This is the only Grand-Étang horse ride you can book online on the island's east coast, run by Ferme Équestre du Grand-Étang from Pont Payet on the RN3, the road to Plaine des Palmistes. The listing holds a 4.6 out of 5 rating from 61 verified Manawa reviews, with a guide (Rico, the most mentioned name in the feedback) who comes up regularly in positive comments for adapting to each rider's level.

The ride lasts a half-day, about 4 hours on site, and circles Grand-Étang, halfway between the east coast and Plaine des Palmistes. The setting is one of the island's least photographed: a mountain lake fringed with tree ferns, the misty peaks of the Salazie cirque behind, and light that shifts with the passing clouds. It's more immersive than a hike, since the horse lets you cover the full loop around the lake without tiring yourself out.

Who it's for: travellers with some riding experience (or complete first-timers, as the team adapts the pace), couples wanting a proper nature outing away from the seaside, and kids from age 12 who can sit on a horse for 4 hours without discomfort. Who it's not for: younger children (the farm also runs an orchard ride from age 6 at €30, booked directly, see below), and anyone nervous around horses who has never tried.

Manawa price: €70 per person for the half-day. Helmet provided; long trousers are mandatory (no shorts), with trainers or closed shoes with a heel and your own water bottle. Flexible cancellation. For the full-day package at €150 with lunch included (for riders comfortable at all 3 gaits), book directly on ferme-equestre.re or by phone with Ferme Équestre du Grand-Étang.

Riding stables (other areas)

Petite-Île, Saint-Pierre, Étang-Salé

Horse Riding at Maïdo

Saint-Paul, the Maïdo highlands

A few independent companies offer horse rides in the Saint-Paul highlands (the Maïdo forest), with no online booking currently available. A good option if you're staying in Saint-Gilles rather than on the east coast. See the West Tourist Office for contacts.

Good to know

What to know before booking

Where is Grand-Étang?

Grand-Étangis a mountain lake (530m) in the Saint-Benoît district, on the road to Plaine des Palmistes (RN3, Pont Payet). 1h15 from Saint-Denis, 1h30 from Saint-Pierre, 50 minutes from Saint-André. It's one of the island's only genuine natural lakes, fringed with tree ferns and the cliffs of the Salazie cirque.

There's parking at the farm. One thing to check first: a prefectural order dated 22 September 2026 has closed the Grand Étang bridle trail, so ask the farm which route it's riding while the closure lasts. Once that's confirmed, it's time to reserve a hire car.

Equipment and clothing

  • Long trousers mandatory (no shorts or skirts).
  • Closed trainers with a small heel (no flip-flops or sandals).
  • A riding helmet provided by the farm.
  • A light rain jacket: the east coast is more humid than the west, with frequent showers.
  • Your own water bottle, a cap or hat, sunglasses.

Season and weather

The dry season (May to November) brings the best conditions for the Grand-Étang ride, with clearer skies and crisper views. The rainy season (December to April) means frequent showers on the east coast and sometimes muddy paths, but lush vegetation and soft, low light after the rain. Leave 1-2 spare days in the wet season.

Combining it with the rest of the day

The half-day ride takes up the morning (departure usually around 9am). In the afternoon, you can follow up with the Trou de Fer / Bélouve forest hike(30 minutes' drive), a visit to Plaine des Palmistes, or the Biberon waterfall. On the east coast, it makes one of the best full-day itineraries: nature on horseback in the morning, primary forest and viewpoints in the afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about the Grand-Étang ride

What's the price of a horse ride at Grand-Étang in 2026?
Expect €70 per person for the half-day Grand-Étang ride (about 4 hours) via Manawa, accessible from age 12, with 4.6/5 from 61 reviews. The full day with lunch rises to €150 for riders comfortable at all 3 gaits. For younger kids, Ferme Équestre du Grand-Étang offers an orchard ride from age 6 at €30, to book directly on ferme-equestre.re.
From what age can you do the Grand-Étang ride?
12 minimum on the Manawa half-day package. For younger children, the same farm offers an orchard ride from age 6 at €30, which must be booked directly on ferme-equestre.re or by phone. Group lessons (pony, introduction) are also accessible to kids from age 4-5 depending on the package.
Do you need riding experience?
Not for the half-day Grand-Étang ride: the Manawa listing says it is 'accessible to all', and the team adapts the pace for beginners. For the full day at €150, you need to be comfortable at all 3 gaits (walk, trot, canter); it's not a package for a first outing. If you've never ridden before, go with the half-day and mention your level when booking.
What's the meeting point?
Ferme Équestre du Grand-Étang, RN3 Pont Payet, 97470 Saint-Benoît. It's on the road between Saint-Benoît and Plaine des Palmistes, about 1h15 from Saint-Denis and 1h30 from Saint-Pierre. Parking on site. Grand-Étang is a 5-minute drive from the farm; you walk up as a group to the lake where the horse ride begins.
What happens in bad weather?
The team adapts to the weather: heavy rain gets rescheduled to another slot or refunded if you're leaving the island. The east coast is wetter than the west, so leave 1-2 spare days in your schedule, especially during the rainy season (December to April). In the dry season, the farm runs rides almost every day. Manawa cancellation is flexible; if in doubt, contact the team directly the day before.
What should you wear?
Long trousers are mandatory (no shorts or skirts). Ideally wear closed trainers with a small heel, and bring a light rain jacket for the frequent showers on the east side, plus a cap or hat and sunglasses. A riding helmet is provided on site. Bring your own water bottle. For the full day, pack a change of clothes in a bag that stays at the farm during the ride.
How far in advance should you book?
Outside peak season (May-June, September-November excluding holidays), 3 to 5 days is enough. In high season (July-August, mainland France school holidays, the year-end holidays), plan 1 to 2 weeks ahead, especially for the full-day package, which fills up faster. Since Grand-Étang is a relatively under-the-radar spot, booking pressure stays more moderate than for whale watching or Cilaos canyoning.
Can it be combined with other activities on the same day?
Yes. On the same day, you can combine the half-day horse ride (morning) with the Trou de Fer / Bélouve forest hike in the afternoon (30 minutes' drive), or with a visit to Plaine des Palmistes and the Biberon waterfall. On the east coast, it makes one of the best full-day itineraries: nature on horseback in the morning, hiking in the afternoon.
Is Grand-Étang worth the detour?
Yes, if you love mountain scenery. Grand-Étang is one of the island's only genuine natural lakes, at 530m altitude, fringed with tree ferns and the cliffs of the Salazie cirque. It's less photographed than Maïdo or the volcano, quieter, and the horse ride lets you complete the full loop, which isn't feasible on a short hike.
