October is the spring inter-season in Mauritius, when the climate starts shifting towards the southern summer. Temperatures are rising (18-27°C), the sea is warming up (24°C) and rainfall is still light (35mm over 4 days). With its balance of weather, crowds and prices, it's a favourite month for regular visitors to the island.

It's also one of the last months to spot humpback whales in Mauritius before they head back to the Southern Ocean in November. Spring is in bloom: bougainvillea flowers all over the island, mango trees start to fruit and it feels noticeably warmer after the southern winter. All that colour is a good excuse to swap the beach for a loop around the island by road: on Discover Cars you can compare rental companies across the island for your dates.

Divali (the Festival of Lights) usually falls in October, following the Hindu lunar calendar. It's one of the most visually striking cultural events of the year, with homes and streets lit by oil lamps and candles in every Hindu-majority area of the island (around 50% of the Mauritian population).

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about Mauritius in October

Is October a good month for Mauritius?
Yes, it's one of the 3 or 4 best months of the year. This spring inter-season brings rising temperatures (18-27°C), a warming sea (24°C), little rain (35mm over 4 days) and no cyclone risk. The humpback whale season is winding down and spring flowers are coming out. Hotel rates are lower than in the European summer holiday peak.
What's the weather like in Mauritius in October?
Very settled, and slowly turning towards summer. Expect 18-27°C, water at 24°C and around 35mm of rain over 4 days (often towards the end of the month). The trade wind gradually eases, which makes kitesurfing less demanding but lagoon sailing and catamaran cruises calmer. Skies are almost always clear around midday.
Can you still see whales in Mauritius in October?
Yes, but book early. The humpback whale season winds down between mid-October and early November in Mauritius, as mothers and calves start heading back to Antarctica for the southern summer. Morning trips in October still have decent sighting rates, though less reliable than in August and September. A Dolswim trip from Grande Rivière Noire costs €66 (5/5 from 38 Manawa reviews).
What is Divali in Mauritius?
Divali (the Festival of Lights) is one of the major Hindu festivals, celebrated in Mauritius by a large share of the population (around 50% are of Indian origin). Homes are decorated with oil lamps (diyas) and candles, and families and neighbours share traditional sweets. It's especially visible in the evening in the towns and villages of the centre and north. The date follows the lunar calendar (generally between late October and mid-November).
What are the best things to do in Mauritius in October?
Whale watching (the last window, €66 with Dolswim), diving at Blue Bay (€50 for an exploration dive, €80 for a first dive, with the water warming up), a day catamaran trip to Île aux Cerfs (€69-74 with a barbecue, in calm conditions), swimming with spinner dolphins (€53, resident all year) and a helicopter flight over the underwater waterfall (€1,350 shared, with the light still excellent in early October).
Are hotels expensive in Mauritius in October?
No. October is outside the European summer holiday peak, with rates close to spring levels. Expect €350 to €420 a night for 5-star resorts (versus €600-700 in August) and €70 to €100 a night for two in 3-star hotels in the north (Maison du Nord, Toparadis, Résidence Peramal). It's a good-value month before prices climb again for the Christmas high season.
