Le Relax farm campsite, Salazie: a welcoming farm facing the cliffs of the cirque
A farm campsite with the Bienvenue à la Ferme (farm hospitality) label at Bras-Sec, above Hell-Bourg, facing the cliffs of the Salazie cirque: 25 shady pitches, hot showers, a shared kitchen, farm animals and a large covered pavilion for Creole evenings.
Le Relax lives up to its name: people come here to slow down, listen to the silence of the cirque and watch the cliffs change colour through the day. At Bras-Sec, 2km from Hell-Bourg, it's one of the best-known campsites in the Salazie cirque (a vast volcanic amphitheatre), and one of the few with the Bienvenue à la Ferme label: this is genuine Creole country life, not polished hotel hospitality.
Here's what you need to know before booking: rates, facilities, getting there from Hell-Bourg, capacity (tents and campervans) and services on the farm, plus things to do in the cirque (Piton d'Anchaing, Trois Cascades, the Bélouve plateau). For something even more memorable, head out with a local guide to Trou de Fer, one of the best outings in the area.
The campsite essentials
A night on the farm at the heart of Salazie
Arriving at the farm. From Chemin de Bras-Sec, the campsite opens onto a large, gently sloping lawn laid out over several shady terraces, with tents pitched on natural platforms facing the view. Several pitches are reserved for campervans and vans, with easy access from the road.
The farm spirit. The Bienvenue à la Ferme label means something here: you share the site with farm animals (hens, rabbits, sometimes young goats), children run around the play areas and sports pitches, and the large covered pavilion with its long tables hosts shared evenings. It's one of the only campsites on the island with this old-fashioned country feel.
The facilities. Hot showers, clean toilets and wheelchair-accessible facilities are rare in the area. A shared kitchen with a fridge and gas lets you cook under cover. There's a barbecue and a fire pit, and the owners provide the wood: a real treat after a day's walking in the cirque.
The view. The campsite faces Piton d'Anchaing (1,354m), Bord-Martin and the cliffs that enclose Salazie. At sunrise, the low light catches each peak in turn and the colours of the landscape change within minutes. The perfect time for a coffee on the lawn.
How to get to Le Relax
From Saint-André, take the D48 towards Salazie. Drive through the town of Salazie, then continue to Hell-Bourg. At Hell-Bourg, head towards Îlet à Vidot and follow Chemin de Bras-Sec for about 2 kilometres. You'll see the “Camping à la ferme Le Relax” sign from the road.
Allow about 40 minutes by car from Saint-André, 50 minutes from Saint-Denis, 1 hour 15 from Saint-Pierre. The road up to Salazie is winding but paved all the way and fine for any standard car. Fill up with fuel in Saint-André: there's no petrol station beyond Salazie.
Parking is directly at the campsite for cars and campervans. The farm is 2km from the centre of Hell-Bourg, where you'll find shops, restaurants and the famous Maison Folio (a heritage Creole house open to visitors).
