Plaine-des-Palmistes: cool nights between Bélouve and Grand Étang

Plaine-des-Palmistes sits at about 1,000 metres on the Route des Plaines, in the gap between Piton des Neiges and Piton de la Fournaise. People stop here for the Bélouve forest and the Trou de Fer, the Biberon waterfall, or simply for a cool night's sleep after a day on the east coast.

The Route des Plaines, the only road across the island's interior, puts the town roughly halfway between Saint-Denis and Saint-Pierre, around fifty minutes from each. Even in summer, nights drop to 14 to 16 °C, so book somewhere heated.

The independent guide to planning your trip to Reunion Island

We bring together more than 470 partner activities (helicopter, paragliding, hiking, diving, whale-watching cruises, airport transfers...), a wide catalogue of hotels and gîtes, and dozens of practical guides. An independent site run by someone passionate about Reunion Island.

The town has nearly 7,000 people and climbs from 720 to over 2,400 metres. Around the town hall, the Domaine des Tourelles, a two-towered Creole house rebuilt in 1926-1927, and the Maison du Parc national form the heart of the village. Higher up, Petite Plaine and Bras des Calumets lead towards the Bébour forest.

Le Tuit-Tuit, opened in 2024, is the town's only 4-star hotel. The other officially classified hotel, La Ferme du Pommeau ( 2 stars ), falls short of our 8/10 bar with Agoda guests, which the guesthouses and heated homes below all clear.

Grand Étang, a still lake ringed by green cliffs under the clouds
Grand Étang, Saint-Benoît
On the road down to the east coast
Practical tips

Before you head up to the Plaine

Mornings are for the forest

With 4,302 mm of rain a year according to Météo-France averages, Plaine-des-Palmistes is the second-wettest spot on the island, after Bellecombe-Jacob. Start early: from the Bélouve gîte car park, the Trou de Fer takes about 2 h 30 there and back on an easy but muddy trail that often closes while the boardwalks are repaired. Check it's open the day before.

Biberon falls, from the viewpoint

The 250-metre falls take about an hour there and back. Closed after a fatal accident in 2014, the site reopened in 2019 with a viewing platform: don't go to the foot of the falls, where rocks come down.

The national park centre and the Tourelles

At the national park headquarters on rue de la République, the permanent exhibition is free, Tuesday to Saturday, 9 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 to 5 pm. Next door, the Domaine des Tourelles showcases Reunionese crafts. For more outings, see our guide to things to do in Plaine-des-Palmistes.

Wood fires and local cheese

The restaurant at La Ferme du Pommeau is open to non-residents, and Le Lodge in Petite Plaine cooks over a wood fire ( Sunday menu from 11 am to 5 pm, other days by reservation ). Look out for fromage des Plaines, the town's own cheese.

How this shortlist was put together
  • An Agoda guest score of at least 8 out of 10, based on real stays.
  • Enough reviews for the score to mean something ( usually 30 or more ).
  • Proper places to stay ( hotels, guesthouses, lodges ): private holiday-flat listings are left out.
  • Location checked on the map, in town or just outside it.
  • Scores and prices pulled automatically from Agoda's partner API and refreshed regularly.

The "Check prices" buttons lead to Agoda, a partner of this site: a booking may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. Hotels don't pay to be ranked.

FAQ

Staying in Plaine-des-Palmistes: your questions

Does Plaine-des-Palmistes have a proper hotel?
Two hotels here are officially classified: Le Tuit-Tuit, a 4-star opened in 2024, and La Ferme du Pommeau, a 19-room 2-star with a heated pool and restaurant. The latter scores under 8/10 with Agoda guests: its reviews praise the welcome and the food but find the hotel dated.
Do I need somewhere with heating?
Ideally, yes: even in summer, lows hover around 14 to 16 °C. Villa Camélias heats every room, L'Idolivier has a fireplace, and reviews of Les Capucines praise the heating. The Balsamines listing doesn't mention it, though guests describe warm rooms.
Can I stay inside the Bélouve forest?
The Bélouve gîte sits right in the forest, but it's in the Salazie district, about 45 minutes' drive from central Plaine-des-Palmistes. From our picks, you reach its car park, the start of the Trou de Fer trail, along the Bébour-Bélouve forest road.
How long is the drive from the airport?
Roland-Garros is 51 km away, about 50 minutes without traffic; Le Tuit-Tuit quotes 45 to 55 minutes.
How far is Pas de Bellecombe?
About 1 h 20 for 41 km, via Plaine des Cafres and the volcano forest road. It works as a day trip, but for sunrise at the crater, a night closer to the volcano saves you setting off in the middle of the night.
What is the Fête des Goyaviers?
The town's big festival, held between late May and June in honour of the strawberry guava and its small red fruit. Expect a Miss Goyavier contest, a producers' market and a funfair.
Where can families or groups stay?
L'Idolivier sleeps about twelve and Villa Camélias four. Le Voyageur welcomes children of all ages, with a free cot. Les Capucines is adults only.
How do I get there without a car?
The Car Jaune S2 line, Saint-Benoît to Saint-Pierre via the Plaines, has five stops in town and eight departures a day from Saint-Benoît, between 5:15 am and 6:20 pm. The ride from Saint-Benoît takes about 28 minutes. There's no bus to Bélouve or the Biberon falls, though.
Why are some guesthouses missing from the list?
Chez Béa ( rated 3 épis out of 5 by Gîtes de France ) and Sylvie's farm near the Biberon falls aren't sold by our partner, and Les Aubépines in Petite Plaine has too few reviews there so far; the tourist office has their contact details. Chez Marilou, also labelled, is sold there as a house with a hot tub rather than its guest rooms, so we chose not to rank it. We also left out rentals with no verifiable presence outside the booking platforms.
