Gîte Chez Jimmy in Marla, the highest îlet (hamlet) in the Mafate cirque at 1,600 metres, is probably the best-known gîte (hikers' guesthouse) in the cirque. What makes it ‘an institution’ for hikers: the Snack Le Marla bar at the foot of the cliffs, terraces to recover on after the walk, hearty Creole cooking and, above all, evenings of séga and maloya, the island's traditional music. It's the stop everyone looks forward to at the end of a day's hiking.

Here's everything worth knowing before you book: the €55 half-board rate, how to get there from Cilaos over the Col du Taïbit or from Salazie over the Col des Bœufs, the types of accommodation (an 8-bed dorm, renovated bungalows, camping), meals and booking tips plus ideas for planning a crossing. If it's your first time in Mafate, the guided trek from Cayenne often includes a stop at Jimmy's.

The experience

A night at Jimmy's after the crossing

Arriving in Marla. Whichever way you come into the cirque (the Col du Taïbit from Cilaos, the Col des Bœufs from Salazie, or from La Nouvelle or Roche Plate on the inner trails), Marla is usually one of the last stops of the day, at the foot of the Bord-Martin ridge, 1,600 metres up. Jimmy's gîte is easy to spot: its ‘Snack Le Marla’ sign is the first thing you see as you walk into the hamlet.

The accommodation. There are three options: dorms sleeping up to 8 people (bedding provided), recently renovated bungalows with a panoramic terrace over the cirque, and a field next door to pitch your tent if you're carrying your own gear. The bathrooms have been fully refurbished with hot water, a rare luxury in Mafate.

Snack Le Marla. This is the heart of the place. At any time of day, you can order takeaway sandwiches, Creole plates and cold drinks. In the evening, a shared Creole dinner is served on the big wooden terrace: caris (Creole curries), rougails, rice, beans, sometimes homemade desserts. In the morning, a hearty breakfast on the terrace, facing the cliffs as they catch the sunrise.

Séga and maloya nights. This is what turns a simple night into a memory: Jimmy and his team often host local musicians playing séga and maloya, the island's traditional Creole music. The bar stays open late but is soundproofed from the dorms, so early sleepers can still get their rest. It's one of the few genuinely lively evenings you'll find in Mafate.

How to get there

How to reach Marla on foot

Marla can only be reached on foot. It's the highest hamlet in the cirque (1,600 m), and there are three main ways in:

Col du Taïbit (from Cilaos): about 3 to 4 hours of steady walking. The pass tops out at 2,081 m, with a steep climb from Bras Sec and then a descent into Marla. The most direct route from the south.

Col des Bœufs (from Salazie): about 3 hours, mostly downhill and traversing. The classic route to Marla, either via La Nouvelle or straight from the car park at the pass.

As a stage on a full Mafate crossing: Marla is one of the stops on the full circuit (La Nouvelle → Marla → Roche Plate, or the other way round); allow 4 to 6 hours depending on where you start.

There are no vehicles here: everything comes in on foot or by helicopter. Stock up and do your shopping in Cilaos or Salazie before you set off.
