the beach?
Only at Coin de Mire Attitude, which the coast road separates from Bain Boeuf public beach. The other hotels on this list sit right on the lagoon, with their own beach or cove.
Is Sea Diamond a 5-star?
It calls itself one, but it isn't on the Tourism Authority's official list, possibly because it's so new. That's why we show no stars for it.
Are the kids' clubs free?
At Attitude hotels, yes: Zilwa and Coin de Mire take 3 to 12-year-olds free of charge. LUX* has its PLAY club for ages 3 to 11 and Studio 17 for teenagers. Sea Diamond welcomes children but doesn't advertise a club.
Can I visit the northern islets?
Yes, by boat. You sail past Coin de Mire without landing, Île Plate can be visited by speedboat or catamaran, and Îlot Gabriel, a nature reserve, is good for snorkelling. Zilwa also runs boats to Gran Zil, five minutes away.
Which hotels offer all-inclusive?
Nearly all of them. The Attitude hotels ( Zilwa, Lagoon, Coin de Mire ) have their All In All Out deal, Veranda its All Add In and Paradise Cove a Premium All-Inclusive. At LUX*, all-inclusive leaves out INTI and the G&T 100 Club. Sea Diamond doesn't spell out its board options.
When is the best time to visit the north?
May to November is drier and cooler; January to March brings a real cyclone risk. At Anse La Raie the trade winds often blow hard, which is great for kitesurfing but less so for lounging on the beach.
What is there to see in Cap Malheureux?
Notre-Dame-Auxiliatrice church, consecrated in 1938, with its red roof by the lagoon, and the view of Coin de Mire. The cape is also tied to the British landing of 1810 that led to the capture of the island.
How far is Grand Gaube from Grand Baie and the airport?
Grand Baie is ten to fifteen minutes by road, Port-Louis at least half an hour. For the airport, allow about 1 hr 15 to 1 hr 30, depending on traffic around Port-Louis. To stay in the thick of things, see our Grand Baie page.
