Arrival of the humpback whales

June officially marks the start of the humpback whale season (Megaptera novaeangliae). Coming from Antarctica, they migrate up to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean to give birth and nurse their calves. Success rate for trips from Saint-Gilles: 40-50% in early June, 70-80% by late June. Operators must follow the Quiétude whale-watching code of conduct.

In June, the southern-hemisphere winter settles in for goodin Reunion Island. Expect clear skies, steady trade winds, bone-dry trails and the first humpback whales offshore. The sea is cooler (24 °C) but still pleasant in the lagoon. The Hauts (the island's highlands) turn genuinely cool (8-12 °C at night): perfect for hiking, but pack a warm jacket and hat if you are camping.

June has one big advantage: until around 5 July, the French school holidays haven't started yet. Flight and hotel prices stay reasonable, the gîtes (mountain guesthouses) in Mafate are not yet packed, and the whales are starting to arrive. After 5 July, everything changes: peak tourist season, prices up 30-50%, gîtes fully booked.

Activities

Things to do in Reunion Island in June

June is the month for the big hikes. On land, the trails are at their very best: a guided Mafate crossing (2-5 days staying in gîtes), an ascent of Piton des Neiges, the Piton de la Fournaise at sunrise and Trou de Fer from Bélouve.

Out at sea, the first humpback whales are here: whale and dolphin watching from Saint-Gilles kicks off its season (a 40-50% success rate early in the month, 70-80% by late June). The catamaran cruise remains a must, with near-daily dolphins. The catamaran leaves from Saint-Gilles harbour, so unless you're staying in town, hire a car for the drive over.

For aerial views, June offers the clearest skies of the year: the helicopter and tandem paragliding in Saint-Leu are at their best. For an adrenaline rush, the Fleur Jaune canyon in Cilaos is in ideal condition too.

FAQ

All your questions about June in Reunion Island

What's the weather like in Reunion Island in June?
June is in the middle of the dry season (austral winter). West coast: 23 to 26°C in the day, 18-21°C at night, sea at 24°C. Rainfall: 50 to 80mm for the month, 4 to 7 rainy days, 7 to 8 hours of sunshine a day. Steady trade winds, growing in intensity. The Hauts (Cilaos, Plaine des Cafres) turn properly cool: 8-18°C at night, sometimes 4-5°C at Piton des Neiges at sunrise.
What activities can you do in Reunion Island in June?
June is the month for the big routes: Mafate over 3-5 days, an ascent of Piton des Neiges, cirque crossings, the volcano road, the Trou de Fer hike. The first humpback whales are around for whale-watching trips from Saint-Gilles. The Fleur Jaune canyon in Cilaos, paragliding in Saint-Leu, the helicopter (some of the clearest skies of the year). For the lagoon, swimming is possible but cool (24°C).
Can you see whales in Reunion Island in June?
Yes, June marks the arrival of the first humpback whales. Whale-watching trips from Saint-Gilles have a gradually rising success rate, from 40-50% early in the month to 70-80% by late June. Peak sighting season remains July-September, but June has the advantage of a fresher experience (fewer boats, more focused operators). See the full guide to whale watching in Reunion Island.
Is it a good idea to travel to Reunion Island in June?
Yes. June is one of the best windows of the year: prices are still reasonable (the peak starts around 5 July), the weather is superb, the trails are in perfect condition, the first whales arrive and crowds are low. Ideal for hikers and couples who want both sea and mountains without the school-holiday crowds. The only downside is the cool sea (24°C), which may put off keen swimmers.
Can you swim in Reunion Island in June?
Yes, the sea stays at 24°C in June. Swimming in the Ermitage, La Saline and Saint-Gilles lagoon is pleasant but cooler than in the hot season. Outside the lagoon, swimming is banned along almost the entire coastline due to shark risk. Supervised beaches: Boucan Canot, l'Ermitage, La Saline. The trade winds can generate some swell on the east coast.
What budget should you plan for Reunion Island in June?
June 2027 prices: before 5 July (outside school holidays), a return flight from Paris (the main long-haul gateway) at €700-950, a 3-star hotel at €90-130, a car at €35-50/day. From 5 July, when the French school holidays start, everything goes up. Activities stay at the same price year-round: €40-95 for a catamaran or canyon trip, €85 for a first dive, €205-345 for a helicopter flight, €60-90 for a whale-watching trip.
Can you climb Piton des Neiges in June?
Yes, June is one of the best windows. Dry trails, clear skies at sunrise (a 90% statistical success rate), no storms. A night at the Caverne Dufour gîte (2,478m) is cold (4-10°C), bring a warm jacket, hat, gloves and headlamp. Book the gîte 2-3 months ahead. Plan for 10-14 hours of effort over 2 days.
What can you do in Mafate in June?
June is the ideal period for Mafate: perfectly dry trails, gîtes fully operational, stable weather. Recommended routes: the Maïdo - La Nouvelle - Roche Plate - Marla crossing over 3-4 days, the Cap Noir - Roche Verre Bouteille - Ravine Mahot loop, or simply a there-and-back to La Nouvelle. Budget €25-40 a night for full board. Booking 2-3 months ahead is recommended.
