L'Étang-Salé and Saint-Louis: hotels and guesthouses in the hills above the black sand

L'Étang-Salé is all about its beach: a kilometre and a half of black sand lined with casuarinas and a lagoon inside the marine reserve, fifteen minutes from both Saint-Pierre and Saint-Leu. Behind it lies a forest planted to hold the dunes, then the road climbs into the hills and heads on to Saint-Louis, the gateway to the Cilaos cirque.

At L'Étang-Salé-les-Bains, swimming is only allowed in the lifeguarded zone protected by a net, in front of the lifeguard post. It opens only once the net has been checked each morning, with no guarantee in the southern summer, when the swell builds.

The independent guide to planning your trip to Reunion Island

We bring together more than 470 partner activities (helicopter, paragliding, hiking, diving, whale-watching cruises, airport transfers...), a wide catalogue of hotels and gîtes, and dozens of practical guides. An independent site run by someone passionate about Reunion Island.

L'Étang-Salé is split between Étang-Salé-les-Bains, a former fishing village turned resort, the centre at Le Lambert and highland hamlets backing onto the forest. Just to the east, Saint-Louis climbs from the coast to La Rivière and Les Makes, on the edge of the Cilaos cirque.

In town, the only seafront hotel, the Floralys, scores under 8/10 with Agoda guests, and the best-known guesthouses can't be booked through our partner. So we've added two places in Saint-Louis, fifteen to twenty minutes from the beach, to bring together five solid picks.

Where to stay

The hills rather than the seafront

From the beach, the road climbs quickly to Le Lambert and the hills, then heads east to Saint-Louis. Height buys you a wider view and a longer drive to the beach: seven to twenty minutes by car depending on where you stay.

Le Lambert, around the town hall

The town centre around the town hall, seven minutes from the beach by road.

Étang-Salé-les-Bains, on the seafront

The only hotel within walking distance of the beach, the 3-star Floralys, scores under 8/10 with Agoda guests. Kaz Vavang, a 4-star holiday villa 150 m from the lagoon, had no availability with our partner when we checked.

Practical tips

From the marine reserve to the Saint-Louis hills

A 40 km marine reserve

From Cap La Houssaye to the Roche aux Oiseaux at L'Étang-Salé, the marine nature reserve protects around 40 km of coast, 3,500 hectares and 20 km of coral reef. At L'Étang-Salé, the lagoon also shelters the little natural harbour of Bassin Pirogue.

Casuarina forest and the Gouffre

In the late 19th century, foresters planted thousands of casuarinas to hold the dunes: L'Étang-Salé forest still has its fitness trail and bird garden. On the coast, the Gouffre blasts the ocean up between basalt rocks.

Up to Les Makes

In the hills above Saint-Louis, Les Makes is known for its night skies and its astronomical observatory; higher still, the La Fenêtre viewpoint looks down into the Cilaos cirque. Allow about twenty minutes from Saint-Louis town hall to the observatory.

Golf, crocodiles and a coastal path

The town is home to the 18-hole Golf Club de Bourbon, founded in the 1960s, and the Croc Parc. On foot, by bike or on horseback, a coastal path runs to Saint-Pierre via the Gol pond. More ideas in our guide to things to do in L'Étang-Salé.

How this shortlist was put together
  • An Agoda guest score of at least 8 out of 10, based on real stays.
  • Enough reviews for the score to mean something ( usually 30 or more ).
  • Proper places to stay ( hotels, guesthouses, lodges ): private holiday-flat listings are left out.
  • Location checked on the map, in town or just outside it.
  • Scores and prices pulled automatically from Agoda's partner API and refreshed regularly.

The "Check prices" buttons lead to Agoda, a partner of this site: a booking may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. Hotels don't pay to be ranked.

FAQ

Staying in L'Étang-Salé and Saint-Louis: your questions

Is there a hotel on L'Étang-Salé beach?
Just one, the 48-room 3-star Floralys on avenue de l'Océan, but it scores under 8/10 with Agoda guests, so we haven't ranked it. Our closest pick to the beach is La Kaz Baz ' île, seven minutes' drive away.
Is Saint-Louis far from the beach?
Le Paille en Queue is fourteen minutes from L'Étang-Salé beach and Villa Blue Lodge twenty. On the other hand, Saint-Pierre and Pierrefonds airport are closer, and the Cilaos road starts in Saint-Louis.
Is the Papangue suitable for children?
Nothing is set up for them: the hotel aims mainly at couples, and the spa is over-18s only. With kids, Au ti bonheur d'en O' is a better fit.
Where to stay with kids who want a pool?
Au ti bonheur d'en O': a heated, fenced pool, a playground, a trampoline, plus a cot and high chair on request. For a big family, La Kaz Baz ' île has a private pool and sleeps ten.
How long is the drive from Roland-Garros?
About 1 h 10 without traffic, via the Route des Tamarins. Pierrefonds airport in Saint-Pierre is much closer: 22 minutes from L'Étang-Salé town hall and 17 from Saint-Louis.
Can I stay in Les Makes?
The village, up in the Saint-Louis hills, mostly has private rentals with no established set-up, so we left them out. It's an easy trip from our picks: the observatory is about twenty minutes from Saint-Louis town hall.
What about Villa Roméo?
This five-room guesthouse on chemin de Ligne holds the EU Ecolabel and serves home-cooked dinners, with views along the coast. We found no availability with our partner, so you book directly with the owners.
Where can I play golf?
Right in town, at the Golf Club de Bourbon, an 18-hole course founded in the 1960s at La Ravine Sèche, on the forest road. Don't mix it up with the Bassin Bleu golf course, which is at L'Éperon in the Saint-Paul district, much further north.
Can I explore Cilaos from here?
Yes, but the 400-bend road takes an hour to an hour and a quarter from Saint-Louis, a little more from L'Étang-Salé. Les Makes, closer by, gives you a first look into the cirque from La Fenêtre.
Is Saint-Leu better for the lagoon?
If the lagoon is your priority, yes: L'Étang-Salé is mainly about the big black-sand beach and the forest, while Saint-Leu has the lagoon, paragliding and the Kélonia turtles. They're fifteen minutes apart.
