Where to stay in Saint-Joseph: 6 guesthouses and villas in the wild south

Saint-Joseph doesn't have a single classified hotel. Instead you sleep in a former distillery in Vincendo, a Creole villa facing the ocean or a family house near the river, twenty minutes from Saint-Pierre. All six places we picked are rated at least 8/10 by Agoda guests.

The independent guide to planning your trip to Reunion Island

We bring together more than 470 partner activities (helicopter, paragliding, hiking, diving, whale-watching cruises, airport transfers...), a wide catalogue of hotels and gîtes, and dozens of practical guides. An independent site run by someone passionate about Reunion Island.

Shaped by the Rivière des Remparts and the Langevin river, Saint-Joseph is the south as it used to be: sugar cane and turmeric growers, fishermen, and a basalt coastline pounded by the swell. People come for the Manapany rock pool, the Langevin waterfalls, the Cap Jaune lookout in Vincendo, and as a base for the Route des Laves.

France's official register of classified accommodation lists no hotels at all in the town; the nearest, the Palm Hotel & Spa, is in Petite-Île. So our list is made up of owner-run guesthouses and holiday lets with a real name, an address and dozens, sometimes hundreds, of reviews. Anonymous listings with generic titles stay out, however well rated.

Location matters more than usual here, as the town stretches along the coast and climbs far up into the hills. Check below where each place is.

Where to stay

The right neighbourhood for your trip

Manapany and Vincendo are about ten kilometres apart along the coast, and Jean-Petit climbs above the town. The shortlist is spread across four areas.

Town centre and Les Jacques

The heart of town, with its shops and the Friday market. Les Jacques, east of the centre, is a mix of houses and gardens a few minutes from Langevin.

Manapany side

To the west, towards Manapany-les-Bains, its rock pool carved into the basalt and Sable Noir beach. La Cayenne is halfway between there and the centre.

Langevin

The river neighbourhood: roadside pools, picnic spots and, further up, Grand Galet waterfall. Ideal for families who like fresh water.

Jean-Petit and Vincendo

Two places off the beaten track. Jean-Petit looks down on the coast from 300 m up; Vincendo, to the east, is home to Cap Jaune and several characterful guesthouses.

By type of trip

Which hotel suits you in Saint-Joseph?

Couples

La Plantation for the ocean-view pool and dinners with the hosts, Les Grands Monts for the old stone buildings in Vincendo, Le Niaouli for a quiet studio in town.

Families and groups

L'insolite Manap'Tipik ( sleeps eight, heated pool, baby gear ) or La Kaz Langevin, in the river neighbourhood. Note that Le Niaouli doesn't take children, and according to Booking neither does La Plantation.

Tight budget

Le Niaouli ( €56 at our last check ) and La Case aux Sens ( €89 ), whose "Idylle" unit still comes with its own hot tub.

Swimming

There's no lagoon in Saint-Joseph, but there's the Manapany rock pool and the pools of the Langevin river. Manap'Tipik and La Kaz Langevin are the best placed.

Treat yourself

La Plantation, the top guesthouse on our list, or the Manap'Tipik villa with its heated pool and hot tub.

On a road trip

Saint-Joseph is a natural stop on a tour of the wild south. To move on each night without booking rooms, hiring a camper van is a real alternative.

Practical tips

Making the most of the wild south

Friday morning market

The wild south market runs every Friday from 6 am to noon on place François-Mitterrand. Look out for turmeric from Plaine des Grègues, known locally as "safran péi", alongside chou coco and finger limes from local growers.

Freshwater swimming

The Langevin river has a string of pools along its shady road, and further up, Grand Galet waterfall pours down a wide wall of rock. For a different way down the river, try tubing or canyoning on the Langevin.

The Route des Laves, 25 minutes away

Saint-Philippe is 25 minutes east, and the Grand Brûlé lava flows about thirty kilometres away. For a full day without driving, the wild south tour with a driver covers the main sites. For something more active, try quad biking in the Rivière des Remparts, starting from Saint-Joseph.

November's turmeric festival

Every November, "Safran en fête" fills Plaine des Grègues, up in the hills, with stalls, concerts, a trail race and a turmeric hike. And to see the southern cliffs from above, helicopter flights take off from Pierrefonds airport, half an hour away.

  • An Agoda guest score of at least 8 out of 10, based on real stays.

  • Proper places to stay ( hotels, guesthouses, lodges ): private holiday-flat listings are left out.
  • Location checked on the map, in town or just outside it.
  • Scores and prices pulled automatically from Agoda's partner API and refreshed regularly.

FAQ

Staying in Saint-Joseph: your questions

Are there any hotels in Saint-Joseph?
Not in the official sense: France's register of classified accommodation lists no hotels in the town. The nearest is the Palm Hotel & Spa, a 5-star in Petite-Île, covered in our Saint-Pierre guide. In Saint-Joseph itself, you stay in guesthouses or holiday lets.
What's the best place to stay in Saint-Joseph?
La Plantation, a guesthouse in Jean-Petit rated 9.4/10 from 166 Agoda reviews, for its ocean-facing pool and home-cooked dinners. For character, Les Grands Monts in Vincendo; for self-catering, the Le Niaouli studio ( 9.7/10 ).
Where can I stay in Saint-Joseph on a budget?
At our last check, the Le Niaouli studio was €56 a night and La Case aux Sens €89. For six or eight people, a whole house such as La Kaz Langevin or Manap'Tipik brings the cost per person down. Prices change with dates, and each listing links to the live rate.
Where can eight of us stay?
L'insolite Manap'Tipik, near Manapany ( three bedrooms, two bathrooms, heated pool ), or La Kaz Langevin ( three bedrooms plus two sofa beds ). Both have baby equipment ( the cot costs extra at Manap'Tipik ).
Where should I stay near the Manapany rock pool?
Manap'Tipik is in La Cayenne, between the town centre and Manapany-les-Bains. Right by the pool itself, Villas Manapany and the Le Malaya residence weren't bookable through our partner when we checked.
Can you swim in Saint-Joseph?
Yes, but not in a lagoon. The Manapany rock pool is built into the rocks, with no lifeguard. The Langevin river has freshwater pools along its road. In the open sea, the southern swell makes swimming dangerous.
Pierrefonds or Roland-Garros: which airport?
Pierrefonds, in Saint-Pierre, is only about thirty minutes away ( 29 km ). Roland-Garros, where most long-haul flights land, is about 105 km away, around 1 h 30 without traffic, so leave extra time at rush hour.
Why stay in Saint-Joseph rather than Saint-Pierre?
For peace and quiet and the wild south on your doorstep, away from the bustle of the seafront. Saint-Pierre is easier without a car and has a proper lagoon, and the two towns are only about twenty minutes apart.
Is the bus enough to get around from Saint-Joseph?
Only just. The Car Jaune S1 bus links Saint-Pierre to Saint-Benoît via Grand Brûlé and stops in Saint-Joseph, but the network was reorganised in December 2025, so check the timetable before relying on it. The places in Jean-Petit, Vincendo and Langevin all need a car.
Can I visit the volcano from Saint-Joseph?
Yes, but it makes for a long day: Pas de Bellecombe is about 66 km away, nearly 1 h 50 by road via Le Tampon and the Plaine des Cafres. For a sunrise start, it's better to spend a night up there.
