The end of the rainy season: still hot and humid, with the cyclone risk falling from mid-March.

March marks the end of summer in Mauritius. It is still hot (22-30°C, water at 28°C), but rainfall drops noticeably from 15 March and the cyclone risk gradually fades. The landscape is at its greenest after the January and February rains, and the Tamarin waterfalls are at their fullest. For a day away from the beach, hiring a car opens up the road through the Black River Gorges, lush after the summer rains.

12 March is a national holiday in Mauritius: Independence Day (1968). Expect military parades, flags in every town and fireworks in Port Louis. It's a good date to build a cultural trip around, with the rest of your stay in the second half of the month.

If you want warm water without the heaviest rain, March (especially the second half) is one of the best compromises. Hotel rates stay at low-season levels until the end of the month.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about Mauritius in March

What's the weather like in Mauritius in March?
Temperatures of 22-30°C, sea at 28°C and an average of 200mm of rain, mostly in the first half of the month (13 rainy days in total). The cyclone risk remains until mid-March, then drops quickly. The second half of March is generally more settled, as the island starts moving towards winter.
Are the Tamarin waterfalls more impressive in March?
Yes, March is one of the best months for canyoning at Tamarin's 7 Waterfalls (€66 for a taster, rated 5/5 from 116 Manawa reviews, the best-rated outdoor activity in Mauritius on the site). The flow peaks after the January and February rains, the pools are full and the Black River Gorges are at their lushest. Beware of flash floods after storms: guides keep a constant eye on the water level.
Are there any events not to miss in Mauritius in March?
Independence Day on 12 March (marking independence in 1968): military parades, national flags and fireworks in Port Louis. Maha Shivaratri can fall in early March depending on the lunar calendar (see the February page for more on this major Hindu festival). The Aapravasi Ghat international sea festival is sometimes held in March, depending on the year.
What are the best things to do in Mauritius in March?
Canyoning at Tamarin's 7 Waterfalls (€66-75, with the water at its peak), a hike through the Black River Gorges (€34-44, lush green scenery), diving at Blue Bay (€50-80, water at 28°C with good visibility) and swimming with dolphins (€53 with Dolswim). Avoid long helicopter flights in the first half of the month (risk of rain and wind).
Mauritius in March or April: which is better?
April is drier (130mm compared with 200mm in March) and already well into the shoulder season. March has warmer water (28°C compared with 27°C) and greener scenery. If you want settled, milder weather, choose April. If warm water and waterfalls in full flow matter more, March is still excellent (especially the second half).
Do hotel rates go up in March in Mauritius?
Not until the end of March or early April. March is still low season for European visitors (outside the French school holidays), with hotel rates similar to February. 5-star hotels (Anantara Iko, Constance Belle Mare, Long Beach, Hilton) cost €280 to €350 a night, and 3-star hotels in the north (Maison du Nord, Toparadis, Résidence Peramal) €65-90 a night for two.
