Rain in Reunion Island isn't a dealbreaker: showers are often short and localised, and the island has plenty of indoor activities to fill any day. With strong microclimates between the west and east coasts, a 30-minute drive can often get you back into the sun, as long as you have wheels: by van (see below) or by car. If it's a car, line up a rental car for the whole trip rather than hunting for one the day the clouds roll in. The worst-case scenario remains a cyclone, which is rare and flagged by Météo France 48 to 72 hours ahead.
Understanding the weather
Which rain scenario?
Four typical cases. Identifying yours helps you pick the right strategy: make the most of a dry morning, switch to indoor plans, or simply stay put and relax.
The sky clouds over in the afternoon
A classic west coast pattern between November and April: a clear morning, clouds building from 11am, showers between 2pm and 5pm. Schedule outdoor activities for the morning (beach, snorkelling, paddleboarding) and indoor outings for the afternoon. That way you still get a full day despite the weather.
Rain all day long
Less common, this happens during a tropical depression or when a cyclone passes well clear of the island. Stella Matutina, Cité du Volcan and a Creole cooking workshop are the best options. The marina shops in Saint-Gilles stay open all day for souvenir shopping.
Rain in the highlands, sun on the coast
Microclimates play a big role in Reunion Island. If Cilaos is fogged in, Saint-Pierre is often sunny just 25 minutes down the road. Conversely, if the west is rainy, the south around Saint-Pierre can stay dry. Call ahead to check with venues before driving out, to avoid a wasted trip.
Cyclone or red alert
A red alert or cyclone warning means everyone must stay indoors and roads are closed. Stay at your hotel or accommodation, follow Météo France Réunion, and wait for the alert to lift. Venues reopen in the day following the alert, depending on any damage.

Stella Matutina Museum
A former sugar mill turned industrial museum, one of the most accomplished on the island. The history of sugar cane, immersive staging, period machinery, temporary exhibitions on the French overseas territories. Family-friendly, with a self-guided route and an optional guided tour.
The go-to museum on Piton de la Fournaise and volcanology worldwide. An immersive 4D room, an interactive model, hands-on experiences, films on recent eruptions. The perfect fallback for a volcano day cancelled due to rain.
A care and release centre for marine turtles, a former turtle farm turned scientific observatory. Multi-level viewing pools, science educators on hand, an exhibition on the world's seven species of marine turtle. Green turtles and hawksbill turtles live in the lagoon just outside.
A municipal aquarium at Saint-Gilles marina, showcasing Reunion Island's reef wildlife: clownfish, grouper, green turtles, reef sharks. A compact format, ideal for a mixed day with another indoor activity in the same west coast area. Kids' activities during school holidays.
The Isautier distillery museum, the third-oldest rum distillery still operating in France. The history of sugar cane in Reunion Island, the production process, a tasting included for adults. An on-site shop for bringing home flavoured and aged rums.

Villèle Historical Museum

Escape Game
Several themed rooms with puzzles to solve as a team (2 to 6 players). An ideal format for a group afternoon whatever the weather. Difficulty ranges from beginner to experienced, some scenarios have a Creole theme, and the staff brief you in French.
A rainy day is the perfect excuse for a spa treatment. The 4 and 5-star hotels of Boucan Canot and L'Hermitage open their spas to outside guests: bourbon oil massages, facials, a hammam. Booking in the morning is recommended for an afternoon slot.

Creole Cooking Workshop
Several chefs and locals run 2 to 4-hour cooking workshops ending in a tasting: chicken or fish curry, rougail saucisse (sausages in a spicy tomato sauce), achards (pickled vegetables), chilli fritters. You leave with the recipes. A warm format that mixes learning with good company, ideal for a rainy day as a couple or group.
La Vanilleraie de la Roulof in Sainte-Suzanne or Domaine de la Vanille in Saint-André offer a guided tour with a tasting. The plant, hand pollination (bourbon vanilla is endemic to the Indian Ocean), drying and packaging. The shop sells fresh pods and vanilla products.
A cooking workshop, a vanilla farm, a rum distillery, an escape game, a lava tunnel: all guided activities you can enjoy under cover, ideal for a grey day.
A helicopter flight, sometimes the best rainy-day option
Under a low cloud layer, helicopter operators can often find a clear window above the clouds. Eruptions are sometimes more visible when the volcano's summit pokes above a sea of clouds. If a morning on the trails is off the table anyway, a flight is well worth trying.

A campervan to reach the dry coast in 30 minutes
When it's raining on the east side and the west coast stays clear, a campervan lets you switch climate zones in 30 to 45 minutes, with no hotel check-in to slow you down. Yescapa offers several models, with airport delivery.
Which season sees the most rain in Reunion Island?
The rainy season runs from November to April, peaking in January-February-March. Rainfall is heavy but often localised and short-lived: tropical showers lasting 30 minutes to 2 hours, mostly in the afternoon. The east coast (Saint-Benoît, Sainte-Rose) always gets more rain than the west (Saint-Gilles, La Saline).
What can you do in Saint-Gilles-les-Bains when it rains?
The Reunion Island Aquarium (€10 adult, 1.5 hours), a hotel spa (LUX Saint Gilles, Iloha, Mercure), the Villèle museum (€5 adult, in Saint-Gilles-les-Hauts), the marina's shops and restaurants, a Creole cooking workshop. Saint-Leu (Kelonia, Stella Matutina) is a good add-on, 15 minutes away.
What can you do in Saint-Pierre when it rains?
Saga du Rhum (a distillery museum, €10 adult, 1.5 hours), an escape game (from €22 per person, 1 hour), the shops on the main shopping street, the Saturday morning covered market, a Creole cooking workshop. Plaine des Cafres and Cité du Volcan are about 1 hr 15 min away if the skies clear at altitude.
What can you do in Cilaos when it rains?
When it rains, Cilaos is often shrouded in thick fog. A visit to the Chai de Cilaos (a high-altitude vineyard, with tastings), the Maison des Vins, the hot springs (Source de la Mare à Joseph), or an embroidery workshop (a long-standing craft in the cirque) are the indoor options. History buffs can also visit the local Père Yves Manglou museum.
How much does a museum day cost in Reunion Island?
Municipal museums (Villèle) are free under 26, €5 otherwise. The island's museums (Stella Matutina, Cité du Volcan, Kelonia, Saga du Rhum, the Aquarium) charge €8 to €10 per adult, €5 to €7 per child. Budget €30 to €40 per site for a family of 4.
Is there a museum pass in Reunion Island?
The Musées Régionaux (Stella Matutina, Cité du Volcan, Kelonia, Villèle) offer a €25 annual pass for one adult, giving unlimited access to all 4 sites for a year. A good deal if you're visiting at least 3 museums during your stay, or for locals. Available at the ticket desk of each site.
What can you do with kids when it rains in Reunion Island?
Kelonia (marine turtles, 1.5 hours), the Saint-Gilles Aquarium (fish and sharks, 1.5 hours), Stella Matutina (staging suited to age 7 and up, 2 hours), a vanilla workshop (hand pollination explained), bowling or the cinema in Saint-Pierre or Saint-Denis. Cité du Volcan remains a must from age 6 for the immersive room.
Can you hike when it rains in Reunion Island?
No, especially not in the mountains. Heavy rain triggers rockfalls, swells ravines, makes trails slippery, and fog can make it easy to lose your bearings. National Park trails are sometimes closed by order during heavy rain. Stick to indoor visits, or wait until the next day.
What should you do in Reunion Island during a cyclone?
In a red or cyclone alert, stay at your accommodation, don't go out, and follow Météo France Réunion and the prefecture. Roads and venues close, and the airport may suspend flights. Once the alert lifts, things resume gradually: allow 24 to 48 hours for venues to reopen depending on the damage.
How many rainy days does Reunion Island get on average?
On the west coast, around 60 rainy days a year, mostly between November and April. On the east coast, 180 to 250 days a year, the wettest part of the island. The highlands (Plaine des Cafres, Plaine des Palmistes, the cirques) see 200 to 300 days depending on the slope. See my guide on when to go.
How do you know if the rain will last?
The Météo France Réunion app gives reliable hourly forecasts up to 48 hours out, with 5-day models for planning. For mountain hikes, the National Park bulletin is more precise on trail conditions. For the volcano, the OVPF (the volcano observatory) publishes access conditions for the Enclos.
Are any outdoor activities still possible despite the rain?
A few exceptions: snorkelling in the protected lagoon is still possible if the sea isn't too rough. A seafront walk in La Saline or Saint-Pierre can handle a passing shower. Open-air markets are often covered. For everything else, it's better to switch to indoor plans.
