La Chapelle Cilaos Hike: 2 guided options, 2026 prices

Two guided hikes to La Chapelle, a 100m rock monolith below Piton de Sucre in the Cilaos cirque, from €50 with Otenthike (Manawa) or €67 with Bureau Montagne Réunion (Viator, small groups of 12 max, 5/5 from 4 reviews).

5hwalk8km+550melevationFrom €50

La Chapelle de Cilaosisn't the village church (Notre-Dame-des-Neiges) but an exceptional geological curiosity: a canyon carved by the river through a monolith over 100 metres tall, shaped like a chapel. At the foot of Piton de Sucre, it's an exposed magma chamber revealed by erosion, unique on the island. It's part of the Cilaos cirque, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Here are 2 guided hikes from €50, bookable with my partners Manawa (Otenthike, the cheaper option) and Viator (Bureau Montagne Réunion, in a small group). Allow 5 hours for 8km and 550m of climbing, suitable from age 8 if reasonably fit. If you're looking for other Cilaos activities, see my Fleur Jaune Canyoning page.

This is the most affordable way to do the geological hike to La Chapelle from Cilaos: €50 per person with Otenthike, listed on Manawa with flexible cancellation. The meeting point is at 7am at the Cilaos tourist office (2 bis Rue Mac Auliffe, in the heart of the village), where your state-qualified guide gives a full briefing on the day's conditions (weather, the group's level, wildlife you might see).

The route covers 8km with 550m of climbing, uphill from the very start. The trail alternates between filao forest and clearings, with a magnificent view over the village of Îlet à Cordes and the canyon carved by the Bras Rouge river. The highlight of the hike: arriving at the foot of the monolith, over 100 metres tall, carved by erosion and shaped like a chapel (hence the name). It's an exposed magma chamber, dominated by Piton de Sucre, a genuine geological treasure of the cirque.

Who it's for: families with children from age 8 (make sure they're steady on rocky paths), couples and friends who want to explore Cilaos with a local without spending much, and anyone wanting a half-day outing (5h, leaving the afternoon free for the village). Who it's not for: anyone who wants a guaranteed small group (no cap is stated; the €67 Bureau Montagne option limits groups to 12), or anyone put off by a long climb (550m up and 550m down can be tough if you don't hike much).

Manawa price: €50 per person. Rated 5/5 from 1 Manawa review so far (the listing is recent). Included: a guide. Not included: water (bring at least 2L), a picnic, snacks, warm clothes, sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen (see Good to know below for the full checklist).

This is the premium package (€67 per person) with Bureau Montagne Réunion, listed by my partner Viator. What sets it apart: Thursday departures are guaranteed from the first booking (no minimum group size), groups are capped at 12 for a more personal experience, and you're led by a qualified mountain guide from Bureau Montagne Réunion, the island's best-known guiding organisation.

The route is the same as Otenthike's: 8km, 550m of climbing and 5h of walking from Cilaos. The difference is the guiding: Bureau Montagne Réunion focuses on the island's geological history, with detailed explanations on Cilaos's volcanic formation, La Chapelle's magma chamber, and the particularities of Piton de Sucre. Part of the hike follows the riverbed, on an unmarked route, to get as close as possible to the cliff face.

Who it's for: travellers who want a more upmarket guided hike in a smaller group, geology and volcano enthusiasts, and anyone with fixed dates (Thursdays are guaranteed, with no risk of cancellation for lack of numbers). Who it's not for: tight budgets (the €50 Otenthike option is cheaper) or anyone who can't do a Thursday (Otenthike runs daily, subject to availability).

Viator price: €67 per person. Rated 5/5 from 4 Viator reviews. Included: a mountain guide and snacks at breaks. Free cancellation up to 24h before departure (standard Viator policy). 8km with 550m of climbing, intermediate level (a steady climb over steps and large rocks, but nothing dangerous). Bring water, a picnic and your own gear.

Good to know

Preparing for your hike to La Chapelle

  • Hiking boots are a must (no trainers or flip-flops; the trail has steps and large rocks).
  • At least 2L of water per person to bring (no drinking water point along the route).
  • A picnic or snacks (not included with Otenthike; snacks included with Bureau Montagne).
  • A fleece and a waterproof jacket are essential (the weather changes fast at 1,200m, with fog and rain possible even in the dry season).
  • Language: briefings are in French; if you need an English-speaking guide, ask when you book.
  • Sunglasses, a hat, SPF 50 sunscreen (intense UV at altitude).
  • Walking poles help on the descent (550m of steady downhill, easier on the knees).
  • The dry season is best (May-November). In the wet season (December-April), the river can be in spate and the final unmarked section impassable.
  • Travel-sickness tablets are a good idea for the road up (421 bends, 1h30 from Saint-Denis or Saint-Pierre).
  • Driving up yourself: parking is free around the village. Compare car rental deals if you haven't arranged one yet.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about La Chapelle de Cilaos

What is La Chapelle de Cilaos?
It's a geological curiosity in the Cilaos cirque, below Piton de Sucre: a canyon carved by the river through a monolith over 100 metres tall, shaped like a chapel (hence the name). It's an exposed magma chamber revealed by erosion; its narrow, vertical structure is unique on the island. Don't confuse it with the village's Catholic church (Notre-Dame-des-Neiges), a separate site in the village centre.
What does a hike to La Chapelle cost in 2026?
Expect €50 per person with Otenthike (Manawa listing) for the most affordable package, or €67 with Bureau Montagne Réunion (Viator) for the small-group package with snacks included. Both packages last 5h, cover the same 8km with 550m of elevation gain, and start from the Cilaos tourist office. Going without a guide is free (the trail is partly waymarked), but not advisable for the unmarked riverbed section, which needs mountain experience.
Is the hike suitable for children?
Yes, from age 8 according to Otenthike. But bear in mind that 5 hours, 8km and 550m of climbing is hard work. The trail has natural steps and big rocks, so children need to be steady on their feet. With 6-7 year olds, start with shorter walks (the Bras Rouge waterfalls, trails around the village) before tackling La Chapelle.
Can you do La Chapelle without a guide?
Technically yes: the approach trail is waymarked and well used (Sentier Marquise, from the village centre). But the final stretch to the foot of the monolith follows the riverbed on an unmarked route, where local knowledge and mountain safety skills (river levels, slippery wet rocks, finding your way in fog) are essential. A guide is strongly recommended for this part, and the geology commentary is half the appeal.
When should you do the hike? (seasons and times)
Year-round, but the dry season (May to November) is best, avoiding cyclone rains and swollen rivers. The wet season (December to April) is less suitable, as the riverbed can become impassable. Ideally set off at 7am to reach La Chapelle around 10-11am (the best light on the monolith) and head back before the afternoon clouds that so often roll into the cirque. No night hiking.
What gear should you bring?
Essentials: hiking boots (no trainers or flip-flops), at least 2L of water, a picnic or snacks, SPF 50 sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a fleece and a waterproof jacket (the weather changes fast at 1,200m), plus walking poles for the descent. Otenthike provides the guide only; Bureau Montagne adds snacks. For more to do in Cilaos, see my Fleur Jaune canyoning and Cilaos quad biking pages.
How many bends to reach Cilaos?
The legendary RD242 road (Route de Cilaos) has 421 bends over 36km from Saint-Louis. It's often called the 'road of 400 bends'. Allow 1h30 from Saint-Denis and 1h from Saint-Pierre. Take travel-sickness tablets if you're prone to it, and drive carefully (narrow tunnels, blind bends): it's not one for nervous drivers. There's also a Car Jaune bus from Saint-Louis (line 5).
Should you book ahead?
Yes, it's strongly recommended for both. For Otenthike, book on Manawa 7 days ahead in high season, 2-3 days in low season. For Bureau Montagne, departure is guaranteed every Thursday from the first booking, but plan 7-14 days ahead to organise your week well (the hike takes up an entire Thursday morning). Both operators may cancel in bad weather (storms, thick fog), with a full refund. 2026 prices verified as of this page's update.
