The Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with 1 to 3 eruptions a year on average. Its summit caldera, seen from Pas de Bellecombe, is one of the most spectacular landscapes in Reunion Island: a caldera 9km across, the famous Formica Léo crater and recent lava flows that are still warm in places.

There are 5 guided hikes to book with my partners Manawa and Viator: from €55 for the shorter hike and €60 for the classic (4.9/5 from 47 reviews), an off-trail hike at €60 for experienced hikers aged 14 and over, and two Viator options at €67 and €77 (the best rated, 5/5 from 69 reviews, led by a volcano specialist). 2026 prices checked.

This is the most-reviewed guided hike on Piton de la Fournaise, rated 4.9 out of 5 from 47 verified Manawa reviews. It starts at Pas de Bellecombe (reached by car on the forest road), a natural lookout over the volcano's caldera with the most spectacular view of the Dolomieu crater.

The classic route goes down into the caldera (the Enclos Fouqué) on the safe, waymarked path, crosses old lava flows and reaches the famous Formica Léo cone, then, depending on time and the group, carries on up to the Dolomieu crater itself. The guide explains the volcano's geology, the history of recent eruptions and the first plants colonising the new lava.

Who it's for: regular hikers aged 12 and over who are comfortable on mountain trails and dressed for altitude (it's 10-15°C cooler at the volcano than on the coast). Who it's not for: children under 12, people with limited mobility (there's a steep descent and a climb back up) and anyone with serious heart or breathing problems (it's above 2,200m).

Manawa price €60 per person. Flexible cancellation for bad weather. Bring sturdy walking boots (rocky, sloping ground), warm clothes (a windproof and fleece are essential, as fog and wind can catch you out), water and a snack, a cap or hat and sunscreen (the black lava reflects a lot of glare). Bring a head torch if you start early.

The cheaper alternative to the €60 classic hike: €55 per person, rated 5 out of 5 from 19 Manawa reviews. It's a shorter half-day hike focusing on the view from Pas de Bellecombe and the Formica Léo crater, and doesn't always go on to Dolomieu.

It's designed for anyone who wants to see the caldera without giving up a whole day: 3-4 hours of walking instead of 5-6, taking in the most impressive viewpoints (the caldera, the rim of Bory crater, Formica Léo). The guide sets a pace for occasional walkers, with more frequent stops to explain what you're seeing.

Who it's for: occasional walkers who want a real volcano hike without spending the whole day on it, travellers pairing the volcano with something else in the afternoon (the lava road, the lava tunnel, etc.) and families with children aged 12 and over. Who it's not for: experienced hikers set on reaching Dolomieu (the €60 full-day hike is better).

Manawa price €55 per person. Flexible cancellation for bad weather. Bring the same gear as for the classic hike: walking boots, warm clothes, water, a cap and high-factor sunscreen. The difference is the length and effort, not the quality of the guiding.

The most challenging volcano hike: a full day off-trail on Piton de la Fournaise's recent lava flows, €60 per person, rated 5 out of 5 from 4 Manawa reviews. It's only for experienced hikers aged 14 and over, with a guide who knows the volcanic terrain inside out.

The route leaves the waymarked paths to explore quieter areas: the 2007 and 2018 flows in the southern part of the caldera, fields of pahoehoe (ropy lava) and aa (jagged, blocky lava) and smaller cones off the usual route. A guide is essential, as it's hard to find your way without waymarks.

Who it's for: regular, experienced hikers (at least one mountain hike a month), volcano enthusiasts who want to see the recent flows and photographers after unusual angles. Who it's not for: occasional walkers (the €60 classic or €55 shorter hike are better) and children under 14.

Manawa price €60 per person. Flexible cancellation for bad weather. You need sturdier gear than on the classic hike: technical walking boots with a Vibram sole (lava shreds thin soles), long trousers (compulsory, as lava is abrasive), gloves if the guide asks for them, warm clothes and water (at least 1.5L per person).

This is the best-rated volcano hike on any platform, with 5/5 from 69 verified Viator reviews, more than any other. €77 per person for a full day's climb led by a recognised Piton de la Fournaise specialist.

You set off from Pas de Bellecombe, go down into the caldera, cross recent lava flows and climb to the Dolomieu crater, with in-depth stops on the geology, the volcano's eruption history, how lava flows form, the first plants to grow on them and other volcanic features. What makes it special is the operator's scientific background, which means the commentary goes well beyond the usual.

Who it's for: volcano enthusiasts who want real scientific insight, travellers who want the peace of mind of the best-rated tour (69 reviews at 5/5), and photographers who'd like a guide who can explain the landscape. Who it's not for: occasional walkers after a half-day and anyone looking for the lowest price (Manawa's €55 hike suits both better).

Viator price €77 per person. Cancellation under Viator's terms. Bring the same gear as for the other hikes: sturdy walking boots, warm clothes, water (1.5L minimum), a cap and high-factor sunscreen. The difference is the depth of the commentary, not the gear.

The classic Piton de la Fournaise hike, booked through Viator rather than Manawa, at €67 per person. It's rated 5 out of 5 from 33 verified Viator reviews, one of the most-reviewed volcano hikes on any platform.

The route is much like the Manawa classic hike: from Pas de Bellecombe down into the caldera to the Formica Léo crater, and sometimes on to Dolomieu depending on time and the group. Viator doesn't name the operator, as it works with several local operators.

Who it's for: travellers who already use Viator and prefer to stick with it, or as a backup if the Manawa hikes are full. Who it's not for: anyone who prefers a named operator with its own reviews (the Manawa classic hike, with 47 reviews for the same operator, is better).

Viator price €67 per person. Cancellation under Viator's terms, shown on the listing when you book. Bring the same gear as for the Manawa hikes: walking boots, warm clothes, water and a snack, a cap and high-factor sunscreen.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about the volcano hike

How much does a guided Piton de la Fournaise hike cost in 2026?
Expect €55 on Manawa for the shorter half-day hike (5/5 from 19 reviews), €60 for the Manawa classic (4.9/5 from 47 reviews, the most reviewed) or the off-trail route (5/5 from 4 reviews), €67 for the classic hike on Viator (5/5 from 33 reviews) and €77 for the Viator hike led by a volcano specialist (5/5 from 69 reviews, the best rated).
Do you need a guide for Piton de la Fournaise?
Not on the classic waymarked path from Pas de Bellecombe down to Formica Léo, which is open to all and free (take an IGN map). But a guide is recommended for safety (frequent fog at the top, rocky paths, altitude over 2,200m) and for what you'll learn (geology, the history of the eruptions). On the off-trail hikes, a guide is essential for finding your way.
What's the minimum age?
12 on the classic hikes (€55-67) and 14 on the off-trail hike (it's more technical and demanding). Younger children can walk the first few kilometres of the waymarked path from Pas de Bellecombe with their parents (a short out-and-back as far as Formica Léo).
What's the best season?
The dry season (May to November) brings clearer skies and sharper views over the caldera. In the rainy season (December to April), fog is common at the top, though the recent lava flows can look more striking. Whatever the season, go in the morning: set off before 8am to reach the top before the clouds build up and hide the view.
What gear and clothing do you need?
Sturdy walking boots with a grippy sole (rocky, sloping ground and sharp lava), warm clothes (a windproof and fleece are essential, as it's 10-15°C cooler at the volcano than on the coast), water (at least 1.5L per person), an energy snack, a cap or hat, high-factor sunscreen (the black lava reflects a lot of glare) and sunglasses. Bring a head torch if you set off before dawn.
What happens if the volcano is erupting?
The authorities close the volcano during eruptions, and all guided hikes are automatically cancelled, with free rebooking or a refund. Piton de la Fournaise erupts often (1-3 times a year on average), but eruptions are short (a few days to a few weeks). Check the situation when you book and leave yourself a 2-3 day margin.
What can you combine with a day at the volcano?
On the same day or trip: the lava tunnels of the 2004 flow (see my dedicated page), the whole lava road from Sainte-Rose to Saint-Philippe, and the views from Bourg-Murat (Plaine des Cafres). Do the volcano in the morning for the light and before the clouds build, and keep the afternoon for the lava flows and tunnels.
How far ahead should you book?
Outside peak season (May-June, September-November, excluding holidays), 5 to 7 days ahead is enough. In high season (July-August, French school holidays), book 1 to 2 weeks ahead. The Manawa hike with 47 reviews fills up fastest; if it's full, try the shorter Manawa hike or Viator.
