A trip to Mauritius in January: climate, activities and prices

Midsummer in the southern hemisphere: water at 28°C, but it's cyclone season, with frequent afternoon rain.

January is midsummer in Mauritius, which lies in the southern hemisphere. Daytime temperatures average 30°C, the lagoon is above 28°C and the vegetation is at its most colourful after the rains at the end of the year. The days are long, with sunset after 7pm.

The downside: January is one of the wettest months (220mm of rain on average) and, above all, one of the most exposed to cyclones. Showers tend to be short and heavy in the late afternoon, followed by sunny spells. Water activities carry on unless a class 3 cyclone warning or higher is issued, which can close the Blue Bay marine park and the helipads.

If you're after heat and warm water, January is still one of the best months, as long as you stay flexible (most Manawa activities offer flexible cancellation) and stay in the areas that get less heavy rain (the west and north rather than the south-east). Most car rental deals listed on Discover Cars can also be cancelled free of charge, so you can lock in a hire car once your flights are booked and still pull out if a cyclone warning moves your dates.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about Mauritius in January

Can you travel to Mauritius in January despite the rainy season?
Yes, if you don't mind a few afternoon showers. Rain usually falls between 2pm and 5pm, and the rest of the day is sunny. Morning activities (Blue Bay snorkelling at €24, dolphin watching at €53 from Rivière Noire) are rarely affected. Do keep an eye on cyclone warnings; all Manawa listings offer flexible cancellation.
What's the sea temperature in Mauritius in January?
The lagoon averages 28°C in January, the warmest of the year along with February and March. Perfect for snorkelling and diving: you won't need a thick wetsuit for a try dive at Blue Bay (from €80). Humpback whales aren't around in January (they arrive in July), but you can see spinner dolphins in Tamarin Bay all year.
What's the cyclone risk in Mauritius in January?
Statistically, January is the month with the highest cyclone risk in Mauritius, with a real chance of at least one class 2 or 3 warning. At class 3 or above, the Blue Bay marine park closes automatically, helicopter flights are suspended and boat trips are cancelled. Most Manawa operators offer a full refund if an official warning is issued.
What are the best things to do in Mauritius in January?
Diving at Blue Bay (20m visibility, water at 28°C, a try dive at €80 or an exploration dive at €50), watching or swimming with spinner dolphins from Grande Rivière Noire (€53 with Dolswim, 5/5 from 11 Manawa reviews), catamaran trips to Île aux Cerfs (€69-74 for a day with a barbecue) and snorkelling in the Blue Bay marine park (€24, the cheapest option). Avoid long hikes in the afternoon heat.
Are there any festivals or events in Mauritius in January?
Yes. The Tamil festival of Cavadee is held in early January (the date follows the lunar calendar), with colourful processions in towns across the north and centre. Chinese New Year (late January or early February) brings dragon parades to Port Louis and festive menus to Chinatown's restaurants. 1 January is a national holiday.
Are hotels expensive in Mauritius in January?
The first half of January is still high season for European visitors (the tail end of the Christmas holidays), so prices stay high. From 15 January, hotels drop by 20-30%. On a budget, aim for late January or February, accepting the risk of rain and cyclones. See the selection of affordable Mauritius hotels (from €65 a night for two).
