River tubing means floating down a river on a large individual inflatable tube, with a helmet and life jacket. It's more playful and less technical than canyoning (no rope abseiling), livelier than rafting (an individual tube, direct sensations on the current). In Reunion Island, tubing is done on the Langevin river, in the wild south at Saint-Joseph, through a spectacular black basalt canyon.

The only operator bookable online on the island is Bouée Péi, based at 146 Rue de la Passerelle in Saint-Joseph, sold through my partner Manawa from €60 per person. For a more technical descent with abseils and jumps, see my Langevin River Canyon page (4 packages from €55).

This is the only tubing listing bookable online in Reunion Island: €60 per person with Bouée Péi, a long-established operator in the wild south based in Saint-Joseph. The format runs 4 hours on site, including around 2 hours of active tubing, with the rest made up of the briefing, gearing up, the approach walk and the wrap-up. The meeting point is at the base, 146 Rue de la Passerelle in Saint-Joseph (access from the RN2, Langevin exit).

The scenery is exceptional: the Langevin river flows through a black basalt canyon between Saint-Joseph and Grand Galet, with pools, natural slides and calmer stretches. You descend on an inflatable Jobe tube (a professional tubing brand) with a white helmet and life jacket, guided by a state-certified instructor who leads the way and gives safety instructions before each technical section.

Who it's for: teens and adults (from age 13) after a fun water activity in the wild south, travellers who've already done the classic Langevin canyoning trip or the aqua-hike and want to try a more playful format without abseiling technique, groups of friends and families with sporty teens (the wetsuit, helmet and life jacket provide enough safety margin for the livelier sections). Who it's not for: under 13s (take the family-friendly Petit Galet canyoning trip on the same river instead, see my Langevin Canyon page), non-swimmers (being able to swim 50m minimum is a prerequisite checked at the briefing).

Manawa rate €60 per person. The listing is new on Manawa and has no reviews yet, but Bouée Péi is a well-known name that travellers search for directly. Included: an instructor, a neoprene wetsuit, a helmet, a life jacket, a Jobe tube and pump, a waterproof bag with a filtering water bottle. Flexible Manawa cancellation.

Good to know

Preparing for your tubing trip

  • Being able to swim 50m unaided minimum, checked at the briefing (the Langevin river has sections with strong currents).
  • Minimum age 13 at Bouée Péi; for kids aged 7-12, switch to the family-friendly Petit Galet canyoning trip (see my Langevin Canyon page).
  • Swimwear and a towel to bring; the wetsuit is provided.
  • Closed shoes that can get wet (water shoes or old trainers, no flip-flops or hiking boots).
  • SPF 50 water-resistant sunscreen, sunglasses for the sections in direct sun.
  • A waterproof bag is provided by the operator for your phone, keys and documents; no need for your own bag.

  • Finding the base: Bouée Péi is on Rue de la Passerelle in Saint-Joseph, off the RN2 at the Langevin exit. If you're driving down to the wild south for it, reserve a rental car.
  • Combine it with the Grand Galet waterfall or Grand'Anse beach the same day (right nearby in the wild south).

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about tubing

What is river tubing?
River tubing ("descente en bouée" in French) means floating down a river on a large individual inflatable tube made of thick plastic, such as a Jobe or similar, with a helmet and life jacket. It's different from rafting (which uses a shared inflatable boat for several people) and canyoning (which uses rope abseiling technique to get past waterfalls). Tubing favours the fun, playful side, with less technicality than canyoning, but still requires a minimum level of fitness for the technical sections and confidence in water.
What's the price of tubing in Reunion Island in 2026?
Expect €60 per person with Bouée Péi, the island's only tubing operator sold online (a Manawa listing with flexible cancellation). The rate includes all the gear (a neoprene wetsuit, helmet, life jacket, Jobe tube) and guiding by a state-certified instructor. It's cheaper than classic canyoning (€65-95 depending on the package), since the format is shorter and less technical. Ideal for a fun water activity in the wild south.
Is tubing suitable for kids?
No, the minimum age at Bouée Péi is 13. The Langevin river has technical sections with strong currents and deep pools that require a teen or adult level of fitness (being able to swim 50m unaided minimum, checked at the briefing). For kids aged 7-12, the family-friendly Petit Galet canyoning trip on the same river is a better fit (accessible from age 7, see my Langevin River Canyon page).
Tubing or canyoning: which should you choose?
Tubing (€60, 4 hours) is a fun descent on an individual tube with no abseiling, playful and accessible, ideal for fit teens and adults. Canyoning (€55-95 depending on the package, 4-6 hours) is a technical descent with rope abseils, jumps and natural slides, more physically and technically demanding, with a family package from age 7. Tubing suits a relaxed day out, while canyoning is a real sporting adventure. You can do both on different days during a stay.
What's the best season for tubing?
The dry season (May-November) is best, with an ideal river flow for tubing (neither too low nor in flood). In cyclone season (December-April), heavy rain can cause floods that make the river dangerous, and the operator reschedules the activity (Manawa's flexible cancellation policy applies, full refund if rescheduled). Water temperature runs 18-22°C depending on the season, and the wetsuit provided keeps you warm over the 2-hour descent.
What gear should you bring?
Swimwear, a towel, closed shoes that can get wet (water shoes or old trainers you don't mind soaking, no flip-flops or hiking boots). SPF 50 water-resistant sunscreen, sunglasses, a water bottle in the car for after. Everything else is provided: a neoprene wetsuit, helmet, life jacket, Jobe tube and pump, a waterproof bag with a filtering water bottle for fragile belongings (phone, keys, documents).
How long does the activity last?
Expect 4 hours on site: 30-45 minutes for check-in, gearing up and the safety briefing, 30 minutes walking to the entry point, 2 hours of active tubing on the river (the descent, the return, and technical sections with the instructor's guidance), 30 minutes to wrap up (getting out, returning the gear, an optional shower). The half-day format makes it easy to combine with other wild-south sights the same day (the Grand Galet waterfall, Grand'Anse beach nearby).
Do you need to book ahead?
Yes, it's strongly recommended. Capacity is limited to 6-8 tubers per session (one instructor per group), and the operator fills up in high season (July-August, French school holidays). Book 7-14 days ahead in high season, 2-3 days in low season. 2026 prices verified as of the update date. Flexible Manawa cancellation. In case of bad weather (a river flood, storms), the operator reschedules the trip with a full refund or credit.
