Saint-Benoît and Bras-Panon: a 5-star lodge and riverside guesthouses

Saint-Benoît lives by its rivers: the Marsouins runs down from the Bébour forest to the town, rafts bounce through its rapids, and the area is known for bichique fry and lychees. Above town lie Grand Étang and the Takamaka lookout; to the north, Bras-Panon and its vanilla farms. For the night, there are two very different options: the east's only 5-star hotel, high above Sainte-Anne, or guesthouses with pools.

Grand Étang, the island's largest stretch of water, is 20 minutes from town on the Route des Plaines. The walk around the lake is 7.8 km, about 2 hours, on a trail that's often muddy in the rainy season.

The independent guide to planning your trip to Reunion Island

We bring together more than 470 partner activities (helicopter, paragliding, hiking, diving, whale-watching cruises, airport transfers...), a wide catalogue of hotels and gîtes, and dozens of practical guides. An independent site run by someone passionate about Reunion Island.

The island's second-largest district by area, Saint-Benoît runs from the coast up into the national park, taking in the villages of Sainte-Anne and Saint-François on the road to Sainte-Rose. Bras-Panon, its neighbour to the north, is vanilla country and hosts a farm fair every May.

There's only one officially rated hotel in the whole district, the Diana Dea Lodge, and most of what our partner sells here is private rentals. So we've added three guesthouses in Bras-Panon, under ten minutes from Saint-Benoît, to bring together five places that are rated or listed by the tourist office.

Diana Dea Lodge & Spa

5-star hotel, 31 rooms and suites
Sainte-Anne, chemin Helvetia, around 600 m up, 28 minutes from Saint-Benoît town hall
8.4Very good20 reviews
Best for : a wellness stay far from it all, with ocean views

The east's only 5-star hotel is a 31-room lodge set around 600 metres above Sainte-Anne on a 150-hectare estate, a former hunting ground where deer still roam. It was rated 5-star at the end of 2025 and also has a few glamping tents.

There's a heated infinity pool, a spa with a sauna and hot tub, and a gym: this is a place to slow down. La Table du Diana does bistro dishes at lunch and fine dining in the evening. Reviews praise the peace, the view, the well-kept rooms, the spa and dinner.

What stands out
  • The east's only 5-star hotel
  • Heated infinity pool and spa
  • Ocean views from the hills
  • Breakfast included at our last check

Worth knowing : The access road is narrow and twisting, and the hotel offers to pick guests up by 4x4. The restaurant is pricey with a short lunch menu, and some rooms feel small for the money.

What stands out

Where to stay

From the Sainte-Anne hills to the Le Refuge orchards

Our picks stretch over some fifteen kilometres, from Le Refuge in Bras-Panon to the hills above Sainte-Anne, with central Saint-Benoît in between.

Saint-Benoît town

Beaulieu and Bras Canot, a few minutes from the centre, the covered market and the Route des Plaines.

The hills above Sainte-Anne

Around 600 metres up, above the village and its listed church: views, forest, and a narrow road to get there.

By Grand Étang

Kanopea Forest Lodge rents five treehouse cabins near the lake, for adults only. Our partner sells it but it has just one review there so far, so we haven't ranked it.

By type of trip

Which hotel suits you in Saint-Benoît and Bras-Panon?

Full comfort

Diana Dea Lodge, with its spa and heated infinity pool, 600 metres above the sea.

Practical tips

Rivers, lookouts and where to eat

Takamaka, at the end of the road

The D53 climbs via Bourbier and L'Abondance to the Takamaka lookout, over 800 metres up, facing the valley's cliffs and waterfalls. It's under 20 minutes from the town hall; go in the morning, before the clouds.

Bassin Bleu, on a dry day

There's no swimming beach on this coast, and sea swimming is banned within 300 metres outside protected zones. You swim at Bassin Bleu in Sainte-Anne, reachable without steps, but never after heavy rain, when the water rises very fast.

Sainte-Anne and Bethléem

Sainte-Anne's church, decorated in moulded cement between 1921 and 1946, is a listed historic monument. Further up the Rivière des Marsouins, Îlet Bethléem has a chapel and picnic spots. More ideas in our guide to things to do in Saint-Benoît.

Where to eat in the evening

In town, the Le Saint-Benoît restaurant above the covered market only opens for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays. The Diana Dea and Kanopea serve dinner; elsewhere, ask your hosts before heading out.

How this shortlist was put together
  • An Agoda guest score of at least 8 out of 10, based on real stays.
  • Enough reviews for the score to mean something ( usually 30 or more ).
  • Proper places to stay ( hotels, guesthouses, lodges ): private holiday-flat listings are left out.
  • Location checked on the map, in town or just outside it.
  • Scores and prices pulled automatically from Agoda's partner API and refreshed regularly.

The "Check prices" buttons lead to Agoda, a partner of this site: a booking may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. Hotels don't pay to be ranked.

FAQ

Staying in Saint-Benoît and Bras-Panon: your questions

How do I get to Diana Dea Lodge?
Via Sainte-Anne and chemin Helvetia: allow 28 minutes from Saint-Benoît town hall and 50 minutes from Roland-Garros without traffic. The last stretch is narrow and twisting, and the hotel offers to pick you up by 4x4 at the bottom.
Why pair Saint-Benoît with Bras-Panon?
Because Saint-Benoît has only two recognised places sold by our partner, Diana Dea Lodge and La Villa Mirabelle. The three Bras-Panon guesthouses we picked are 8 to 10 minutes from the town hall.
Can you swim at Bassin Bleu?
Yes, in fine weather: it's a freshwater pool with shelters and step-free access, five minutes from Sainte-Anne church. Stay away after heavy rain, when the ford can flood.
Can I stay right by Grand Étang?
Yes: Kanopea Forest Lodge ( five treehouse cabins, adults only, Clévacances label ) and La Porte du Grand Étang ( a farm guesthouse rated 3 épis out of 5 by Gîtes de France, with dinners cooked by Lilian and Sophie ). The first has a single review with our partner and the second isn't sold there, so neither is ranked.
Which place suits a large family?
L'Arbre à pain, which sleeps 2 to 16 across a house, a flat and rooms, with a pool. For a family of three, one room at La Villa Mirabelle is enough.
Where can I go without kids?
Les Baies Roses is adults-only, as is Kanopea at Grand Étang. Diana Dea Lodge takes families but is aimed mainly at couples, with its spa.
Is Saint-Benoît good for a first or last night?
It works: Roland-Garros is about 25 minutes away without traffic and Saint-Denis 33. From Diana Dea, allow 50 minutes.
Is Le Médinilla a hotel?
No, it's a five-room guesthouse, with 528 reviews on Agoda. It suits a small budget, but reviews say it needs updating, and Booking rates it noticeably lower than Agoda.
Should I expect rain?
Yes: under the trade winds, the district gets around 3,450 mm of rain a year over about a hundred days. The rivers and Bassin Bleu rise fast after a downpour, and clouds often cover the hills in the afternoon, so keep your mornings for Takamaka and Grand Étang, with a rainy-day plan such as Sainte-Anne church.
How far are Plaine-des-Palmistes and Sainte-Rose?
About 25 minutes either way: up the Route des Plaines to Plaine-des-Palmistes, or along the coast to Sainte-Rose and the Route des Laves.
