Plaine des Cafres and Le Tampon: where to stay, from town to the volcano

The Le Tampon district climbs from under 300 metres to over 2,400. Staying at the 14th km or up on the Plaine des Cafres makes for two very different trips: mild slopes about fifteen minutes from Saint-Pierre outside rush hour on one side, cold nights and the volcano at the end of the road on the other. High or low, each of the nine addresses gets at least 8/10 from Agoda guests.

Above 1,300 m, nights are cool all year and frost can form even in the southern summer. From Bourg-Murat, the forest road reaches Pas de Bellecombe in about 45 minutes.

The independent guide to planning your trip to Reunion Island

We bring together more than 470 partner activities (helicopter, paragliding, hiking, diving, whale-watching cruises, airport transfers...), a wide catalogue of hotels and gîtes, and dozens of practical guides. An independent site run by someone passionate about Reunion Island.

The island's fourth-largest town, Le Tampon is laid out along the RN3 and its kilometre markers: locals say "the 14th km" or "the 23rd" as if naming a neighbourhood. Higher up, the Plaine des Cafres is all meadows and cattle between the Piton des Neiges and Piton de la Fournaise massifs, with an almost Alpine feel. Bourg-Murat, at the 27th km, is where the volcano road begins.

Hotels are thin on the ground: there's just one 3-star in the whole district, and the few simpler hotels are either not sold by our partner or score under 8/10. So our list leans on guesthouses and holiday lets, several of them labelled or officially rated: five up in the highlands and four on the slopes.

Practical tips

Planning your trip up the volcano

At Pas de Bellecombe before 8 am

The car park fills early and clouds roll in fast, so aim to arrive before 8 am. The forest road leaves Bourg-Murat, crosses the Plaine des Sables and ends at the lookout 23 km later. Our Piton de la Fournaise guide covers the trails, and helicopter flights from Pierrefonds show you the Enclos Fouqué from above.

Cité du Volcan for foggy days

This regional museum in Bourg-Murat tells the story of the island's volcanoes; allow about two hours. It's a good fallback when the afternoon fog, which is common, hides the view.

Street market and palm park

The open-air market runs every Saturday from 6 am to 1 pm on the esplanade Benjamin-Hoarau, with a flower market on the first Sunday of the month. In Trois-Mares, the Parc des Palmiers du monde is free and open every day. More ideas in our guide to things to do in Le Tampon.

Les Florilèges flower festival

Le Tampon's flower festival takes over the town for about ten days each October, with concerts, exhibitions and workshops in the parks and along rue Hubert Delisle.

FAQ

Staying in Plaine des Cafres and Le Tampon: your questions

Where should I stay to see sunrise at the volcano?
Up on the Plaine des Cafres: L'Instant d'Évasion, on chemin de la Grande Ferme, and Les Quatre Saisons are close to the forest road, which reaches Pas de Bellecombe in about 45 minutes from Bourg-Murat. Les Géraniums, at the 24th km, is also a good base.
What's the best hotel in Plaine des Cafres?
Les Géraniums, the district's only 3-star hotel, renovated in 2023 and rated 8.0/10 on Agoda. It's the only true hotel on our list. For guest scores, look instead at L'Instant d'Évasion ( 9.7/10 ) and Chalet de Notre Dame ( 9.8/10 ), or Heritage Ecolodge for a break for two.
Does it get cold at night in Plaine des Cafres?
Yes. July averages around 13 °C, and ground frost has been recorded in winter and even in the southern summer. Heritage Ecolodge, Les Quatre Saisons and L'Instant d'Évasion list heating; Les Géraniums has well-insulated rooms and extra blankets on request; at Chalet de Notre Dame, check when you book.
How much is a night near the volcano?
At our last check: €98 at Les Géraniums, €66 at Les Quatre Saisons and €177 at Heritage Ecolodge, where breakfast is included. Down on the slopes of Le Tampon, Cœur Créole was €51.
Should I stay in Le Tampon or Plaine des Cafres?
Le Tampon for a milder climate, shops and Saint-Pierre about fifteen minutes away outside rush hour, if the volcano is just one day trip among many. Plaine des Cafres if you want to set off for Pas de Bellecombe at dawn or hike to Grand Bassin.
Which place suits a family with children?
Les Quatre Saisons ( three family rooms, games, a farmyard, baby equipment ), La Villa Tortue for six, or the family rooms at Les Géraniums. La Résidence des Caféiers is adults only, and Heritage Ecolodge is designed for couples.
What about L'Écrin, Auberge du Volcan or Sud Hôtel?
L'Écrin, a 2-star 150 m from the Cité du Volcan, and Sud Hôtel, a 2-star in Le Tampon town, both score under 8/10 with Agoda guests, and L'Écrin's reviews mention ageing bungalows. Auberge du Volcan has a middling score on the tourist board site. Côté Volcan and Fleur de Vanille, two labelled guesthouses, still have too few Agoda reviews to make our list.
Which airport for Plaine des Cafres?
Pierrefonds, in Saint-Pierre: about 17 minutes from central Le Tampon and 36 from the Cité du Volcan. Roland-Garros is more than an hour away via the Plaines and Saint-Benoît: a route planner gives 1 h 06 from the Cité du Volcan without traffic, and Les Géraniums quotes 1 h 20.
Can I get to the volcano by bus?
The Car Jaune S2 bus, Saint-Pierre to Saint-Benoît via the Plaines, serves Le Tampon and Plaine des Cafres, but we found no service up to Pas de Bellecombe. Without a car, a tour with a driver is the way to go.
Can I visit Grand Bassin from Plaine des Cafres?
Yes: the Bois Court lookout, above the hamlet of Grand Bassin, is about ten minutes' drive from the Cité du Volcan. Chalet de Notre Dame puts the trailhead ten minutes away.
