This is the most-reviewed lava tunnel tour you can book by the seat in Reunion Island, with 482 verified Viator reviews averaging 5 out of 5. It lasts about 3 hours and starts from the 2001 lava flow car park on the RN2 between Sainte-Rose and Saint-Philippe (one of the island's most striking roads for volcanic scenery).
It starts with a 15-minute walk over the ropy (pahoehoe) lava of the 2004 flow to the tunnel entrance. Once kitted out (helmet, head torch, gloves, knee pads), you move in single file through the network of tunnels that formed when the surface lava cooled while molten lava kept flowing underneath. The guides explain how they formed and point out the lava stalactites, stalagmites and layers of successive flows.
What makes the 2004 flow's tunnels different from others open to visitors (the 1998 flow, the Lichens tunnel at Pas de Bellecombe, etc.): they're recent and therefore well preserved, fairly easy to reach from the east coast, and have passages several hundred metres long with 2-4 metre ceilings, so you can walk upright most of the way. It's the most instructive way to understand how a lava tunnel works.
Viator price €70 per person. Suitable for children aged 7-8 and over who aren't afraid of the dark and can keep up with the group for 3 hours. You'll need closed shoes (no flip-flops: trainers at least, but walking boots are better for the rocky walk in), a light warm layer (it's only 18-20°C underground, even in the hot season) and long trousers to wear under the knee pads.
