Diagonale des Fous, the event of the month

In late October, the whole island lives to the rhythm of the Grand Raid: 165 km and 10,000 m of ascent, from south to north across all 3 cirques and the volcano. Over 2,500 runners, festive aid stations in the villages, a unique atmosphere across the whole island. Book hotels in Saint-Denis (the finish) and Saint-Pierre (the start) 3 months ahead for the relevant dates.

October in Reunion Island is a gentle changeover. The dry season ends on a high, and the southern summer starts to show itself. The sea warms back up to 25°C (nicer for swimming than in July-August), mountain trails are still perfect, and the last humpback whales can still be seen on trips from Saint-Gilles before they head back to Antarctica.

It's also a month full of events. The Diagonale des Fous(or Grand Raid) in late October creates a unique atmosphere across the island, with festive aid stations in every village along the route. The French All Saints' school holidays (Toussaint, late October depending on the zone) briefly push up crowds and prices. Outside them, October is an excellent balance of peace and quiet, weather and budget.

Accommodation

Where to stay in Reunion Island in October?

The Saint-Gilles seaside resort is handy for the last whale trips. L'Ermitage, La Saline, Saint-Leu for the lagoon. To watch the Diagonale des Fous, aim for Saint-Denis (the festive finish line) or a checkpoint such as Hell-Bourg (the 2026 route no longer goes through Cilaos). Following the runners from the start at Ravine-Blanche in Saint-Pierre to the finish at La Redoute stadium means a lot of driving: track down a rental car for race week.

Upmarket: upmarket hotels. On a budget: 10 cheap ways to stay.

Plan ahead: hotels in Saint-Denis and Saint-Pierre book up around the Grand Raid (book 3 months ahead). Outside the Raid and the French school holidays, October is very affordable.

FAQ

Reunion Island in October: your questions answered

What's the weather like in Reunion Island in October?
October is the switch from the southern winter to the southern summer. West coast: 25 to 28°C by day, 19-22°C at night, sea warming to 25°C. Still little rain: 30 to 60 mm for the month, 3 to 5 rainy days and 8 to 9 hours of sunshine a day. The trade winds ease off and the humidity slowly returns. The Hauts (the highlands) are pleasant in the morning (8-15°C at night), with clouds building in the afternoon.
What is there to do in Reunion Island in October?
October has a bit of everything. Mountain hikes are still perfect (Mafate, Piton des Neiges, the volcano), the last humpback whales are around early in the month (50-70% success rate), and conditions are ideal for helicopter flights, paragliding, the Fleur Jaune canyon in Cilaos and diving in Saint-Leu. The Diagonale des Fous (the Grand Raid, the island's legendary ultra-trail race) takes place in late October, with a unique atmosphere across the island.
Can I see whales in Reunion Island in October?
Yes, but it's the end of the season, as the humpback whales head back to their feeding grounds off Antarctica. Trips from Saint-Gilles have a 50-70% success rate early in the month and 30-50% by late October, so go in the first half of the month for the best chance. Dolphins (bottlenose and spinner) are around all year.
What is the Diagonale des Fous?
The Diagonale des Fous ("Madmen's Diagonal", also called the Grand Raid) is a legendary ultra-trail race held in Reunion Island every late October since 1989: 165 km and 10,000 m of ascent from the south (Saint-Pierre, Cap Méchant) to the north (Saint-Denis), across all 3 cirques and the volcano. Over 2,500 runners take part, with a unique atmosphere across the island and festive aid stations in the villages along the route. Several associated races: Trail de Bourbon, Mascareignes, Zembrocal Trail.
Is October a good time to visit Reunion Island?
Yes, an excellent time: glorious weather, the last whales, perfect hikes, and the Grand Raid for ultra-trail fans. Prices are reasonable early in the month, then rise for the French All Saints' school holidays (Toussaint, late October depending on the school zone). Moderate crowds. Ideal if you want the dry season without the July-August peak and don't absolutely need to see whales.
Can I swim in Reunion Island in October?
Yes, the sea warms back up to 25°C, nicer than in July-August, and conditions in the Ermitage, La Saline and Saint-Gilles lagoon are ideal. Outside the lagoon, swimming is banned along almost the whole coastline because of the shark risk. Supervised beaches: Boucan Canot (with a shark net), l'Ermitage and La Saline.
How much does a trip to Reunion Island cost in October?
October 2027 prices: a return Paris-Saint-Denis flight for €750-1,000 outside the French All Saints' holidays, €1,000-1,300 during them. A 3-star hotel for €100-140 a night outside the holidays, €130-180 during. A hire car for €40-55 a day. Activity prices stay the same all year. During the Diagonale des Fous (late October), accommodation near the checkpoints and the finish (Saint-Denis) costs 30-50% more.
Can I climb Piton des Neiges in October?
Yes, conditions are still excellent: dry trails, a clear summit at sunrise 90% of the time, and milder nights at the gîte (8-14°C, more comfortable than in July-August). The Caverne Dufour gîte (mountain hut) is usually easier to book than in peak season (1 month ahead is enough outside the French school holidays). Allow 10-14 hours of walking over 2 days.
Verdict

Is October a good time to visit Reunion Island?

Yes, an excellent time to go: glorious weather, a sea warming to 25°C, the last whales early in the month, mountain trails still perfect, and the unique atmosphere of the Grand Raid in late October. It's one of the best months of the year across the board.

Downside:the French All Saints' school holidays and the Grand Raid push hotel prices up late in the month. For the best value, aim for the first half of October.
