This site is first and foremost about Reunion Island, “the intense island”, where canyoning is a flagship discipline (Fleur Jaune in Cilaos, Trou Blanc in Salazie, Langevin in Saint-Joseph, see my Reunion Island canyoning guide). Mauritius has only one genuine bookable canyon (the 7 Cascades of Tamarin), but it's the best-rated outdoor activity in the whole Mauritius Manawa catalogue. There are 2 packages to choose from depending on your level.

The 7 Cascades of Tamarin canyon is the only bookable canyon in Mauritius, tucked into the south-west section of Black River Gorges National Park(6,754 hectares, the island's largest protected land area). The river drops in 7 successive falls over a few hundred metres of elevation, amid basalt rock polished by floods and dense tropical jungle.

There are 2 packages bookable via Manawa: an introduction at €66 (the most reviewed, 5/5 from 116 verified reviews) and a more committed version with long abseils and a zipline at €75 from Henrietta. The optimal season runs from March to May (stronger flow after the rains) and September to November (dry and sunny). 2026 prices verified as of the update date below.

This is the highest-rated canyoning package in Mauritius, 5 out of 5 from 116 Manawa reviews, the largest volume of verified feedback for any outdoor activity in my Mauritius line-up. The scenery is exceptional: the 7 Cascades of Tamarin, strung together in a steep gorge within Black River Gorges National Park, in the south-west of the island. The format alternates abseils down waterfalls, jumps into translucent natural pools, slides down polished basalt rock and swimming stretches between the falls.

Supervision is provided by certified canyon instructors, in small groups. Full gear is provided: a wetsuit, harness, helmet and canyoning shoes. No technical prerequisite beyond being able to swim and feeling comfortable in water. The briefing at the start of the session covers the basics of abseiling, jumping and sliding, and you then progress down the falls, with each obstacle explained in advance by the guide.

Who it's for: travellers who want the most complete outdoor activity in Mauritius (water, height, jumps, abseiling), groups of friends and sporty couples, teens from age 12 who are comfortable in water, travellers who've done canyoning elsewhere and want to compare it with the Mauritian scenery. Who it's not for: kids who are too young, anyone prone to vertigo on an abseil, non-swimmers, hikers who'd rather admire the falls from the trail (see my Mauritius hiking page instead).

Manawa rate €66.28 per person, the best value for thrills and supervision in my Mauritius selection. Flexible weather cancellation. Bring swimwear (the wetsuit goes on over it), a towel, tropical insect repellent for the forest sections and an energy snack. All technical gear is provided.

This package tackles the 7 Cascades of Tamarin canyon from the north, starting at the village of Henrietta, and offers a more committed format than the classic introduction (€66). The route includes longer abseils (up to 30 metres on the tallest falls), more exposed jumps and a zipline set up above a pool to reach the opposite bank. Manawa rating: 5 out of 5 from 1 verified review at this stage.

The format runs from a half-day to a full day depending on the option chosen and the group's level. The canyon briefing goes further than the introductory package: double-rope abseiling technique, jump position, zipline braking. This package suits participants who've already done canyoning elsewhere or who are very comfortable in water and at height.

Who it's for: canyoners with some prior experience who want a more technical format, travellers who've already done the €66 introduction and want to come back for a different route, teens from age 14 who are comfortable abseiling. Who it's not for: complete beginners (take the €66 package 8123 instead), younger kids, anyone who gets vertigo on long abseils.

Manawa rate €74.77 per person. Flexible weather cancellation. The optimal canyoning season runs from March to May (just after the rainy season, when the water flow is stronger) and from September to November (dry and sunny). January-February isn't recommended (cyclone risk and flash floods in the gorges).

The introductory package doesn't include transfers, and the zipline version starts from the village of Henrietta, on the northern side of the national park. If you're coming by road, find a hire car and check the exact meeting point on your booking: the listing for the zipline route warns of a bus stop about 1 km before the real meeting point, where other groups and guides often wait.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about canyoning in Mauritius

What's the price of a canyoning descent in Mauritius in 2026?
€66.28 for the introductory half-day package at the 7 Cascades of Tamarin (5/5 from 116 Manawa reviews, the best thrills for the price in my Mauritius selection). €75 for the more committed version from Henrietta with a zipline built into the route. That's around 30% cheaper than a guided canyoning trip in Reunion Island (Fleur Jaune in Cilaos starts around €90, see my Reunion Island canyoning guide).
Where can you go canyoning in Mauritius?
The only bookable canyon is the 7 Cascades of Tamarin, in the south-west section of Black River Gorges National Park (6,754 hectares). Access is from the south-west for the introductory package (€66) or from the north via Henrietta for the more committed version (€75). There's no other commercially open canyon in Mauritius, unlike Reunion Island, where around ten canyons are accessible.
Do you need a particular level for canyoning in Mauritius?
For the introduction (€66): being able to swim and feeling comfortable in water is enough. No technical skills are needed: the briefing at the start of the session covers the basics of abseiling, jumping and sliding. For the committed version (€75): some prior canyoning experience is recommended (longer abseils, more exposed jumps, a zipline). From age 12 for the introduction, 14 for the committed version.
What's the best time of year for canyoning in Mauritius?
March to May (just after the rainy season, stronger water flow, the falls at their best) or September to November (dry and sunny, perfect for jumps and slides). January-February isn't recommended: cyclone season brings flash floods to the Tamarin gorges that can make the canyon impassable overnight.
What happens if it rains?
Flexible Manawa cancellation, with a free reschedule or refund in case of sustained rain or flood risk. Guides constantly monitor the river's flow the day before departure. If in doubt, they reschedule or cancel. Never push on through a canyon with an abnormal water flow: it's one of the leading causes of canyoning accidents worldwide.
What about gear and safety?
Full technical gear is provided: a wetsuit, harness, helmet and canyoning shoes. Instructors are certified (an equivalent of the French BEES qualification or a recognised local certification). There's a compulsory safety briefing at the start of the session, with a demonstration of every technical move before the group tackles it. The guide-to-participant ratio is generally 1 to 6 or 1 to 8 depending on the package.
Canyoning in Mauritius or Reunion Island: which should you choose?
Mauritius has 1 open canyon (the 7 Cascades of Tamarin), with an introductory half-day package from €66 and French-speaking guides available. Reunion Island has around ten accessible canyons (Fleur Jaune in Cilaos, Trou Blanc in Salazie, Langevin in Saint-Joseph, Bras Rouge and more), with prices between €65 and €130 for half-day to full-day trips. For a first try on a modest budget, Mauritius makes a lot of sense. For canyon variety and technical commitment, Reunion Island (see my guides) remains the reference.
