The 8 trails

From easy to very demanding

Several of these trails begin at a car park: at the top of Roche Merveilleuse, at Mare à Joncs, and at Le Bloc for Piton des Neiges (also reachable by 4x4 taxi). The best outings start early: sunrise at the viewpoint, or a pre-7am departure for Les Trois Salazes. Those dawn starts are much easier with a vehicle of your own, and you can line up a hire car once your dates are fixed.

Frequently asked questions

Hiking in Cilaos, in practice

What's the most beautiful hike in Cilaos?
For the view: Roche Merveilleuse at sunrise (a 30-minute walk, 360° over the cirque). For adventure: the 2-day Piton des Neiges climb (≈1,700m elevation gain, sunrise at the summit). For volcanic scenery: Les Trois Salazes or the Col du Taïbit. For swimming: the Bras Rouge waterfall. The 'most beautiful' really depends on your level and how much time you have.
Which easy hike in Cilaos works with children?
Roche Merveilleuse (a 30-minute walk, suitable from age 4-5), the Mare à Joncs loop (1h30, 150m elevation gain), the interpretive trails around the village (Route Forestière, Sentier de la Maison Maillard). For children aged 8-10+ used to walking, the Bras Rouge waterfall works as a round trip (≈3 hours).
When's the best time to hike in Cilaos?
The dry season (May-November) is the ideal window: trails in good condition, the sea of clouds only rolling in by mid-afternoon, cool mornings (8-12°C) and mild days. The wet season (December-April) brings greener scenery but muddy trails and temporary closures after cyclones and heavy rain.
How do you climb Piton des Neiges from Cilaos?
Via the Sentier des Sentinelles from Le Bloc (reachable by 4x4 taxi or car to the car park). A climb of around 5 hours to the Caverne Dufour gîte (2,480m), an overnight stay, then setting off at 4am for a final 1h30 push to the 3,070m summit. An unforgettable sunrise. Booking the gîte 2-3 months ahead in the dry season is essential.
What should you pack for hiking in Cilaos?
Water (1.5L for short hikes, 2-3L for longer ones), energy snacks, hiking boots with ankle support, a cap or hat, sunscreen, a lightweight rain jacket (weather changes fast at altitude), a fleece for the morning. A head torch and sleeping bag if staying overnight at a gîte. The IGN 4406RT map 'Cirque de Mafate, Cirque de Cilaos' or the Visorando app.
Are the Cilaos trails currently open?
Check the ONF (National Forestry Office) website before setting off, which keeps an up-to-date list of closed trails (closures due to cyclones, works, or rockfall risk). After heavy rainfall, some ravine trails stay closed for several days. The Cilaos gendarmerie can also give local information.
Do you need a guide to hike in Cilaos?
Not for the waymarked National Park trails (Roche Merveilleuse, Mare à Joncs, Cap Noir, Bras Rouge), which can be done independently. For Piton des Neiges, a guide is useful the first time round for pacing the night climb and for safety. For canyoning (Bras Rouge, Fleur Jaune), a state-certified guide is mandatory. Several certified mountain guides (AEM) operate out of Cilaos.
Can you wild camp in Cilaos?
Wild camping is banned within the village perimeter. It's tolerated in certain more remote spots: up in Ravine Blanche, or near the Bélouve gîte (further afield), provided you respect the site (no fires, take your rubbish with you, pitch in the evening, take down at dawn). The Caverne Dufour gîte (2,480m) is the official option for Piton des Neiges.
