This is the only guided climbing lesson bookable online in Reunion Island: €55 per person with L'envers du décor (Alazard Romain, a state-certified BE Escalade instructor). The format is a half-day of learning or progression in the Cilaos cirque, on beginner-friendly crags suited to the group's level (routes from 4a to 8a, beginner to expert). The meeting point is directly at the spot arranged with the instructor, or at the bakery in central Cilaos for groups arriving by taxi.

The terrain is outstanding: the Cilaos cirque is home to several beginner-friendly crags on basalt cliffs (black volcanic rock), with routes 10 to 30 metres tall depending on your comfort level. The instructor picks the spot based on your level and the weather (ideally in the shade, as the cirque is known for being dry and hot). You'll work on technique, belaying skills and route reading, in a friendly atmosphere suited to learning.

Who it suits: families with kids from age 6 for an introduction (kids particularly enjoy the short, technical routes), couples and friends after an original activity in Cilaos to complement hiking, amateur climbers who want to discover the local spots with a guide. Who it doesn't suit: very advanced climbers after pure independence on deep routes (try Cilaos Aventure instead, or contact Romain Alazard directly for an advanced course).

Manawa rate €55 per person. Rated 5/5 from 2 Manawa reviews, with positive feedback on the teaching ('The instructor was great', 'A great family climbing afternoon'). Included: full climbing gear (harness, helmet, rope, quickdraws, climbing shoes in your size). Bring comfortable clothing, sunglasses and sunscreen, plus a water bottle and cereal bars for breaks.

This is the expert format for climbing in Reunion Island: €285 for the group (not per person, so cheaper per head the more climbers you are), a full day on the multi-pitch routes of Piton de Sucre, the emblematic peak of the Cilaos cirque. The routes run 150 to 250 metres, which means several successive pitches (multi-pitch technique: leading, belaying, and setting up at anchors).

The route overlooks the Fleur Jaune canyon (where the Cilaos canyoning trip featured on this site takes place), with spectacular views of Piton des Neiges (the island's highest point at 3,070m). The grade sits around 4C to 5A (intermediate to advanced on the French scale), accessible to climbers already comfortable on single-pitch routes who want to move up to multi-pitch climbing with expert local guidance.

Who it suits: intermediate climbers (grade 4C minimum leading or seconding) who want to get into multi-pitch climbing, groups of 2-3 climber friends splitting the cost (€285 / 3 = €95 per person, comparable to the €55/person beginner lesson), enthusiasts after an immersive vertical experience on Piton de Sucre. Who it doesn't suit: complete beginners (book the half-day €55/person introductory lesson instead), children (age 16 minimum on the multi-pitch routes for safety reasons), a marked fear of heights (multi-pitch routes expose you to 100-200m drops).

Manawa rate €285 per group (up to 3 climbers maximum, confirm at booking). Rated 5/5 from 1 Manawa review, with positive feedback on how the routes were matched to the group's level ('A great choice of route, adapted to our level'). Flexible Manawa cancellation. Meeting point at 8am at the bakery on the town hall square in Cilaos for the briefing and the walk to the foot of the route.

Good to know

Getting ready for your climbing lesson

  • Comfortable clothing (trousers or shorts suited to climbing, a breathable t-shirt).
  • Closed shoes for the approach trail (no flip-flops; trainers or hiking shoes).
  • A 1.5L water bottle and cereal bars for energy breaks.
  • Sunglasses and SPF 50 sunscreen (UV is intense at 1,200m elevation, basalt cliffs heat up fast in the sun).
  • Your own climbing shoes if you have them (otherwise lent by the operator, in your size).
  • The harness, helmet, rope and quickdraws are provided by the instructor.
  • The dry season (May-November) is best; in the wet season, a wet cliff is too dangerous and the lesson is rescheduled.
  • No transfer from the coast: plan for a rental car or the public Car Jaune bus (line 5 from Saint-Louis). If you'd rather drive, look through available rental cars and allow at least an hour for the winding RN5 climb from Saint-Louis.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about climbing in Cilaos

What does a climbing lesson cost in Reunion Island in 2026?
Expect €55 per person with L'envers du décor (Alazard Romain) on Manawa for the half-day guided lesson. The price includes all gear, climbing shoes and drinks. Flexible cancellation. For advanced or multi-day courses, contact the operator directly (or Cilaos Aventure / Adventures Réunion) for a tailored quote. Prices are comparable to mainland French climbing schools, for the quality of instruction and the unique basalt setting.
Where can you climb in Reunion Island?
The Cilaos cirque is the island's historic climbing spot, with several beginner-friendly crags on basalt cliffs: Fleur Jaune (the main site, routes 4a to 8a, 10-30m tall), the Bras Rouge cliffs, and several spots in the cirque's highlands. The basalt rock offers excellent grip and varied technical routes. Outside Cilaos, a few spots exist in Salazie and at the volcano, but with no commercial guiding currently sold online.
Do you need experience for the lesson?
No, the lesson is accessible to complete beginners from age 6. The instructor adapts the difficulty (routes 4a to 8a) and technique to the group's level. For kids aged 6-10, bring an accompanying parent to help with motivation. For regular or experienced climbers, the instructor will pick more technical routes to help you progress. The session always aims to make climbers gradually more independent, with a focus on belaying technique and route reading.
What's the best season for climbing in Cilaos?
Year-round, but the dry season (May to November) is best for stable weather. The Cilaos cirque is known for its dry climate, which makes climbing easier (no wet rock). In the wet season (December to April), rain can make the rock slippery and the access trails difficult. The instructor always picks a shaded spot to avoid overheating (basalt cliffs heat up fast in the sun).
What gear should you bring?
Comfortable clothing (trousers or shorts suited to climbing, a breathable t-shirt), closed shoes for the approach trail (no flip-flops), a 1.5L water bottle, a snack and cereal bars for breaks, sunglasses and SPF 50 sunscreen (UV is intense at 1,200m elevation). Optional: your own climbing shoes if you have them (otherwise lent by the operator). The harness, helmet, rope and quickdraws are provided.
How long does a lesson last?
The standard listing is a half-day (~3-4 hours on site), including 30 minutes of kitting up and briefing, 2-3 hours of practice on the routes, and a 30-minute debrief. To go further, the operator offers tailored 2-3 day courses (contact them directly for a quote). The half-day is enough for a complete introduction and can easily be combined with other activities in Cilaos the same day (a visit to the village, a La Chapelle hike in the afternoon).
Do you need to get to Cilaos on your own?
Yes, the operator doesn't offer a transfer from the coast. Allow 1.5 hours of driving from Saint-Denis or Saint-Pierre via the D241 (the legendary road with 421 bends). A public Car Jaune bus is available from Saint-Louis (line 5, ~2 hours from Saint-Pierre). If you're staying in Cilaos village, the meeting point can be the bakery in the centre, 5-10 minutes on foot from most places to stay. A rental car is recommended for flexibility.
Do you need to book in advance?
Yes, strongly recommended. Capacity per session is limited to 6-8 climbers per instructor, and the operator fills up in high season (July-August, French school holidays). Book 7-14 days ahead in high season, 2-3 days in low season. 2026 prices verified at the time of the update. Flexible Manawa cancellation: a full refund if you cancel in time. In case of rain or unfavourable weather, the instructor reschedules the lesson (safety first, a wet cliff is too dangerous).

Last updated: 21 October 2026. Prices verified at the time of writing. Confirm the exact price when booking.
