Saint-André: guesthouses between Tamil temples and the road to Salazie

Carved temple towers, chariot processions at Dipavali, vanilla vines and the chimney of the Bois-Rouge sugar mill: in Saint-André, Tamil culture and the island's sugar history are part of the street scene. The town is also the gateway to the Salazie cirque, and the airport is only twenty minutes or so away. When it comes to beds, it's family-run houses and Creole gardens rather than hotels.

Every November, Dipavali takes over the town for five days, with a chariot procession in the centre and a market at the Parc du Colosse. If your dates overlap, book early. For Salazie, Hell-Bourg is about 35 minutes away by road.

The independent guide to planning your trip to Reunion Island

We bring together more than 470 partner activities (helicopter, paragliding, hiking, diving, whale-watching cruises, airport transfers...), a wide catalogue of hotels and gîtes, and dozens of practical guides. An independent site run by someone passionate about Reunion Island.

With nearly 59,000 people, Saint-André is the largest town in the east. The centre and Secteur Rio stretch towards the sea and Champ-Borne, with its ruined church and seaside cemetery; Patelin and Cambuston line the coast; the hills climb towards the Salazie road. The Colosse temple, the Maison Valliamé and the Roulof vanilla plantation make an easy day out.

There's no officially rated hotel in town. Our six picks are guesthouses, a bungalow and a small residence, each with its own strong point, from a pool to a homemade breakfast.

Practical tips

Before the temples and the road to the cirque

Visiting a temple

The Colosse and Maryen Peroumal temples hold ceremonies regularly. Shoes come off at the door, dress modestly ( no shorts or vest tops ), and keep a low profile during services. More ideas in our guide to things to do in Saint-André.

Vanilla up close

The Vanille Roulof plantation, a family business on rue Deschanets, runs guided visits Monday to Saturday at 11 am and 2 pm, lasting about an hour. To compare growers, see the vanilla farm tour.

No swimming in the sea

Saint-André's coast takes the full swell and has no swimming beach; swimming is banned within 300 m of the shore outside protected zones. The seafront Parc du Colosse, a leisure park, has several restaurants.

The road to Salazie

Salazie village is about twenty minutes away and Hell-Bourg just over half an hour. Go in the morning, as the cirque often clouds over in the afternoon. To stay there, see our Salazie hotels.

FAQ

Staying in Saint-André: your questions

Why only guesthouses in Saint-André?
Because the town has no officially rated hotel, according to the Atout France register. You stay in guesthouses such as Le Domaine des Oiseaux or Mon ti Kaz Mon ti Bonheur, or in a furnished flat at Le Carillon. The east's only 5-star hotel, Diana Dea Lodge, is in Sainte-Anne, about forty minutes away.
Which place is best for a first stay?
Le Domaine des Oiseaux for peace and quiet and its breakfast, rated 9.1/10 on Agoda. For a pool, Mon ti Kaz Mon ti Bonheur ( 9.6/10 ); to cook and walk everywhere, Le Carillon.
Where can I swim when staying in Saint-André?
In a pool rather than the sea: the swell pounds the coast and swimming is banned within 300 m outside protected zones. Several of our picks have a pool: Mon ti Kaz, Villa Mary and Fleur de passion.
Is Saint-André a good base for Salazie?
For a day trip, yes: Salazie village is about twenty minutes away and Hell-Bourg around 35. To see the cirque early in the morning, it's better to stay there, in Hell-Bourg or Grand Îlet.
Is Saint-André handy for an early flight?
Yes: Roland-Garros is 21 km away, about 20 minutes without traffic. The RN2 between Saint-Denis and Saint-André is often busy at rush hour, so leave a margin for a morning flight.
Which place suits a baby or young children?
Villa Mary, for its pool with a paddling area and its family room, or La Kaz du Beau Pays, free for under-12s in an existing bed, with a cot and high chair. Le Carillon works too, with its flats and kitchens.
Which places serve breakfast?
Le Domaine des Oiseaux, famous for its own, included or not depending on the rate. La Kaz du Beau Pays serves breakfast on site, so check what your rate covers. Le Carillon, Villa Mary and Fleur de passion don't include it.
Where can I eat in the evening?
The seafront Parc du Colosse has several restaurants, from Ô Bistrot du Colosse to Davy Pizza. At Fleur de passion and Villa Mary, some guests have shared a meal cooked by the hosts, so ask when you arrive.
What about the labelled guesthouses?
The two labelled guesthouses listed by the East tourist office, Le Bel Ombre ( Clévacances, 3 keys, in Cambuston ) and Auberge Le Désert ( Gîtes de France, 2 épis out of 5, up in Bras des Chevrettes ), aren't sold by our partner. Their pages on the tourist office website give prices and contact details.
