Saint-Philippe and Sainte-Rose: sleeping on either side of the lava flows

In the island's south-east, the RN2 cuts across the Grand Brûlé, the stretch of coast where Piton de la Fournaise sends its lava all the way to the ocean. You stay on one side or the other: in Saint-Philippe, between the Mare Longue forest and the Cap Méchant cliffs, or in Sainte-Rose, near the church the lava flowed around in 1977. Think farm inn, guesthouses and owner-run homes rather than hotels.

Saint-Philippe gets around 4,260 mm of rain a year. And the Route des Laves can be cut by an eruption, as it was in 2002, 2004, 2007 and March 2026, so check the state of the RN2 before crossing the Grand Brûlé.

The independent guide to planning your trip to Reunion Island

We bring together more than 470 partner activities (helicopter, paragliding, hiking, diving, whale-watching cruises, airport transfers...), a wide catalogue of hotels and gîtes, and dozens of practical guides. An independent site run by someone passionate about Reunion Island.

Saint-Philippe and Sainte-Rose sit at either end of the Grand Brûlé, the coastal part of the Enclos Fouqué caldera. About 32 km of the Route des Laves lies between them, a little over half an hour's drive past lava flows, lookouts and forest. Saint-Philippe has around 5,000 people, Sainte-Rose just over 6,500: you come here for the volcano, the wild coast and the quiet.

Neither town has a hotel sold by our partner: Les Embruns du Baril, Saint-Philippe's long-standing seafront hotel, is booked elsewhere. Our seven picks, three in Saint-Philippe and four in Sainte-Rose, are a farm inn, guesthouses and holiday lets, each rated 8/10 or higher by Agoda guests.

Where to stay

Either side of the Grand Brûlé

Bonne Espérance

Between Sainte-Rose village and the Rivière de l'Est, on the Saint-Benoît side: closer to Roland-Garros airport, further from the volcano.

By type of trip

Which hotel suits you in Saint-Philippe and Sainte-Rose?

Dan'n Tan Lontan, for over-16s only, with an infinity pool and hot tub, or La Pointe au Corail and its pool under the coconut palms.

Black lava rocks under the spray near Puits Arabe, white waves along the Saint-Philippe coast
Puits Arabe, Saint-Philippe
The 1986 lava flow added 25 hectares to the island
Practical tips

Before you cross the lava fields

Check the road first

During an eruption the RN2 can close across the Grand Brûlé: in 2007, lava buried it more than 60 m deep in places, and it took seven months to reopen. Without it, driving from Saint-Philippe to Roland-Garros takes about 2 h 10 via the west coast, against 1 h 35 via the east.

Book your dinner

The Anse des Cascades restaurant only serves lunch, and the one at Les Embruns du Baril closes on Sunday evenings and Mondays. For dinner, stay with hosts who cook, like Ti'planteur, or book a table during the day.

Mare Longue's forest and spices

Protected as a reserve since 1981, the Mare Longue forest is one of the last lowland primary forests in the Mascarene Islands, and its botanical trail is free to walk. Next door, the Jardin des parfums et des épices, started in 1989 by the Fontaine family, grows around 1,500 species, with guided tours at 10:30 am and 2:30 pm.

Swimming at Baril les Bains

On a coast pounded by the swell, the place to swim is the Baril les Bains sea pool, 700 m² reopened in December 2022 and lifeguarded during the day; hours change, so check the town's Facebook page. Cap Méchant is for the basalt cliffs and a picnic, not for swimming. For the volcano and its lava flows from above, there are helicopter flights.

How this shortlist was put together
  • An Agoda guest score of at least 8 out of 10, based on real stays.
  • Enough reviews for the score to mean something ( usually 30 or more ).
  • Proper places to stay ( hotels, guesthouses, lodges ): private holiday-flat listings are left out.
  • Location checked on the map, in town or just outside it.
  • Scores and prices pulled automatically from Agoda's partner API and refreshed regularly.

FAQ

Staying in Saint-Philippe and Sainte-Rose: your questions

Is it better to stay in Saint-Philippe or Sainte-Rose?
Saint-Philippe if you're flying into Pierrefonds and want Mare Longue, Cap Méchant and Puits Arabe; Sainte-Rose if you land at Roland-Garros and are after Notre-Dame-des-Laves and Anse des Cascades. A night on each side saves you driving the Route des Laves twice.
Where can I find a proper hotel in the wild south?
In Saint-Philippe, Les Embruns du Baril: 14 air-conditioned sea-facing rooms, a pool, a restaurant and breakfast on the terrace. Our partner doesn't sell it, nor the Coco Vanille guesthouse. Le Puits des Français ( rated 3 épis by Gîtes de France ) and Pinpin d'Amour still have too few Agoda reviews to make our list.
Where can I stay near Notre-Dame-des-Laves?
In Piton Sainte-Rose: Entre Terre & Mer is 900 m south of the church, LaKour Fleurie 1.2 km north and La Pointe au Corail about 2 km away. In April 1977, the lava stopped at the entrance to the nave, then flowed around the building and on to the sea.
Is breakfast included?
At our last check it was at Ti'planteur ( €88 ), LaKour Fleurie ( €70 ) and La Pointe au Corail ( €90 ). The bungalows and villas are self-catering: €65 for Ti Kaz Zépices and €153 for the villa that sleeps six.
Which airport should I fly into?
Roland-Garros for Sainte-Rose ( 52 km, about an hour without traffic ) and Pierrefonds for Saint-Philippe ( 45 km, just under an hour ). From Saint-Philippe, Roland-Garros is still doable via the Route des Laves, in about 1 h 35.
What is there to see in Sainte-Rose?
Notre-Dame-des-Laves and its Virgin with a Parasol statue, Anse des Cascades and the fishermen's path, the harbour and the Corbett monument, and the 1894 suspension bridge over the Rivière de l'Est, reopened to walkers in December 2023. More in our guide to things to do in Sainte-Rose.
When is the Vacoa festival?
Every August, for about ten days at Cap Méchant in Basse-Vallée, with free entry. It draws 80,000 to 100,000 visitors, so book early if your trip overlaps.
Is there anywhere wheelchair-accessible?
El Dorado, in Bonne Espérance ( Sainte-Rose ): ramps, wide doorways, an accessible shower room, and a hoist and medical beds on request. The Cana Suc estate, with Gîtes de France and Esprit Parc national labels, also lists wheelchair access and is booked directly.
Is there a beach in the wild south?
There's no lagoon here, and the swell pounds the coast. The Tremblet beach in Saint-Philippe was formed by the 2007 lava flow; for a swim, the lifeguarded Baril les Bains sea pool is the safer bet.
Is there a bus between Saint-Philippe and Sainte-Rose?
Yes: Car Jaune line S1 runs the length of the Route des Laves and stops on both sides, including at Coulée 1986 and Piton Sainte-Rose church. For the lookouts, lava tubes and forests, a car is still far easier.
