This is the only clear kayak tour you can book online in Reunion Island, and one of the most-reviewed activities on this site, with an average of 5 out of 5 from 90 verified Manawa reviews. It's run by Lagon Réunion, based right on Trou d'Eau beach in La Saline-les-Bains, on the part of the lagoon sheltered by the coral reef.

Allow 2 hours in total, including 1h30 on the water. The kayak's rigid hull is completely see-through, so you can watch coral heads, shoals of reef fish and sometimes green turtles right beneath you. The guide explains the lagoon's marine life and teaches you a few basic paddling strokes before you set off.

Who it suits: families with children aged 5 and over (the youngest minimum age of any activity on this site), couples looking for something peaceful rather than an adrenaline rush, and anyone who'd like to see the reef without getting in the water. It's the only activity on this site that lets you see the coral from the surface without a mask.

Manawa price €50 per person. Flexible cancellation, with free rebooking or a refund if the weather is bad. Included: the kayak, a paddle, a briefing, a guide, a cocktail afterwards and photos. Bring swimwear (for a dip if the sea is calm), a towel, 100% mineral sunscreen (compulsory in the marine reserve) and polarised sunglasses, which make a huge difference when looking through the hull.

The alternative to the clear kayak: an ordinary 2-seat sea kayak with a solid hull, hired on La Saline-les-Bains beach to paddle on your own (the same reef-sheltered lagoon, but with no guide and no view through the hull).

Its big advantage is the price: just €30, the cheapest way to kayak on the lagoon. You choose your pace, how long you go for (1 to 3 hours depending on the hire) and your route within the lagoon. You get a dry box for your belongings, an approved life jacket and a quick briefing before you set off.

Who it suits: couples or friends who are happy to paddle on their own, anyone after a fun, cheap beach activity, and children aged 5 and over as long as an adult does the paddling. Who it doesn't suit: anyone who wants to see the reef through a clear hull (the €50 guided clear kayak tour is the one for you).

Manawa price €30 per person for the self-guided kayak. Flexible cancellation. Bring swimwear, a towel, 100% mineral sunscreen, a cap and sunglasses. No experience needed: if you can swim and hold a paddle, you're good to go after the 5-minute briefing.

Several operators offer kayaking (clear or not) straight from the beach at Saint-Gilles, L'Hermitage and La Saline. They're not currently available through my Manawa partnership, so book on the spot or through the tourist offices.

Good to know

Know before you book

Why Trou d'Eau and not central Saint-Gilles?

Trou d'Eau beach sits in La Saline-les-Bains, on the sheltered lagoon that stretches from Saint-Gilles to L'Étang-Salé. It's one of the richest parts of the lagoon for fish (plenty of coral heads, shoals of surgeonfish and butterflyfish near the surface, stingrays on the sandy bottom) and the best sheltered from the afternoon breeze. Lagon Réunion is based right on the beach, so there's no transfer from Saint-Gilles or L'Hermitage.

Polarised sunglasses are essential

The clear hull reflects sunlight and washes out what's underneath if you're wearing ordinary sunglasses. Polarised sunglasses cut the glare on the surface and let you see 2-3 times better through the hull. Essential, not optional.

100% mineral sunscreen is compulsory

Chemical filters (oxybenzone, octinoxate) are banned in the marine reserve. Before you go, check that your sunscreen says "100% mineral" or "reef-safe", with zinc and titanium as the only filters. Lagon Réunion can refuse sunscreen that doesn't comply.

Season and light

The dry season (May to November) gives the clearest water; go in the morning, when the low sun lights up the seabed. In the rainy season (December to April), heavy rain can cloud the water with sediment. Tours still run, but it's less photogenic.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about the clear kayak

How much does a clear kayak tour cost in Reunion Island in 2026?
Expect €50 per person for the 2h guided tour on the Trou d'Eau lagoon with Lagon Réunion (5/5 from 90 Manawa reviews). The price includes the clear kayak, a paddle, an experienced guide, a cocktail afterwards and photos. If you'd rather paddle on your own, an ordinary 2-seat sea kayak costs €30 from La Saline-les-Bains.
Where can you go clear kayaking in Reunion Island?
The only clear kayak operator you can book online is Lagon Réunion, on Trou d'Eau beach in La Saline-les-Bains. The meeting point is right on the beach (details sent after booking). Other water sports centres in Saint-Gilles, L'Hermitage and La Saline hire out ordinary sea kayaks.
What's the minimum age?
5 years old with Lagon Réunion, with an adult. That's the youngest minimum age of any activity on this site, so it's one of the best options for families with young children. Kids share a kayak with an adult who does the paddling.
Do you need to be able to swim?
Yes, for both options (the clear kayak and the self-guided sea kayak), even though the lagoon is sheltered and shallow (1-2m at most where you paddle). An approved life jacket is provided either way. If you're very nervous in the water, choose the €50 guided tour, where a guide is with you the whole time.
Can you see fish and turtles through the kayak?
Yes, that's the whole point of the clear kayak. The Trou d'Eau and Saint-Gilles lagoon is home to shoals of reef fish (surgeonfish, butterflyfish, damselfish), sometimes stingrays on the sandy bottom and, more rarely, green turtles at the surface. The guide points out what's around and adapts the route to what they spot.
What happens in bad weather?
Manawa offers flexible cancellation, with free rebooking or a refund if the tour is called off because of the weather. Tours still run when it's cloudy (the reef shelters the lagoon from the wind), but after heavy rain, sediment in the water quickly cuts visibility through the hull.
What's the best time to go?
The morning slot (9-11am) gives the best visibility (low sun, little wind, fewer swimmers). The afternoon is fine, but the afternoon breeze can make the lagoon choppier and the fish are less active. Sunset isn't a good idea for the clear kayak: once the light fades, you can't see anything through the hull.
How far ahead should you book?
Outside peak season (May-June, September-November, excluding school holidays), 3 to 5 days ahead is enough. In high season (July-August, French school holidays, Christmas and New Year), book 1 to 2 weeks ahead. Morning slots are the most popular and go first.
What should you bring?
Swimwear, a towel, 100% mineral sunscreen (chemical filters are banned in the marine reserve), flip-flops or sandals for the walk to the kayak, polarised sunglasses (essential for seeing through the hull) and your own water. Leave jewellery behind and don't bring a phone that isn't waterproof, as things do fall in.
